View Full Version : STILL great chemistry?
Darrin1Fan 10-14-2007, 12:50 PM Ok so the majority of fans seem to believe that the chemistry between EM and DS was zilch. But what if the shoe were on the other foot and Dick York had to work with another actress playing Samantha? Would the chemistry have been as sizzling as with EM?
My vote is yes it would for the simple fact that Dick York could ACT so therefore being intimate and loving came naturally to him. Whereas with DS his lack of acting ability was more or less the root cause for the lack of chemistry.
This is obviously PURELY rhetorical so all contributions are valid and I'd like to hear your opinions.
Mikado 10-14-2007, 01:52 PM Its kind of hard to say, one way, or the other, since its only speculation...I think DS's lack of chemistry with EM had more to do with the fact that he wasnt attracted to women, and it came through on the screen.
catlover79 10-14-2007, 11:02 PM What a good question...I know from reading DY's memoirs and various articles that he was head over heels in love with his real-life wife, Joan, to whom he was married for over 40 years until he passed in 1992. He obviously knew how to bring that love and chemistry to the screen. Plus, he and EM just had that very special something that very few screen partners ever get and are lucky to find. It would be hard to find another Samantha and Darrin who were as perfect for the roles - and with each other - as those two were.
Welcome to SO, by the way!! Always nice to find other people who appreciate and enjoy Bewitched as much as I do. :D
OH Nuts! 10-14-2007, 11:06 PM Its kind of hard to say, one way, or the other, since its only speculation...I think DS's lack of chemistry with EM had more to do with the fact that he wasnt attracted to women, and it came through on the screen.
Perhaps--but IMO, I don't think Dick Sargent was as good an actor or had the panache of Dick York. When an actor is good, you have no clue as to their sexual orientation--Rock Hudson is a good example.

Well,i agree that Dick York was a much better actor, so....i guess i'll meet you half way there, Rich.

That almost happened, Tammy Grimes was offered the role of Samantha but turned it down.

I'm glad she turned it down. :D

Likewise, I can't imagine any other actress playing Samantha.
Darrin1Fan 10-15-2007, 04:14 AM Thanx for the welcome catlover79  Yeah I do absolutely love Bewitched.........to quite a worrying degree :o
btw my fave eps are "A is for Aardvark", "Charlie Harper, Winner", "And Then There Were Three" and "Mirror, Mirror On The Wall" (which is my most fave ep) :)
catlover79 10-23-2007, 02:33 PM I think only two other couples on 1960s TV had the same kind of chemistry EM & DY had: Dick Van Dyke and Mary Tyler Moore, plus Barbara Eden and Larry Hagman. :D
Darrin1Fan 10-23-2007, 06:16 PM IMO Larry Hagman is utter cuteness in IDOJ - he's the only reason I watch it :)
