View Full Version : Favourite Chipmunks
waichingliu81 10-17-2007, 01:49 PM who was your favourite set of cartoon chipmunks? disney's chip'n'dale from chip'n'dale's rescue rangers or ruby spears's alvin, simon and theodore from alvin and the chipmunks?
my vote would go to alvin and his two brothers. plus, unlike chip'n'dale, the chipmunks's cartoons has mass appeal and a massive army of fans ranging in their teens to early and mid 20s to early 40s and 50s.
comedyfreak 10-18-2007, 05:43 AM I like the Alvin and The Chipmunks from the 60's.
tv star collector 10-18-2007, 07:32 PM I, too, preferred Ross Bagdasarian Sr.'s original Chipmunks (THE ALVIN SHOW,
1961). And, may I add, I prefer the original Disney movie shorts that featured
Chip 'n' Dale with Donald Duck to the TV remake RESCUE RANGERS. But, as
far as the characters are concerned, I'd have to say that The Three Chipmunks (Alvin, Simon & Theodore) had better developed personalities
than Chip 'n' Dale, who were chiefly just foils for Donald's temper (in their
original venue). RESCUE RANGERS, like TALE SPIN (which cast characters
from the feature "The Jungle Book"), was an attempt to rework old characters
using a totally different (some would say wrongheaded) approach.

i know where you are coming from. i actually prefer the disney cartoon series, to their feature length motion picture efforts, such as talespin and goof troop but with chip'n'dale rescue rangers it didn't work well. also, in the show they spoke for the first time- something of which they didn't do with their collaborations with donald duck. interesting though that we as an audience were kinda more accepting of alvin, simon and theodore speaking in chipmunk-like voices, but not with chip 'n' dale. but i guess that is probably because we were so used to them speaking as they did in the cartoons, not to mention each of them had their own personalities. with chip'n'dale, as lead characters of their own cartoon series they just never functioned as well as they did as supporting characters
Mikado 10-18-2007, 07:54 PM I prefer Chip 'n' Dale, in their original 1950s forms......I had a ton of C&D comics, when i was a kid, too! ^_^'

Actually, Chip 'n' Dale did speak in the theatre cartoons; their voices were almost exactly the same as the versions on Rescue Rangers. The main difference was, in the old theatrical cartoons, they didnt speak as often, and it was usually in short, clipped sentences, spoken very quickly, to sound almost like the chatter of a real chipmunk...but, they did indeed speak.
Mikado 10-18-2007, 08:02 PM Just as an example of typical C 'n' D talk, they might have said something like :
Dale: Theresabigduckchoppingourtree
Chip: wehavetodosomethingIgotanidea
Dale: Ohboyletsdoit!
Then they would huddle and whisper while their tails wagged at the camera :)

hmm, interesting mikado. as a alvin and the chipmunks fan, i am not looking forward to the movie that is coming out in december. alvin, simon and theodore all look like chip'n' dale than in the cartoon series itself. the makers of the film ****ed up big time. i know people are saying we shouldn't judge until we have seen the entire film but the promo shots and photos look bad. as it's based on the cartoon series, it should bear some resemblance to the cartoon, appearence-wise but, it doesn't. i have a feeling this film is going to bomb at the box office

i think we need slow-mo in order to figure out what they were saying to each other

Yes, you are correct. Dessie Miller and Helen Silbert provided the voices of
Chip 'n' Dale in the series of movie shorts (not sure which was which). And
besides appearing with Donald Duck (and, in their first appearance, with
Mickey Mouse & Pluto), Chip 'n' Dale also starred in three shorts, between
1951 and 1954. In CHIP 'N' DALE RESCUE RANGERS, Corey Burton voiced
Dale and Tress MacNeille was the voice of Chip.
For the record, on THE ALVIN SHOW the late Ross Bagdasarian [Sr.] voiced
Alvin, Simon & Theodore. On ALVIN & THE CHIPMUNKS, his son Ross Jr.
voiced Alvin and Simon; while his wife Janice Karman was the voice of
Theodore.

The same way Underdog bombed and was ****ed up too.

i read about that. it runs in the family i suppose, but kudos to bagdasarian snr and jnr and karman for creating such wonderful characters in alvin, simon, theodore, dave, and the chipettes britanny, jeanette and elenor

very interesting mikey. it's interesting to note that simon isn't wearing his trademark specs and yet he wears what looks like a pink-ish coloured shirt whilst theodore is wearing a blue one. also alvin, isn't wearing his baseball cap
waichingliu81 10-19-2007, 09:36 AM chip'n'dale vrs alvin and the chipmunks
tv star collector 10-19-2007, 10:49 AM That's right. I was eleven years old when "The Chipmunk Song (Christmas
Don't Be Late)" was first played on the radio. They looked like that in
their first Dell comic book, too (THE THREE CHIPMUNKS 4-Color #1042) and
when they appeared on THE ED SULLIVAN SHOW as hand puppets. Three
years later, they were redesigned in a simpler style for the animated THE
ALVIN SHOW, which debuted on Wednesday nights on CBS in prime-time.
They underwent another change for "The Chipmunk Christmas" TV special
(courtesy of animation legend Chuck Jones) and, finally, as they appeared
in ALVIN & THE CHIPMUNKS and "The Chipmunk Movie." But probably not
too many people realize that they began as recording stars.
waichingliu81 10-19-2007, 12:40 PM also, the alvin show first debuted in 1961, 46 years or so ago- and yet this was released 20 years ago until my birth in 1981 and the 80s remake came out in 1985.
here are the intros to the 80s and 90s renditions of alvin and the chipmunks. personally, i prefer the 90s one myself

i also liked the intro to 'the chipmunks go to the movies'

Of course, at this point, they were designs only for album covers and hadnt really been humanised for a cartoon series yet.....I once saw a "Chipmunks Game" at an antique store with the chips drawn this same way ...the only thing they have in common with the modern version is Alvin wearing a red sweater with an "A" on it

i think that as the years went on, their design and look changed dramatically. i actually liked the 88/89 look when the show was taken over by DiC entertainment
Mikado 10-19-2007, 03:30 PM Speaking of changes, originally Chip and Dale looked exactly alike, after a couple of films, Dale was given a red nose, crazy teeth and fuzzy head fur to make him more comical looking....and, with the personality to match
