Wagner not nuts for new 'Bionic Woman'

Lindsay Wagner, who won an Emmy in the late 1970s for her portrayal of Jamie Sommers in "The Bionic Woman," says she has seen the new NBC version, starring Michelle Ryan, and wasn't crazy about it.

"It's very different," she says. "It's very much like what the shows are today, kind of dark and broody and violent - what people seem to be getting off on these days. So, it's not at all what we were doing. We were doing a show for kids intentionally and making it fun and make it in such a way that adults could enjoy it, too, with their children."

Wagner originated the role of Sommers on "The Six Million Dollar Man" in 1975 and played it for three seasons on her own show. She later reprised the role in television movies in 1987, 1989 and 1994.

BW from the 70's was very different. However, it was the 70's. Looking back at it now it would seem very cheesy and outdated, but that is because (again let me reiterate) it was the 70's. It was a great show and I loved it.

I don't blame Lindsay Wagner for being unhappy. I'm not impressed with it myself.

It is a lot different from the original, but I kind of like it.

I liked the new Bionic Woman better when it was called Heroes.

The new Bionic Woman is an ok show but the original was still much better.

I've been watching the new series (and will probably continue doing so), but
the original version starring Lindsay Wagner, when all is said and done, will
remain the definitive one for me. True, it had a lighter tone but in the era
of CHARLIE'S ANGELS and Lynda Carter's WONDER WOMAN, that approach
was the perfect fit. I don't know why people like so much TV shows and
movies that are so dark nowadays. Heck, I still prefer Adam West's BATMAN to the recent versions! Like BIONIC WOMAN, it was cheesy and campy (and
intentionally so) -- but at least it was entertaining for the whole family.
Today's shows and films could use a little tongue-in-cheek humor once in a
while. Just my opinion.

i like the new show (and loved the original) but I do agree with her to a point

...the problem is that no network wants to make shows that are just "fun" or play to a smaller target audience, or anything that is even somehow too different than anything else that is currently on television.

TV's original Bionic Woman has lashed out at Brit Michelle Ryan's remake because it's too violent. Actress Lindsay Wagner, who played superheroine Jaime Sommers in the original 1970s series and subsequent movie spin-offs, isn't a fan of the new action drama, which debuted last month.

She says, "It's very much like what the shows are today - kind of dark and broody and violent... It's not at all what we were doing. We were doing a show for kids intentionally and making it fun in such a way that adults could enjoy it too."
