Chapter 1

Edna Garrett Gaines had been waiting for hours upon hours for her surprise. It was her birthday and her husband Bruce had told her that he was going to give her the world's best present, but it was a surprise so he wouldn't say exactly what the world's best present was.

Bruce Gaines had taken forever to set up this present for his beloved wife. She had gone five years without seeing her girls and today she would, he had gotten all of them to agree to a weeklong reunion. He had immediately gotten three of the girls and their families to agree the fourth worried him. Blair was coming, but it had been very difficult to get her there. Bruce had yet to even talk to her. He had spent two hours talking to her husband Don. Don Westland was not an easy man to talk to; Bruce wondered how Blair put up with having to live with him.

Tootie Ramsey Williams was getting her family ready to meet the once four most important women in her life. The last time she had seen them had been at Natalie's wedding to Snake Jennings, five years earlier. The same day that she met Blair's husband, Tootie couldn't stand him. He had spent the entire night making snide comments about the fact that it was Natalie's wedding day and she already had two children. Tootie knew that Blair adored Natalie's two children three year old Samantha and three week old Nathan, but she had said nothing to her husband. As a matter-of-fact, she had spent the whole night hanging on every single word that came out of Don's mouth. It worried Tootie that Blair didn't light up the room anymore, but she attributed it to the fact that Blair had just found out that she was pregnant, and didn't feel well. Oh well, she had to get seven year old Jessica and six year old Dennis ready to meet their Grandma Garrett, Aunt Natalie, Aunt Jo, and hopefully Aunt Blair. Unfortunately, during the wedding they were staying with their Grandma Williams due to a nasty bout of chickenpox.

Natalie Jennings was starting to get very, very impatient. She was ready to get going she wanted to see her family already. Natalie wanted to see Bruce and Mrs. Garrett-they all knew that it was Gaines but couldn't stop the habit; Jeff, Tootie, Jessica, and Dennis; Rick, Jo, Rikki, and Joey; and of course Blair, Kalle, and Jayden. The only person that she didn't want to see was Don, but seeing as Blair didn't go anywhere without him, she decided that she should just be grateful that Don was going to let her come and bring the children. Natalie didn't even know what Blair's children looked like, Don wouldn't let her, or any other member of Blair's Eastland family near them. Natalie didn't push it, she knew better. She knew that Blair had sent everybody, pictures of Kalle right after her birth, she also remembered the next days headline:
MANHATTAN SOCIALITE HEIRESS IS HOSPITAL
AFTER UNFORTUNATE ACCIDENT OCCURS IN HOME.
She never said it out loud, but Natalie always suspected that the “accident” had a name Donald Oliver Westland. Blair had in a lot of ways been Natalie's big sister, then Don should up and Blair isolated herself from everyone it was disconcerting. The only had three things left of Blair: memories, a picture of a newborn Kalle, and a picture of a newborn Jayden. Natalie also knew that Blair was pregnant again, she only hoped that Don would allow them to be there for Blair with this baby. The one thing that made Natalie proud, was that as much control as Don had, Blair had still managed to send them another picture this time of her son Jayden as a newborn.

Jo Polniaczeck-Bonner couldn't believe what he was hearing; Blair Warner was actually going to show up. Jo knew that Blair went by Blair Westland now, but she also knew that Don was a creep so unless it was absolutely necessary Jo was going to call her by Warner. She still couldn't believe what Blair had gone and married, okay she was going to stop thinking about Don and focus on the fact that she was going to get to see her best friend again. Now all she had to do was survive the car ride with her nine-year-old daughter Erica, and eight-year-old son Joseph. Luckily, her third child aka her husband Rick was sick and had taken some Nyquil. Rick had thought Dayquil was better, but she had reminded him that he had been up all night coughing, and Nyquil always knocked him out so this way he could catch up on that night of lost sleep. Plus, Rick was by nature a hyper person so he couldn't stand being cooped up in the car, this way he didn't have to put up with the small space and she didn't have to put up with him climbing the walls. Now all she had to do was conduct the inspection and confiscate all fake vomit, whoopee cushions, and other contraband that Rick and Joey may have decided to try and bring, and they'd be off.

Blair Westland couldn't wait; Don was going to allow her to go home. She would finally be able to show off her two treasures her four year old daughter Kalle and her two year old son Jayden. Blair was even happier because she was due any day now so they may even get to meet Olivia. Now all she had two do was finish getting ready. She quickly put on her turtleneck and took out her concealer so that she could start covering up the bruise on her face; the turtleneck would cover up the rest. She still couldn't believe what had happened. She had gone to the doctor for her sonogram, the doctor had told her congratulations you're having a girl, she had come home, told Don, and gotten beaten up for the baby not being a boy. Oh well, at least she would be able to see her family and they would meet Kalle, Jayden, and possibly Olivia. She was just glad that she had finally earned Don's forgiveness, for this meant that they wouldn't meet her charming, kind, and loving husband. She knew that she got hit because he loved her and just wanted to protect her, but she also knew that the rest wouldn't understand that she always deserved everything that he did to her.

Chapter 2

Edna was starting to get anxious she wanted to know what was going on immediately. Bruce had started making phone calls about two hours before, four phone calls to be exact. Edna’s curiosity had been going wild ever since. The fourth call had especially piqued her interest; Bruce had risen his voice more than once at whom ever was on the other line, although he quickly quieted it to avoid her hearing him.

Bruce was livid. He had noticed that Edna was getting antsy about two hours earlier, so he had started calling the girls to check arrival times. Everything was going perfectly until, he called Don who started to suggest that Blair may not be there; Bruce could hear Blair begging in the background, after half an hour Don relented and said that they would be there by eight o’clock. The man was quite simply the most infuriating human being on the face of this Earth. Suddenly, Bruce realized that it was already 6:45, and the girls would be arriving any minute now.

At 6:55 PM, Tootie Ramsey Williams saw the most beautiful thing that she had ever seen. She just couldn’t help but cry as they drove up, to the house where she had grown up, to the house where her second mother lived. Jeff didn’t realize just how home sick she had been, until she ran out of the car full speed ahead before he had even had a chance to fully stop the car. Both Jessica and Dennis, looked up at their father at the exact same time astonished, never in their lives had they seen their normally very grown up mom be as happy as they got on Christmas. Whatever was inside that house must be the world’s most fantastic gift.

At seven o’clock on the dot, Edna heard the doorbell ring. She looked back at Bruce.

Edna: Bruce, who could that, is?

He simply smiled.

Bruce: Edna, darling open the door. A part of your present has just arrived.

Edna opened the door and looked, there looking back at her with tears in her eyes was Tootie, and standing behind her were Jeff with Jessica and Dennis. Edna felt glued in place, and when she woke from the daze she took Tootie into a hug and stayed there for a moment. Finally, a fully functional Tootie came in and so did her family.

Edna: Tootie, I can’t believe that you’re actually here.
Tootie: Well, Mrs. Garrett I had to be here for your birthday. We’ve let ourselves get to separate by distance; it’s time that stopped. I want my kids to know the woman that I consider a mother and therefore their grandmother.

Edna: Speaking of kids, isn’t time that I got introduced.

Tootie: Of course, what was I thinking? This is my daughter Jessica Anne Williams; she’s seven years old and quite the little actress.

Edna: Hi Jessica, do you know that you look just like your mommy?

Jessica: Yes m’am, I do.

Tootie: This young man here is my son Dennis Jefferson Williams; he’s six years old and he loves to roller skate.

Edna: So Dennis, do you have your own roller-skates?

Dennis: Yes m’am, but they’re baby skates. My mom says that I’m too young, for anything other than my Fisher Price Skates. They’re no fun, you can’t really do anything with them, and I want real skates.

Edna: Tootie you know, I remember your mother telling me that she got you your first pair of real skates on your sixth birthday. Dennis is already six so don’t you think that he might be old enough for real roller-skates. I just thought that I’d mention it.

Dennis: Yeah, mom. When can I get my skates?

Tootie: Thanks, Mrs. Garrett.

Edna: Hey, I’m just being a grandmother.

Chapter 3

Edna and Tootie couldn’t get over how great it was to be back together. Tootie had also given up all hope that her children would grow up unspoiled; Grandma Garrett was going to make sure that those two children had everything that their little hearts could possibly desire.

Natalie arrived at 7:05, but waited ten minutes before ringing the doorbell; she had to make sure that her family was presentable before Mrs. Garrett saw them. It was important to Natalie that this woman who had been basically her mother for nine years get the best possible impression of her children.

At 7:15, Edna heard the doorbell ring. She looked at Tootie. Edna knew full well that Tootie knew what was going on, but Tootie just smiled and feigned innocence. So, Edna opened the door, and there was Natalie with her family. Edna took all four of them into her arms, then she saw Natalie look behind her. Edna cried as she saw Natalie and Tootie finally reunited. She looked to Bruce, and he simply told her that Natalie was part two of her present. Edna thought that she knew, what the rest was, but she dared not hope. She simply ushered everyone in to sit and share.

Edna: Natalie, I want updates. I want them now; I haven’t seen your kids in five years so spill it.

Tootie: Yeah, Natalie. It’s time to spill it.

Natalie: You too, I haven’t even met your kids, but to show just how gracious I am, I’ll go first. Okay, you guys remember Samantha Natalie Jennings. She is now eight years old and absolutely adores horseback riding.

Edna: Hello, Samantha.

Samantha: Hi, Grandma. It’s me, where’s my hug and my kiss and my cookie.

Edna: Oh, honey. Come here right now for your hug and kiss, and then march yourself into the kitchen for a cookie. I didn’t think that you remembered me.

Samantha and Edna hug.

Samantha: Of course, I remember you Grandma. I just wanted to give Mommy her turn for hugs and kisses first.

Edna: Oh, I’ve missed you. Now go eat.

Samantha goes into the kitchen, but first stops and gives her Aunt Tootie a hug and a kiss.

Tootie: Natalie, she is just the sweetest thing. Now, this young man cannot be baby Nathan.

Natalie: Yes, it can and it is. This is my baby Nathaniel Samuel Jennings.

Nathan: Mommy, am I in trouble?

Natalie: No, why sweetheart?

Nathan: Mommy, you only say Nathaniel Samuel Jennings when you’re mad at me, I’m Nathan when you’re happy.

Natalie: Nathan, baby, I was just formally introducing you. Now, why don’t you go give Grandma Garrett and Aunt Tootie a hug and a kiss, and then you can go have a cookie with Samantha.

Nathan goes and hugs and kisses Edna and Tootie, so that he can join his sister.

Snake: Honey, Bruce, Jeff, and I have been just sitting here; would you mind if we went outside to talk while you ladies catch up?

Natalie: No problem here.

Tootie: Or here.

Edna: Or here either.

The men leave.

Tootie: Okay, Nat. Tell us about Nathan.

Natalie: Well, he just turned five, and he absolutely adores soccer, and can’t stand being called Nathaniel as you can see. Now, Tootie your turn introduce me to the two that are hiding, behind you and Mrs. Garrett.

Tootie: Okay, kids. Front and Center.

Jessica and Dennis reluctantly come out of hiding.

Tootie: Natalie, this is Jessica Anne, she’s seven; and this is Dennis Jefferson, he’s six.

Natalie: Hi, guys.

Tootie: Jessica, Dennis this is your Aunt Natalie.

Jessica and Dennis: Hi, Aunt Natalie.

Natalie pulls them both into a hug, and says now can I see smiles; by the time that she’s done with them they can’t stop laughing and feel completely comfortable with her. They can’t get over the fact that they have an Uncle Snake, and two cousins close to their age.

Natalie: Okay, you two time to meet my two. Samantha, Nathan come in here please.

Samantha and Nathan come in from the kitchen.

Natalie: Samantha, Nathan these are your cousins Jessica who’s seven, and Dennis who’s six. Jessica, Dennis these are your cousins Samantha who’s eight, and Nathan who’s five.

All of the kids said hi, and instantly hit it off. They all went upstairs to play with their toys.

Chapter 4

Jo Polniaczeck-Bonner was starting to think that the drive was never going to end. She adored her kids, and knew that the drive had only been two hours; but even half an hour in the car with them was an eternity. Joey wouldn’t stop bugging Rikki, who was trying very hard to write in the journal. At the exact moment that Jo thought she’d lose it, she saw the promised land Mrs. Garrett’s house, a place with a big yard where everybody could do their own thing without crowding anybody else.

Jo: Okay, kids. We’re at grandma’s.

At 7:30, Edna once again heard the doorbell. Natalie and Tootie both saw how eager she was to open the door, and it warmed their hearts. Edna definitely was not expecting what happened when she opened the door. She opened the door and the next thing she knew, she had two children in her arms yelling, “Grandma, Grandma!” She had instantly recognized them as Rikki and Joey, Jo and Rick’s kids so she just held them. Edna suddenly looked up, and there leaning against the doorframe was Jo.

Jo had never seen anything more beautiful than her children in the arms of the woman that she considered her surrogate mother.

*********************************************

The moment that passed between Mrs. Garrett and Jo left both Natalie and Tootie speechless. At first neither Mrs. Garrett nor Jo moved, and then in a perfectly synchronized movement they walked into each other’s arms and just held in an embrace.

Edna: Come and sit down Jo.

Natalie and Tootie hug Jo.

Jo: Hi, guys.

Natalie and Tootie: Hey, Jo.

Edna: Jo, we’ve established a routine; it’s called update Mrs. Garrett on her grandchildren.

Jo: Will do. Guys come here. Well, Mrs. Garrett this here as you know is Erica Rose Polniaczeck-Bonner. She is now nine years old and loves to write, and I mean that this kid can spend hours in a corner writing in her journal.
Rikki: Grandma, I spent the whole drive writing on my story. Do you want to read it when I’m finished?

Edna: Of course, I do sweetie.

Natalie: Hi, Rikki.

Rikki: Hi, Aunt Nat. Is Samantha here?

Tootie: Rikki, Samantha is upstairs with Nathan, and my two. Why don’t you go up there Samantha can introduce you to Jessica and Dennis.

Rikki hugs Tootie and goes upstairs.

Joey: Wait for me!

Jo: Freeze. Come back here, you can go upstairs in a second.

Joey comes back.

Jo: This here is Joseph Charles Polniaczeck-Bonner. He is eight years old and loves to play baseball. He recently pitched a no hitter; he’s great at it.

Joey: Hi, everybody.

Natalie and Tootie: Hi, Joey.

Joey: Okay, Mom. Now can I go upstairs with the rest?

Jo: Yes, sir you may.

Edna: Jo, they’ve gotten so big.

Jo: I know, I can’t believe it myself. The only thing I know is that they can be quite a handful.

Natalie: Jo, where’s Rick?

Jo: He’s outside, I saw the other men out there and decided that, that was probably the perfect place to leave him. This way we can catch up all of the children under eighteen are upstairs, and all of the ones over eighteen are outside.

Tootie: I’m just so glad that Bruce got us all together.

This statement quiets the room, everyone gets very pensive. Jo starts to say something very softly.

Jo: We aren’t all together.

Edna: I wish Blair were here.

Natalie: I miss her.

Tootie: So do I.

Chapter 5

Bruce was starting to get worried it was already 7:45, Blair should be arriving soon; but she was no where in sight. If Don ruined this night for Edna, Bruce was going to teach Don what pain was.

Blair was leaning against the window crying, Don had hit her again. He was furious because she had forgotten to pack his cigarettes.

Don: Blair, I’m going to stop at this gas station to buy some cigarettes. It’s in your best interest to clean up.

Blair: Yes, dear.

Don: Now, that’s my girl. You just remember to behave yourself when we get to Edna’s house.

Don goes and gets his cigarettes, while Blair reapplies her make up and dries her tears. They get into the car, and Blair wakes up the kids who were asleep in the back seat. She wants to make sure that they looked absolutely angelic when Mrs. Garrett, Tootie, Natalie, and Jo saw them.

Jayden: Mommy.

Blair: Yes, baby.

Jayden: Are we there yet?

Blair: Not yet, but soon.

Kalle: How soon, Mommy?

Don: We’ll be there in fifteen minutes, princess. Now you two, I want you to let Mommy rest. She hasn’t seen your grandma or aunts in a long time, and her and the baby need to rest before she does.

Kalle and Jayden: Okay, Daddy.

Blair knew fifteen minutes later, that it would be hard to keep her secret. The exact moment was when she saw her home for the first time in five years, and the cars parked outside, and knew that her family was inside. She could never lie to them, but she had to lie, for her own good, she had to lie.

Bruce saw the car pull up and Blair inside of it, he thanked God that for once Don had been a decent human being.

*********************************************

At eight o’clock, Edna heard the doorbell ring once again. She hoped that it was who she thought it was, she knew that the girls did too, she could see it in their faces especially in Jo’s. She opened the door, it was the only way that she’d ever know. The second that she saw her the tears started to flow. Edna’s heart broke at seeing the broken spirit that Blair had hidden in her eyes.

Blair had thought that she could contain herself, but when she saw Mrs. Garrett she knew that it was impossible. Blair flew into Mrs. Garrett’s arms sobbing, she knew that she’d pay later when Don and her were alone, but right now she didn’t care. Blair’s day consisted in kissing boo-boos, and generally making life better for Don, Kalle, and Jayden, now it was her turn to have everything made better by her “Mommy” and she wasn’t giving that chance up.

Edna just held the trembling young woman in her arms and whispered to her.

Edna: It’s going to be okay, sweetie. I’m here now, and everything is going to be okay. I promise.

Edna wanted to kill the person that had done this to her sweet, strong Blair.

*********************************************

Jo, Natalie and Tootie watched the scene with tears in their eyes. They all knew that Blair didn’t have it easy, but they were starting to see that they had no idea just how bad things were for her.

Tootie had been angry at Blair for pulling away, but now she was starting to see that Blair had not voluntarily separated herself from the group.

*********************************************

Natalie had always suspected that things had gone horribly wrong for Blair and that Donald Oliver Westland was the name of all of her problems. She no longer suspected now she knew that he was the scum responsible for the change that had taken place in Blair.

*********************************************

Jo was the only one looking at Mrs. Garrett, she was seething. It looked like she was ready to teach Blair’s tormentor what true torment was. Jo was also the only one to see that Mrs. Garrett wasn’t seething alone, Don’s face was red with fury. Jo bit her tongue until she saw Don move toward Mrs. Garrett and Blair, then she stood up.

Jo: Don, I think it would be best if you went outside with the other men.

Don responded through gritted teeth.

Don: My wife is obviously upset, I think that I should stay and comfort her.

Jo: I think you should go outside. Now!

Jo hit her fist into her palm, to show Don that he should do as he was told. Don picked up the kids and started toward the door.

Jo: Leave the kids here, Don.

Don: I’m their father.

Jo: Put them down.

Don went outside to let his anger fester. Blair was going to pay for this humiliation, she was going to pay dearly; pregnant or not.

*********************************************

The second that Jo got rid of Don, and kept him from taking the kids Edna felt Blair relax in her arms. Edna then heard a little voice.

Kalle: Mommy, don’t cry.

Blair let go of Edna and picked up Kalle.

Blair: Okay, princess.

Kalle: You promise.

Blair: I promise.

Jayden: Mommy, it’s okay I’m a big boy, I’ll protect you if Daddy gets mad.

Blair’s heart broke at hearing the oath of her two year old son, to protect her. She knew that she had to get out for them, but Don was her life. Don loved her, the beatings were his way of showing it; and she loved him. She took his little chin in her hand.

Blair: I love you, baby.

Jayden: I love you, too.

Edna: Blair come and sit down your back must be killing you. I know that mine did, in the last stages of both of my pregnancies.

Blair: Thank-you, Mrs. Garrett.

Blair sat down and within seconds Kalle and Jayden had made themselves comfortable on her lap.

Edna: Blair, these two obviously adore you.

Blair: I’m very lucky, them and their soon to be born little sister are the most important people in my life.

Jo: So introduce us to them.

Blair: Mrs. Garrett, Tootie, Natalie and Joanna Marie, this is Kalle Marie Westland my little princess. She turned four month and started ballet, she loves it. Most parents can’t get their kids to practice, I can’t get her to stop. Kalle, this is your Grandma Garrett, Aunt Tootie, Aunt Natalie, and Aunt Jo. Can you say hi?

Kalle buries her head into Blair’s chest.

Kalle: Hi.

Jo comes over and squats down by Kalle.

Jo: Hi, Kalle. I’m your Aunt Jo. Did you know that you have cousins?

Kalle: Yes, m’am. My mommy told me that I had cousins.

Jo: Would you like to meet them?

Kalle: Yes, m’am.

Jo goes to the foot of the stairs.

Jo: Rikki.

Rikki comes down the stairs.

Rikki: Yes, m’am.

Jo: Could you and the rest of the kids come downstairs, Aunt Blair and your little cousins are down here.

Rikki: Aunt Blair is here! We’ll be right down.

Rikki, Joey, and Samantha come running down stairs and hug Blair. Jessica, Dennis, and Nathan just watch.

Jo: You three, come here.

All three come and sit on their moms laps.

Jo: Blair, you remember Rikki and Joey.

Blair: Of course, I do.

Natalie: And of course you remember Samantha, and this here is Nathan.

Blair: Nat, I can’t believe how big they are.

Tootie: And these are my two, Jessica Anne and Dennis Jefferson.

Blair: Tootie, they’re beautiful.

Jayden: Mommy, what about me?

Blair laughs.

Blair: Tootie, Natalie, Jo and Edna Ann this is my two year old son Jayden Andrew Westland. He has my love of painting, and is quite good with his finger paints, if I do say so myself. Jayden, this is your Grandma Garrett, Aunt Tootie, Aunt Natalie, and ...

Kalle: Aunt Jo

Kalle gets off of Blair’s lap, and goes to sit in Jo’s arms.

Jo: So, you do like me?

Kalle just hugs Jo, everyone knows that a special bond has just been formed. Jayden follows suit by jumping into Edna’s lap.

Jayden: Hi, Grandma.

Edna: Hi, baby.

Jo: And what about the one in the oven?

Blair: Well, Jo the one in the oven as you so eloquently put it is a little girl. She’s due any day now, her name is going to be Olivia Michelle Westland.

Edna: I hope that she comes in time for us to meet her.

Natalie: So do I.

Blair: I really hope so, I would feel so much better having her here in Peekskill, and recovering here at home.

Tootie: You know what it’s going to happen, I just know it.

Blair looks like she wants to cry again, but she stops herself. The others are worried. Blair realizes this and speaks up.

Blair: Okay, lets finish introductions. Kalle, Jayden these are your Aunt Tootie and Uncle Jeff’s kids, Jessica Anne and Dennis Jefferson Ramsey Williams.

Jessica and Dennis: Hi, Kalle. Hi, Jayden.

Blair: And these are your Aunt Natalie and Uncle Snake’s kids, Samantha Natalie and Nathaniel Samuel Jennings.

Samantha: Hi.

Nathan: Hi, you can call me Nathan.

Kalle gets a good look at Nathan.

Kalle: Hello, Nathaniel.

Blair: And last, but not least these are your Aunt Jo and Uncle Rick’s kids, Erica Rose...

Rikki: Rikki.

Blair: and Joseph Charles Polniaczeck-Bonner.

Joey: Joey.

Rikki decides that the adults look like they want to talk, without the kids.

Rikki: Hey, guys let’s go back upstairs. Kalle, Jayden do you want to come too.

Jayden: Yeah.

He gets off of Edna’s lap and takes Rikki’s hand.

Kalle: I want to stay with my Mommy.

Nathan: Come on, Kalle.

Nathan holds his hand out to her.

Kalle: I’d love to Nathaniel. We can play tea party with my new tea set, it’s in my back pack.

Kalle goes and gets her back pack.

Nathan: Let me get that for you.

Kalle: Thank-you.

They go upstairs hand in hand.

Rikki looks at her mother and laughs.

Jo: Rikki, you and the others better get up there, before those to elope.

Rikki and the other kids go upstairs.

Tootie: That’s so cute, they like each other.

Blair: Excuse me, but my baby’s only four years old.

Jo: I’m more worried about him.

Edna: I just hope that they wait many, many years to make you two in-laws.

Natalie: Let’s get of this subject of Nathan and Kalle years down the road...

Jo: Do you mean Nathaniel?

Tootie laughs.

Natalie: and on to the real subject.

Jo and Tootie quiet down.

Edna: Blair, what’s going on with you?

Blair: Mrs. Garrett, there are a lot of things that you wouldn’t understand.

Edna: Try me.

Blair: Well...

Chapter 6

Edna: Well?

Blair: Look, Mrs. Garrett we’re married we have good times and bad times. Okay.

Jo: No, it isn’t.

Natalie: Just how bad is bad?

Blair starts to whisper.

Blair: Really bad, but I can’t tell you what’s wrong, I just can’t. Please don’t make me.

Tootie: Whatever’s wrong Blair you can tell us.

Blair voice starts to crack.

Blair: Everything’s fine, it's no big deal. You all know how I exagerate.

Natalie: Blair, don’t lie. If everything was fine and it were no big dea, you wouldn’t have flown into Mrs. Garrett’s arms sobbing uncontrollably.

Edna: Don’t think that we missed Jayden’s remark, either. Why does he have to protect you if Daddy gets mad? What exactly happens when Daddy gets mad?

Blair closes her eyes and looks just about ready to confess when Bruce walked in.

Edna saw Blair jump when the door opened. She was getting angrier by the moment, she knew that Blair jumped out of fear that it might be Don and that he might here what she said.

Bruce was sorry when he entered the house. It was obvious that something important had been about to happen, when he showed up. He hoped that the last part of his gift made up for the interruption.

Bruce: Edna, now that you’ve had a little time with your girls; I’m going to give you another part of your gift. Guys come back in, you need to hear this too; it involves you and is impossible without your cooperation.

Rick: What is it, Bruce?

Bruce: Edna, do you remember when I told you that my friend Earl was going out of town for two weeks?

Edna: Yes.

Bruce: Well, before he left I asked him to lend me his apartment for this week. He agreed. If the guys are willing. The five of us will stay over there; you five can stay here with the kids and stay up all night talking if you want. So, what do you say guys.

Jeff and Snake: Sure.

Don: I don’t know, Blair seemed upset earlier. I don’t want to leave her alone here.

Rick: The girls will take care of her don’t worry.

Blair goes and raps her arms around Don, knowing that he wants to tell her something privately.

Blair: Honey, I’m sorry if I worried you. I was just a little overwhelmed. Don, you know how emotional I get when I’m pregnant, and then to see Mrs. Garrett and the others for the first time in a long time, it just kicked my hormones into high gear.

Don: If you’re sure, I don’t want you to over due it.

Edna: Donald we won’t allow anything to happen to Blair.

Jo: That’s right.

Don: Okay.

He holds Blair close and whispers in her ear.

Don: Blair, you’re already in trouble. Don’t make it harder on yourself, and behave. May be, just may be if you keep your mouth shut I’ll go easier on you.

Don lets go, and speaks out loud.

Don: I love you, sweetheart. I’ll see you tomorrow.

While Don was putting on his act, the other men were saying good-bye to their wives.

Bruce: Come on Don, let’s go.

All five men leave, and Blair sighs a sigh of relief.

Edna: Okay, sleeping arrangements. The boys can sleep in my room, the girls can sleep in Tootie and Natalie’s old room, and we can stay up all night in Blair and Jo’s old room.

Blair: It’s a deal, let me just get the kids down for the count.

Once all of the kids were in bed, and the junk food was out. The girls sat down to talk.

Jo: Come on, Blair take off your make-up and put on your pajamas, everyone else has.

Blair hesitates, causing everyone to become suspicious.

Blair immediately notices the other’s suspicions, and knows deep down inside that she has to make some decisions and now. She can either avoid the truth, or she can go change and let them try to understand her reality. Blair decides to go change, and thinks to herself, “ I’ve got some explaining to do, we’ll see just how much they understand when they see without my make-up and long-sleeved turtle neck.”

Blair came out of the bathroom and they all gasped. She had bruises all over.

Tootie didn’t know what to think anymore. She had never in a million years thought that Blair would end up like this, anybody but Blair Nicole Warner. Blair had always been so confident, thought that she was perfect; how did this happen?

Natalie was devastated. This couldn’t happen. She knew one thing for sure, if it was the last thing that she did she would get Blair out. She wouldn’t leave Peekskill, until it was accomplished and Blair was with one of them. Blair had always been there to save her when she was in trouble, now Natalie was going to save Blair; no ands, ifs, or buts about it.

Jo wanted only one thing, she wanted five minutes alone with Don Westland. She was going to kill him for what he’d done to Blair. She’d start by giving him identical bruises to Blair’s, one by one. She would make sure that he paid dearly for what he’d done.

Edna was having trouble keeping the tears in. It just wasn’t right; Blair shouldn’t be living this. This was something that Edna couldn’t make all better, and it angered her.

*********************************************

Blair could taste the anger in the room, and knew that she had to say something and now.

Blair: Guys, he’s a wonderful husband.

Jo: No, he isn’t! He beats you that isn’t being a wonderful husband.

Edna: Sweetie, you have to leave him.

Blair: No, I can’t, I won’t.

Tootie: Why not?

Blair: I knew that the four of you would never understand.

Natalie: What is it that we don’t understand?

Blair: He loves me.

Edna: That isn’t love, when someone loves you they don’t beat you.

Blair: It isn’t like that.

Tootie: Then explain it to us.

Blair: He hits me, when I do something bad. He cares what kind of wife, mother, and woman I am. If he didn’t love me, he wouldn’t care what kind of person I was.

Jo: That’s bull, Warner, and you know it.

Blair starts to get really upset and by this time is screaming.

Blair: Westland, Jo! Donald Oliver Westland loves me, me and only me! I thank God for everyday that I’m with him! He loves me!

Natalie stands up and goes over to Blair. She puts her arms around her.

Blair felt Natalie’s arms around her and fought it, but after awhile she couldn't, it just felt so good to be held.

Natalie sat down with her sobbing friend and just held her.

Blair: He loves me, Nat. He really does love me.

Natalie: Shh, Shh. Let it all out, sweetie. It’s going to be okay.

*********************************************

Natalie held Blair until she fell asleep.

Natalie: This stops now.

Tootie: She’s a grown woman, we can’t force her to leave him. We can do our best to open her eyes, but in the end it has to be her decision.

Edna: Tootie, we can’t let her leave with him. Don has to be stopped, before this situation gets any worse.

Jo: Don’t worry, Mrs. G. Blair isn’t leaving with him. I won’t let that happen, and that’s a promise. Don Westland’s reign of terror will be over before the week is out. I don’t care what it takes; Blair will open her eyes and file for divorce. Blair Westland is going to leave soon and we our going to get Blair Warner back. Kalle and Jayden are never going to have to worry about protecting their mommy, from their daddy’s anger again.

Charlotte Rae Fan and FOL_lover, thank-you for the replies. I'm working on the next chapter, but I have a little bit of writer's block. This chapter is going to deal with two things Blair's assault, I say assualt because he's going to do more than just beat her. The other thing is the girls guilt when her kids find her, they promised that they'd protect Blair and her kids, but they took the kids to the park. While they were at the park Don had his way with Blair. That is a summary, but I don't know how to start it; right now I only have the outline.
All suggestions are welcome.

Chapter 7

Jo, Natalie, Tootie and Edna got up at 8:30. They found eight children wide awake, two of which were obviously not very happy campers. Jo right away called Rikki over.

Jo: Rikki, what’s wrong with Kalle and Jayden?

Rikki: They’re mad at Samantha, Joey, and me.

Natalie: Why?

Rikki: We’ve been up about half an hour. We saw that you guys were still asleep, and decided to let you stay asleep. So, when they wanted to go wake up Aunt Blair we pulled rank.

Tootie: Oh.

Rikki: Yeah, we told them that they had to wait for mommy to wake up.

Edna: Let me guess, they asked why.

Rikki: Exactly. They said that they woke her every morning why not now. I knew that she had a particularly long night, so I told them because I’m the oldest. Joey and Samantha backed me up, saying that I was right and until you guys got up I was in charge. Now they hate me, and I do believe are on the verge of the biggest tantrum duet that has ever been witnessed.

Jo: She did, how did you know?

Rikki: Mom, the two of you weren’t exactly whispering. I heard you yell something to the effect of that’s bull, and then her begin to scream at you, followed by sobbing. It just didn’t sound like a particularly good night.

Jo: Okay, guys lets see if we can come those two down. Blair really doesn’t need two wake up to two wailing children, who are acting like torture victims. I’ll get Kalle.

Edna: I’ll get Jayden.

Natalie: I’ll get breakfast.

Tootie: And I’ll get the other kids occupied.

At this percise moment, Rikki’s prediction comes true and Jayden and Kalle begin to wail at the top of their lungs.

Natalie and Tootie: Good-luck, you two.

Jo: We’re going to need it.

Edna: Especially, when Blair hears them. I don’t know what’s going to be worse to hysterical children, or their furious mother.

Jo and Edna each pick up a child and do their best to calm them down.

Tootie: I’m taking the rest outside. This is getting crazy.

Jo: Good idea.

Tootie leaves with Rikki, Joey, Samantha, Nathan, Jessica, and Dennis.

Jo: Mrs. G. don’t worry, Blair is a reasonable woman. She’ll understand that kids get upset.

Edna: But Mommy won’t. The second that she hears the screaming the overprotective mommy in her will awaken. I give us five minutes, before melt down.

Edna said this at 8:40, at 8:45 Blair came running down the stairs pregnant belly and all. Kalle and Jayden jumped out of Jo and Edna’s arms and ran full speed ahead at their mother. Blair swooped them up into her arms in a single movement.

Blair: Princess, what’s wrong?

Kalle: Mom... mom...mommyyyyyyyyy.

Blair: Shh, shh. It’s okay mommy’s here. Baby, can you tell me what’s wrong.

Jayden: They woo...wou..wouwou...wouldn’t lelelet

He breaks down sobbing. Edna’s thinking God help us. Natalie, Tootie and the other kids have entered the room by this point.

Blair: Mrs. Garrett, I can’t get anything out of them; what weren’t they allowed to do?

Jo: Wake you up. They wanted to go with you, but we thought it was better that you slept.

Blair: Oh, really.

Tootie: Uh-oh.

Blair: I get it.

Jo: See Mrs. G. I told you, that she’d understand.

Blair glared at Jo.

Blair: Of course, I do. I understand that you thought that you had some kind of right to decide how I raise my children. I want you to understand, these children have never been kept from me. It isn’t going to start now. I’m their mother and I not you will decide what’s best, in any area that concerns them. Now you two, let’s get you bathed, dressed and fed.

Blair walked into the kitchen to make breakfast. Natalie had attempted to feed them cereal, but it couldn’t compare to mommy’s home cooking. It took two hours, but everyone was finally happy, clean, dressed, and fed. Blair looked exhausted. Jo knew that she needed a nap and bad.

Jo: Blair, can I take the kids to the park? I’d like to make this morning up to them and everyone else is going, may be you could take a nap.

Blair: I don’t know it’s up to them. Do you two want to go with Grandma, your aunts, and your cousins to the park?

Kalle: Aunt Natalie.

Natalie: What is it, sweetheart?

Kalle: Is Nathaniel going?

Natalie laughs.

Natalie: Yes, Nathan is going.

Nathan: Mommy, it’s Nathaniel.

Tootie: I thought you didn’t want your mom calling you Nathaniel.

Nathan: Nathaniel is a beautiful name, I’m proud of it.

Kalle: That’s right, Nathaniel.

Jo: Blair, watch out for her. She’s four and she already has a boy whipped.

Kalle: Mommy, what does Aunt Jo mean?

Blair: Nothing princess. So, we have one vote for yes. What about you, baby?

Jayden: I don’t know.

Rikki: Your mom said you like to paint.

Jayden: Yes.

Rikki: Well, I’m going to write a story at the park. It could use some pictures, why don’t you come so that you can see the park, and paint the pictures for my story?

Jayden: Really?

Rikki: Yeah.

Jayden: Okay.

They start to walk out the door.

Jo: Don’t worry Blair, I’ll bring them home as soon as they want to.

Blair: Thanks.

Kalle and Jayden: Bye, Mommy.

Blair: Bye. Have a good time.

Blair laid down on the couch, she was too tired to go upstairs. She got up fifteen minutes later when the doorbell rang. She automatically thought, it didn’t take the kids long to want to come home. She opens the door, and there was Don.

Don: Hi, honey. You’ve been a very bad girl, and now you’re going to get it.

Chapter 8

Jo and the rest of the gang got home three hours later. She hoped that Blair had gotten enough sleep. Kalle and Jayden of course ran through the kitchen to the stairs for their mother. Jo couldn’t help but think about how finally Blair had allowed them to do something to help her; little did she know that she would regret it. They’d stopped for ice cream on the way home, and were just about to dig in when Kalle ran in sobbing and threw herself in Jo’s arms.

Jo: Honey, what’s wrong!?!

Kalle: Mommy, mommy, mommy

Edna: What happened to mommy?

Kalle: Hurt, lots of blood, won’t wake up.

Natalie: Oh, dear God.

Tootie: You guys go up, I’ll try to calm her down.

Tootie was worried, but she couldn’t show it for the kids’ sakes especially Kalle’s she just couldn’t.

Jo, Natalie, and Edna had never moved so fast in their lives. They got to the room and opened the door, to a heart-wrenching scene. Blair was nothing more than a motionless bundle in the bed, and Jayden was at her head with his arms around her looking ready to kill anyone that dared to go anywhere near his mommy. Edna went near and got him to let go, she couldn’t bare to know what was under the bundle, so she took Jayden to join Tootie and the others.

Jo went to the bed and pulled off the covers. Natalie couldn’t handle it; it looked like Blair’s face had been through a meat grinder. She walked into the hall, and slid to the floor crying. It no longer mattered what Blair wanted anymore. Natalie was determined; Don would pay a high price for his actions, as a reporter she knew the reaction of the average jailed criminal to a man who mistreated a woman. She got up and went to the phone.

Natalie: Operator, I need the number to the Peekskill Police Department.

Jo just held her best friend, with tears streaming down her face.

Jo: Blair, what happened?

Blair replied in a weak tear filled voice.

Blair: I disobeyed, so Don punished me.

Jo: I don’t care what you did. No one deserves to have this done to them.

Blair: Where are the kids? I didn’t want for them to see me like this, I know that they must be terrified.
Jo: They’re down stairs let’s get you out of bed. I’ll help you clean up and we’ll go see them.

Jo helped Blair out of bed, and that was when she noticed the puddle of blood on the sheets. Jo’s blood boiled. She knew full well what that idiot husband of Blair’s had done to her.

Jo: Where did that come from?

Blair: What?

Jo: The blood, Blair, the blood!

Blair: Jo, I....

Jo softens her voice.

Jo: Sit back down, and tell me.

Blair breaks down, in Jo’s arms.

Blair: Don came up to make up, he wanted to make love. I said no, my whole body hurt. Jo, I could barely breathe, it hurt so bad.

Jo: And then what happened?

Blair: He reminded me that I’m his wife and that I have absolutely no right to say no to him. He got on top of me, he unzipped his pants, and he...he...

Jo: I knew it. I’M GOING TO KILL HIM!

Blair: No.

Jo: What? How can you say that?

Blair: He’s right, he’s my husband.

Jo: Bull. It’s called spousal rape. You see a wedding license and a ring don’t give him the right to ignore you when you say no.

Blair was about to say something when they heard the commotion downstairs.

Don: SHE’S MY WIFE! THEY’RE MY CHILDREN! WHERE DO YOU GET OFF TELLING ME THAT TO GET AWAY FROM THEM!?! BLAIR! DOWN HERE NOW! THAT’S AN ORDER!

Blair went running.

Rick and the other men were furious. Tootie and Edna had called and told them everything that was going on. All four of them were fully prepared to take Don out to the alley and teach him a little lesson. As their thoughts got more violent the doorbell rang. Snake opened the door to reveal Don.

Don: I’m here to see my family.

Jeff: Like hell, you’re getting anywhere near them ever again.

Don: You have no right.
Bruce: You have no right, now get out of my house.

Don: You can’t keep me from them.

Don starts toward the kids. Rick gets up and blocks him.

Rick: Look, you were told to leave. If I were you I would, cause if you don’t I swear that you’re going to regret it.

Don: No. You’re going to regret it if you don’t get out of my way now.

Rick: I’m not Blair, you don’t scare me.

Jeff: You don’t seem to get it, we aren’t going to let you ever hurt Blair again.

Bruce: We aren’t about to let those beautiful children continue to experience what they did today. No child should ever have to see their mommy like that; the baby that Blair is expecting never will and these two never will again.

Snake: May be we should take him outside and see how he does with people who can fight back.

Tootie: That’s the best idea that I’ve ever heard.

Edna: No, I won’t let you stoop to his level.

Snake: But...

Natalie: No, I have much better plans for our pal here.

Don walks up to Natalie.

Natalie doesn’t back away.

Natalie: I made a few phone calls. Donald Oliver Westland, you have absolutely no idea just how dearly you’re going to pay for your treachery. Be prepared to pay the price. I promise that it’s going to be high. You’re going to beg for us to save you, and simply throw you to the men.

At this point Don lost it, he started yelling. Within seconds Blair was by his side. He grabbed her by the wrist.

Don: We’re leaving, get the kids.

Blair: Don, you’re hurting me.

Don: DON’T YOU DARE TALK BACK TO ME!!!

Don slaps Blair.

Jayden: NO!!! DADDY YOU’RE HURTING MOMMY, AND I WON’T LET YOU!!! I’M A BIG BOY AND WON’T LET YOU!!!

Don: WHAT DID YOU SAY!!! HOW DARE YOU, YOU UNGRATEFUL LITTLE BRAT!!!

Hi, guys. I need your help for the next chapter. Blair's white knight is going to be introduced. I'd like to know who you'd like to see and why. Here are your options.

1)Ben- Is now a police officer. He happens to respond to Natalie's call.

2)Casey- The girls decide that Blair should seek counseling, to help her through the transition of divorce. She goes for her first session and it's Casey.

3)Cliff- When Blair is taken to the hospital, she is taken behind a curtain to await the doctor. The doctor turns out to be none other than Cliff.

4)Evan- Evan was Blair's childhood best friend. Evan always loved Blair. Blair always saw him as a brother. Evan's been living in Spain, when he comes home he hears from his parents who were Monica and David's friends that Blair is divorcing. He asks Monica and David and hears the whole story. He goes to Peekskill, determined to win Blair's heart and show her true love.

I'm personally leaning toward Evan, but I want to know what you guys think. Also, in my story I'm having Monica and David have reconciled, so they are together.

I just wanted to let everyone know that the next chapter may take a couple of days or it could be up tonight. You see tomorrow is my first day back at school, so I don't know how the time preparing and all is going to work out.

Chapter 10

Blair watched as Don moved on her baby. She knew right then and there that this had to end. Don would have to kill her before she let him hurt one of the kids. She was one thing the kids, another.

Blair: DON! GET AWAY FROM HIM!

Don stops screaming, and starts to talk to Blair in a really dark creepy voice.

Don: So, you finally got guts did you.

Blair: I won’t let you hurt Jayden, Kalle, or Olivia. I let you get away with hurting me, but not them, never them.

Don lunged toward Blair as the doorbell rang. Natalie ran for it, she hoped that the police had finally decided to respond.

Natalie was relieved to see that the Peekskill Police Department, had indeed came through. How was she to know that seconds later she’d be infuriated be their actual response to the situation.

Natalie: Hello, officer.

Police Officer: Hello, m’am. We got a domestic violence call at this address.

Natalie: Yes, sir. I’m the one that called.

Police Officer: Can you tell me what happened?

Natalie tells the officer everything.

Police Officer: I’m sorry m’am. There is nothing that I can do, unless Mrs. Westland chooses to press charges.

Don: She won’t officer. We just had a little misunderstanding. My wife’s friends are over protective, and took what was happening the wrong way. Isn’t that right, honey?

Blair: No, officer it isn’t. I’d like to press charges both for the beating and for the rape.

Natalie: RAPE!

Jo: Yeah, Nat rape.

At this point Edna loses it and throws herself at Don. It takes Rick, Snake, Jeff, and Bruce to keep her from getting to him, and they are having trouble holding her.

Tootie: Officer, I strongly suggest that you get that thing out of here now before she kills it.

The police officer handcuffs Don.

Police Officer: Donald Oliver Westland, you are under arrest for the assault of Blair Nicole Westland. You have the right to remain silent, anything that you say can and will be used against you in a court of law. You have the right to an attorney, if you cannot afford one and wish to have one, one will be appointed. Do you understand these rights as they have been read to you?

Don: Yes.

The police officer takes Don away, and the kids run to Blair.

Kalle: Mommy, I was so scared. You wouldn’t wake up.

Jayden: I would have kept you safe.

Blair: You two listen, I know that you were scared. You will never have to be scared again, Daddy isn’t coming back I promise. Second, it’s my job to keep you safe, not yours to keep me safe. I promise that, that won’t ever be a problem again. Third, I love you.

Kalle and Jayden: We love you, too.

Tootie: Blair, you’re hurt I think we should go to the hospital so that someone can check you out.

Jo: Good idea, I’ll take you.

Blair: Okay, guys. I want to make sure that nothing happened to Olivia.

Natalie: I’ll take care of Kalle and Jayden, don’t worry.

Blair: Thanks, Nat. Let’s go.

Blair and Jo grab their purses and head for the door. As they’re leaving, Edna pulls Blair into her arms.

Edna: I’m so sorry, sweetie. I should have protected you.

Blair: You have nothing to be sorry for, Mrs. Garrett. You didn’t know until last night, and even so you couldn’t do anything about it, you couldn’t make me leave him. I’m a grown up now, and only I could make that decision, I’d probably still be with him if he hadn’t gone after Jayden. You did what you could; you tried to make me see the light.

Blair and Jo leave, and Nat and Tootie hold Edna.

An hour later Blair and Jo return from the hospital to three very anxious women.

Blair: Where are the kids?

Natalie: Taking a nap.

Jo: And the men?

Tootie: They took the older kids back to the apartment for videos and pizza. They want us to get a chance to talk in peace.

Edna: So, what happened?

Jo: Clean bill of health.

Blair puts her hand on her belly.

Blair: Both of us. I think I’ll go check on the kids.

Blair leaves.

Jo’s relieved now she can be more honest with the girls and Mrs. G. about the doctor’s visit. Edna realizes that something’s up as soon as she sees the look on Jo’s face.

Edna: What did she make you leave out? Don’t tell me nothing, because I can see in your face that it’s something.

Jo: Mrs. G. the doctor said that her and the baby are lucky to be alive. Most women die, after being beaten that severely.

Natalie: How could he?

Jo: What she doesn’t know is that the doctor was so worried that he showed me an X-ray. It showed all of her healed broken bones. Her body looked like a jigsaw puzzle that’s how bad it was, and that was only her arms and legs. Radiation is bad for the baby, so they put that led vest that they use over her stomach to keep the baby safe. Unfortunately, it also keeps the X-ray from showing us what that part of her body looks like.

Tootie: But how is the prosecution supposed to prove how badly Blair was beaten without a full X-ray?

Jo: Easy. With the pictures that were taken of Blair. It was bad all of her body looked like it had been tenderized. You think what we saw last night was bad; you don’t know the least of it.

Edna: Don’s time is up. Last night I called David and Monica after you guys had gone to sleep. David wants him dead, and you know that what David Warner wants David Warner gets.

At that moment the doorbell rang.

Evan Michaels couldn’t believe that the only thing standing between him and Nikki was a door. He was furious. He had arrived home yesterday morning asking about her; his parents hadn’t painted him a pretty picture. He’d gone to David and Monica’s for the whole story, and got to hear that awful phone call. After that he knew that she needed him, and so he drove all night to get to her and now here he was. He rang the doorbell.

Natalie decided that she would get the door.

Natalie: I’ll get it.

Natalie and opened the door, and there stood the most gorgeous human being that she had ever seen. Jo, Edna and Tootie were dying to know who this man was.

Evan: Hello, I’m here to see Nikki.

Chapter 11

Natalie needed to know who this Nikki person was and why she was so lucky. She loved Snake, but this was definitely the best piece of eye candy that she had ever seen. As a writer it was her obligation to find out the whole story. Who was Nikki, and why was there a tone of adoration in his voice when he said her voice?

Natalie: I’m sorry, sir there’s no one named Nikki here. We do, however, have a phone book if you want to look her up.

Evan: No, I’m sorry.

Natalie: Why?

Evan: You probably know her as...

Jo was the only one who saw Blair coming down the stairs and her eyes widen when she saw the man standing in the doorway.

Blair: Alex!!!

Evan: Nikki!!!

All four women stood in awe as their very pregnant formerly depressed friend took the stairs two at a time. She flew into the man’s arms and he swung her around, obviously oblivious to her girth. He finally put her down, and looked at the four shocked faces.

Evan: As I was saying, you probably know her as Blair.

Jo: And you would be?

Blair: Evan Michaels.

Tootie: Okay, if this guy is Evan; why did you call him Alex?

Natalie: Why did he call you Nikki?

Edna: And where do you know him from?

Blair: We grew up together. He was my best friend; I call him Alex because his middle name is Alexander.

Evan: And I call her Nikki, because as you probably know her middle name is Nicole.

Jo: I’ll have to remember that.

Blair: No you won’t.

Jo: Why not?

Blair: Evan and only Evan can call me Nikki.

Evan: And Blair and only Blair can call me Alex.

Jo: Touchy, touchy.

That is when Blair heard them, two tiny voices wailing.

Kalle: Mommy!

Jayden: Mommy!

Blair: I’ll be right back, duty calls.

Evan watched as the most beautiful woman that he had ever seen in his twenty-eight years on the planet walked upstairs to her waiting children.

Jo: Your in-love with her aren’t you?

Evan: How did you know?

Jo: I don’t know, may be the way your face lit up the second that you laid eyes on her.

Evan: I always have loved her. She never paid attention to me, I was her brother and confidant in her eyes not her future. I haven’t seen her since I left for boarding school in Spain in my sixth grade year. We wrote constantly, until she left for Eastland the next year. I decided to stay in Spain after graduation, until my father retired and I had to come back to merge his company with the one that I started you know keep what he worked for in the family. The first thing that I did when I got home was ask my parents about her, they said that she was married. They also said that there were rumors that it wasn’t a good marriage, but that they didn’t have any details. I wasn’t satisfied. I went to talk to David and Monica, they confirmed that it wasn’t a match made in heaven. While I was there the phone rang; it was a long distance call from Peekskill, New York. David was so furious when he got off of the phone, that I found out exactly how bad things were. I drove all night, this time she won’t get away.

Edna: Good.

Evan: My turn to ask the questions.

Tootie: Shoot.

Evan: What happened to her? Why is she all bruised up?

Jo: I think that you know the answer to that one.

Evan: Where is he?

Edna: Who?

Evan: You know who, the S.O.B.

Edna: In jail.

Jo: She finally pressed charges.

Natalie: Today he went after one of the kids and that was the end of the love affair.

Evan: What were the charges? If I know, I can call my attorneys and make sure that they stick, and that he gets the maximum sentence. I have connections and I’m going to use them.
Jo: I don’t think that you want to know.

Tootie: Jo, he has to know.

Edna: I agree with Jo, it’s just not right to tell him.

Natalie: Yes it is.

Blair was coming down the stairs. She heard what was going on and knew that she had to tell him. Luckily, the kids were getting ready. She was going to take them and Evan to Chucky Cheese. It was sneaky, but necessary. At Chucky Cheese there would be no Jo, Natalie, Tootie, or Mrs. Garrett and the kids would be busy playing this way the two of them could talk uninterrupted. There was so much of her hell that she’d kept hidden from the girls, so much that she wasn’t ready to tell them yet, but knew that she could tell him.

Natalie: The charges were domestic violence and um...

Blair: rape.

Natalie turned around to see Blair standing on the last step.

Evan: Come here sweets.

Blair walked into his embrace and cried allowing herself to be truly comforted. The girls were relieved, as much as they had held her it wasn’t like this. He could touch something, release something that none of them could. Jo now knew that as close as they had all been, not one of them had the connection to Blair that Evan did. She had been holding back, subconsciously waiting for her prince charming to return to her on his white horse and rescue her from her torment.

Chapter 12

Blair knew that she had to talk soon. She couldn’t do it here so she just hoped that the kids would be ready to leave soon. It took fifteen minutes, but two sets of little feet finally came rushing down the stairs.

Kalle: Ready, Mommy.

Jayden: Let’s go.

Blair: Wait just a second. I want you to meet an old friend of Mommy’s. This is your Uncle Evan. Evan this is Kalle Marie, Jayden Andrew, and soon to be making her grand appearance Olivia Michelle.

Kalle jumps into Blair’s arms.

Kalle: Hi.

Jayden lifts his arms up to Evan, who picks him up.

Jayden: Hi, Uncle Evan.

Evan: Please to meet you two.

He puts his hand on Blair’s belly.

Evan: And I’m anxiously awaiting your grand entrance. Blair, where are we going?

Blair: I thought that I’d take the three of you to Chucky Cheese. The kids can gorge themselves on pizza, and we can talk. Is that okay?

Evan: Sure. Let’s go.

He goes over to Kalle.

Evan: Hey, princess would you like to ride on my shoulders?

Kalle: Really.

Evan: Absolutely.

Kalle: I always wanted to but Daddy wouldn’t let me.

Evan: Well, we’ll fix that right now. Let’s go.

Blair and Evan walk out with the kids. Evan has Kalle on his shoulders and Jayden on his right arm, his left arm around Blair.

Jo was extremely pleased. She could tell that Evan was a good man. She would everything in her power to make sure that he got his dream. Blair deserved a good man and Kalle and Jayden deserved a good Daddy.

Blair watched as her children and Evan played. She signaled to Evan, that they would be okay alone. Evan made sure that they were settled and went to join Blair at the table.

Evan: Nikki, you should really eat something.

Blair: I’ll eat at home, pizza isn’t exactly the best thing to eat when you’re pregnant.

Evan: What happened?

Blair looked at him with tears streaming down her face. Evan went and sat next to her with his arms wrapped tightly around her.

Evan: I want to know it all sweets.

Blair: It started on our wedding night.

Over the next hour, Blair told her confidant all about the bad, the worse, and the purely brutal. Don was a monster. Finally, everything was out in the open and the kids were ready to go home, so they left.

Natalie had never seen the kind of anger that she saw in Evan when they returned. He looked homicidal.

Blair: It’s bed time.

Kalle: Uncle Evan?

Evan: Yes, princess.

Kalle: Will you come with mommy and tuck me in?

Evan: Of course I will, I wouldn’t miss it for anything in the world.
Blair: I’ll get them upstairs, and then you can come up. Come on, Jayden.

Jayden: I’ll go with Uncle Evan. I need to tell him something.

Blair: May I know what?

Jayden: No. It’s a secret. Boys only.

Evan: Yeah, Nikki boys only.

Blair laughs.

Blair: I get the hint. Come on, Kalle we’ll share our girl secrets while the boys talk.

Blair takes Kalle upstairs.

Evan: Now, what is it buddy?

Jayden: Thank-you, Uncle Evan.

Evan: For what? I haven’t done anything.

Jayden: For taking care of my Mommy.

Evan and the others had tears in their eyes. A two-year-old shouldn’t have experienced all of the things that this little boy had experienced.

Evan: Come on buddy, let’s go and meet your Mommy and sister.

Jayden: Can I ride on your shoulders?

Evan: Sure.

Evan swung Jayden up on his shoulders and galloped up the stairs to Blair and Kalle, with Jayden laughing and saying, “ Giddy up, horsey.”

Edna knew at that moment that this man was here to stay. She didn’t have to worry any longer he would take care of her little girl and her little girl’s babies.

Chapter 13

The next few days flew by. Don had called once, and Blair considered dropping the charges and taking him back. It had taken Evan and the girls hours and hours upon hours to convince her to forget that idea. Evan already had his lawyers pushing the both the divorce and the charges through, he wasn’t going to give her a chance to change her mind. Kalle and Jayden were in-love; their Uncle Evan was everything that they had dreamed of in a Daddy. The only thing missing was for their Mommy to stop seeing him as a brother and start seeing him as a man.

Evan: Come on, Nikki.

Blair: I don’t think that it’s right.

Jo: Blair go out with Evan.

Natalie: It’s dinner only dinner and you deserve it. We’ll take care of the kids you and Evan go.

Blair: Okay.

Edna: Good girl.

Blair: So Alex, where to?

Evan: A surprise.

Evan had set up a wonderful picnic. He had roses, soft music, candlelight, a table under the stars in short the fairy tale of what romance should be. He was ready to make each and every one of her dreams come true. Tonight was the night. He would win her heart; he could feel in his bones that starting today it would be him and not Don Westland that had the keys to her heart. He was going to make her shine again. Tootie had told him that she stopped lighting up the room the day she married Don, today that would change. He looked over and saw over the candles that her eyes were gleaming with tears.

Evan: What’s wrong, sweets?

Blair: It’s nothing.

Evan: You’ve always told me everything. I don’t want you to stop now.

Blair: Evan, I’m confused.

Evan: Evan, that means it’s serious.

Blair: It is.

Evan: I am too Blair, tell me what’s wrong.

Blair: Evan, I think I’m falling in-love. Don is slowly becoming an unpleasant memory. There’s no way that what I thought I felt for him can compare with what I’m feeling right now.

Evan’s heart soared. He went and sat next to her.

Evan: What’s wrong with that?

Blair: I don’t deserve him. I don’t deserve you.

Evan cupped her chin in his hand and looked deeply into her eyes.

Evan: Nikki, I’m the unworthy one. You’ve just made me the happiest man on the face of this Earth. I’ve loved you all of my life, and now you’re telling me that you love me. Today is the best day of my entire life.

Evan leaned into kiss her. Just as his lips touched hers he felt her cringe.

Blair was enjoying the love of the man that she loved when she felt it. The first contraction and a bad one. It had been like this with Kalle and Jayden too; most women had mild pain for days. She had to be different and start with a bang.

When Evan looked to see why she’d cringed, he saw that she was in obvious pain.

Evan: Nikki?

Blair: Alex, we have to go.

He was getting scared.

Evan: Why?

Blair: If I tell you, you have to promise me that you’ll stay calm.

Evan: I promise.

Blair: I just went into labor.

Evan: WHAT!?! Hospital, no Edna’s! Where do we go!?! What do we do!?!

Blair: First, you keep your promise and calm down. Second, you call Mrs. Garrett’s house have her and the girls meet us at Saint Mary’s Hospital. Third, you call my parents. Fourth, now that you’ve had time to calm down you drive me to the hospital.
Fifth, you act as my coach. Got it?

Evan: Got it.

Blair: Good.

Blair had a brutal contraction then, and Evan once again lost it.

Evan: NIKKI!!!

Blair had to wait until the contraction ended to talk to him.

Blair: Remember the steps. Now let’s go. I need you to stay focused though. You can’t freak out every time that I have a contraction. Trust me they’re going to get worse. I’m calm now but later I might not be, I’m going to need for you to stay calm and get me through this okay, darling.

Evan’s protective side came through at that moment.

Evan: Okay, let’s go. I’ll call Edna from the car.

With that he wrapped his arm around her and led her to the car. Tonight was definitely destiny. He had the woman that he loved, and now he was be given the chance to support her and show her his love and devotion.

Chapter 14

Jo was going crazy she wanted to know what had happened, as did the others. Just as Natalie was going to ask what time it was for the one hundredth time that night when the phone rang. Jo raced to the phone.

Jo: Hello?

Evan: Jo?

Jo: Evan, what is it?

Evan: You guys need to meet us at Saint Mary’s Hospital now.

Jo: WHAT’S WRONG!?!

The girls were starting to panic. Why was Jo so upset?

Evan: Calm down. Blair went into labor. It isn’t exactly pleasant watching her suffer, but she’s fine.

Jo: Okay. I’m calm and we’ll be there in fifteen minutes.

Edna: Jo, what happened?

Jo: Blair went into labor. Evan needs us to go to Saint Mary’s Hospital.

Tootie: Let’s go, what are we waiting for?

Natalie: Let’s see we need to get the kids first, then we’ll leave.

Jo: There are twelve of us. We’re going to need three cars, four per car.

Jo goes to the stairs and calls out to the kids.

Jo: Kids come down here right now.

The kids can hear that tone of do as I say and now, so it didn’t even take them thirty seconds to get down stairs and be standing in front of Jo.

Jo: Guys, Aunt Blair’s going to have her baby. She’s on her way to the hospital, and we need to meet her there. We’re taking three cars; four per car here are the arrangements. Nathan, Kalle, and Jayden you three are coming with me. Samantha, Jessica, and Dennis you guys are riding with Aunt Natalie. Rikki and Joey you two are with Aunt Tootie and Grandma now let’s go.

Evan thought that he was going to lose his mind. Blair was screaming every ten minutes for thirty seconds. It was killing him and they weren’t even on the highway yet. He wished that he’d called Jo after David and Monica, she’d freaked out and then calmed down. They were still freaking out. They had been calling every five minutes for news. Monica kept on saying tell my baby that Mommy’s on her way. David for his part was yelling at his personal pilot that he had enough money to buy the airport and that it was in the air traffic controller's best interest to give the Warner jet clearance now if he wanted to have a job come morning. He looked at Blair and tried to comfort her.

Evan: Don’t worry sweets we’ll be there in no time.

Blair had never felt more frustrated in her life. It was a full two hours between Evan’s we’ll be there soon and their actual arrival at the hospital. The only thought going thought going through her mind was EPIDURAL, and now or heads would roll.

Blair: Evan, darling, sweetheart.

Evan didn’t like the tone that Blair was using. It was dangerously sweet. He just hoped that his fear wasn’t evident in his voice.

Evan: Yes.

Blair: Get me inside and drugged, NOW!!!!!!!!!!

Jo saw them pull up. She felt bad for Evan; they had already been waiting an hour and forty-five minutes. This time plus the fifteen minutes that it had taken them to get to the hospital meant that he had been forced to spend two hours stuck in a car with a laboring woman. Jo’s feelings were confirmed when she heard Blair yell at him. She went and opened the passenger side door to save Evan. He looked relieved and mouthed thanks.

Jo: Okay, Blair I’ve got a wheelchair let’s go.

Upon entry Blair was rushed to labor and delivery with one extremely devoted man by her side ready to stick by her until the end. He would never again leave her side, she loved him he loved her and she was having a baby. He couldn’t wait. Kalle, Jayden, and Olivia may biologically not be his, but in every other way they would be. One day, they would expand their family; but if they never did he had enough with Blair and the children.

Chapter 15

Jo felt bad for Blair. It had been twenty-six hours since she had arrived at the hospital. It was eight o’clock Sunday morning and everyone was asleep in the chairs in the waiting room. Jo was the only one awake, and just as she was falling back asleep Evan came running into the waiting room.

Jo: Shh. They’re asleep. What’s the news?

Evan was crying from the emotion of having witnessed Olivia’s birth.

Evan: She’s beautiful and tiny. She weighed in at five pounds, fourteen ounces; eighteen inches long. She came at eight o’clock on the dot.

Jo: How’s Blair can I see them?

Evan: Nikki is as well as can be expected after twenty-eight hours of later. Come with me, I’ll take you to see them. Olivia is still with Nikki. They’re in room number 897.

Edna was waking up as Jo and Evan were leaving.

Edna: Jo, where are you and Evan going?

Jo: Evan, go ahead. Mrs. Garrett and I’ll wake up Kalle and Jayden so that they can see their Mommy and baby sister. Go let Blair know that we’re on our way. Mrs. G. Olivia finally made her grand entrance.

Edna: Really! We should wake up Kalle, Jayden, Monica, David, Bailey, and David, Jr.

Jo: No, only Kalle and Jayden. Let Monica and David and the kids sleep.

Edna and Jo go and pick up the kids and head for the elevator.

Blair had never been happier. It had been a long, hard labor. Olivia, however, had made it worth it. She also had Evan by her side. Don had been at a bar getting drunk when she had been in labor with Kalle and Jayden, he’d arrived after the actual birth and had not been impressed by either of his children. Evan on the other hand had not left her side during the entire process; and even though Olivia wasn’t technically his he was obviously in-love with this tiny little baby. He’d asked her to marry her around hour seventeen, and as soon as she saw him look at the baby in front of him she’d said yes. As soon as her divorce from Don became official; she and Evan would begin the wedding plans.

Jo and Edna knew that Blair and Evan had a secret. It was evident by their cat that swallowed the canary look. They didn’t get a chance to ask about it though, because Kalle and Jayden ran to their mother.

Blair: Hey, you two. Do you want to meet your baby sister?

Kalle and Jayden: Yeah.

Blair: Jo, Mrs. Garrett you too.

Jo and Edna went up to Blair, and Blair pulled back the baby blanket to reveal the most beautiful baby girl they’d ever seen. She was as beautiful and delicate as an exquisitely crafted porcelain doll.

Jo: She’s beautiful.

Edna: Blair, can I hold her.

Blair: Of course.

Blair hands Olivia over to Edna. Jo at the same time decides that Blair and Evan better share their secret and now.

Jo: Okay. I’ve been patient long enough. What are you two hiding?

Blair should have known that Jo would see through her the instant that she laid eyes on her. That knowledge, however, didn’t mean that she had any intention what so ever of turning over the information without a few seconds of pushing the limits of her best friend’s patience first. Blair looked at Evan and he instantly understood and kept his mouth shut.

Blair: What are you talking about Jo?

Jo: Whatever secret it is that you two are keeping from us.

Blair: I have no idea what you’re talking about.

Blair looked at Evan.

Blair: Do you honey?

Evan: No, I don’t sweetheart.

Jo was getting exasperated.

Jo: Come, on! I can see it in your faces!

Blair: Okay, calm down. We’re getting married.

Jo and Edna have tears in their eyes.

Edna: That’s wonderful.

Blair: Of course. I want you Jo to be my matron of honor.

Jo: I’d be honored.

Kalle: Uncle Evan, does this mean that you’re going to be our Daddy?

Evan: Yes, if that’s what you want.

Kalle: Yeah!

Jayden: NO!

Blair: Why, baby?

Jayden: Daddies are mean and they hurt mommies. Mommy, I don’t want Uncle Evan to be mean and hurt you.

Evan walks over to Jayden.

Evan: Buddy, I’d never hurt your Mommy.

Jayden: Promise?

Evan: Promise.

Jayden: Then I want you to be my Daddy.

All three women watched a two-year-old little man hand his responsibility to be a man and protect his mommy over to the man that would now be his Daddy.

For their first anniversary, Blair and Evan exchanged very special gifts. Evan brought Blair three new birth certificates. One for Kalle Marie Michaels, another for Jayden Andrew Michaels and finally one for Olivia Michelle Michaels. These new birth certificates confirmed that the adoption had gone through, Evan was now the children’s father. Blair gave him the results of a recent blood analysis taken at her doctor’s office. Evan and Blair would soon be the parents of four children.
