can someone tell me in the episode Stretch Cunninghum Good Bye did Stretch want to leave All in The Family.

I think they just wrote him out of the show because the character was too limited

Stretch Cunningham was for the most part a character that was referred to, but never seen. Finally James Cromwell played him in three episodes. While they were funny, the character that he played seemed more intelligent than the unseen one that Archie had always talked about. Once they turned this corner, it simply seemed opportune to have another, final, funny use of the unseen character, as he turned out to be Jewish. This also strengthened Archie's character to have to accept that someone so close to him had been a member of a minority.

James Cromwell ( Stretch) left AITF to star in another Norman Lear sitcom Hot L Baltimore. :)

and then YEARS later; he played Zefram Cochraine in the movie "STAR TREK: FIRST CONTACT"-just posted that because I'm bored!:lol:

and in a 3rd season episode; before they started showing him; Archie played a tape of him; and the voice on it was the guy who played Munson-and that was AFTER they started showing Munson!:lol:

I remember in one episode Archie saying that Strech had an IQ of about 1. That was funny stuff.

James Cromwell recently appeared in Spider-Man 3, playing the police father of one of the characters.

i had sum carroll o'connor clippings once & in 1 of the articles was a tidbit where james cromwell sed carroll o'connor had him fired. he sed sumthing like they wanted 2 include stretch in more episodes as sort of a second banana 2 archie & carroll o'connor who was always trying 2 call the shots on set refused & had him killed off instead. this was from a tabloid tho so dont know how much u can really believe but its just food 4 thawt.
