View Full Version : Tragedies (Part 1)
Jinny_Extead 07-19-2001, 08:38 PM Okay, I've decided to post this in three or four big parts...
PROLOGUE~
It had been five years since Jo moved out of Peakskill. Friends always say they'll stay in touch, but life happens. At first Jo, Blair, Natalie, and Tootie stayed in close touch, but that didn't last long. They wrote Christmas and Birthday cards, but that was it. Friends forever, had come to and end. The girls split in four different directions. Blair now married to Cliff, live in Peakskill. Blair is running Eastland and Cliff a doctor at the local hospital. Tootie and Jeff lived in Hollywood, Tootie acting, and Jeff teaching at a university. Natalie and Snake eloped shortly after Jo and Rick were married, having one daughter, Caroline, who is currently five. They settled down in Paris, Texas, both as journalists. Rick was transferred to a club in snowy Minnesota, where Jo followed to teach self-defense. They have two four-year old twins, Eric and Jinny, and Jo is five months pregnant.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Rick, promise me you and Eric will be careful," Jo said worriedly looking at her husband and son.
"Don't worry Jo, the ice storm won't hit until tomorrow. And besides football is important, my son needs to see a game."
"Oh fine Rick. You be good Eric, I love you," Jo said bending down to kiss her son.
"Hey, where my kiss?" Rick asked laughing. Jo leaned over to give her husband a kiss. Rick looked down at Jo's swelled stomach, " and goodbye my future son."
"Or daughter," Jo laughed, "now go." Jo playfully pushed Rick towards the door.
"Bye Jinny," Rick yelled as he walked out the door.
"Bye Daddy," Jinny responded just as the door closed.
"So Jin, what do you want to do?"
"Um... watch a movie."
"Alright, what one?"
"How about motorcycle mania?"
Jo laughed, "Jinny, you really are my daughter. Go put it on and I'll be there in a minute."
"Kay Mommy," Jinny said running into the other room. Jo went to the kitchen table to finish filling out her Christmas cards. She had three left, Blair, Natalie, and Tootie. Jo looked at the list and decided to write them later. She walked in the living room to find that Jinny, had never quite mad it to put the movie on because she was asleep on the couch. 'Good idea Jin... I think I'll join you' Jinny thought as she laid down on the couch.
Jo woke up several hours later; she saw Jinny was still fast asleep. Jo quietly put the TV on to see a late breaking weather report come in. They ice storm had hit, causing the roads to become extremely treacherous. Jo was immediately worried about her son and husband, but she told herself Rick was a great driver, but she still wasn't sure. Suddenly the phone broke though Jo's thoughts, "Hello."
"Is Mrs. Rick Bonner there?"
"This is she. If this is a telemarketing call..."
"Ma'am this is the Minneapolis police department. There's been an accident and your son and husband were killed, I'm sorry. We'll need you to identify the bodies." Jo paled as the man talked and she began to cry. "Mrs. Bonner..."
"Oh yes, of course I'll be there shortly."
"Alright, goodbye." Jo hung up the phone and began crying hysterically. She looked at her daughter 'Poor Jin' she thought, 'to lose her father and best friend on the same day is going to be rough.' Then Jo was overcome with immense sadness when she thought of her unborn child, who would never know their father, or older brother. Jo didn't notice Jinny was awake until she spoke.
"Mommy, why are you crying?"
"Well Jinny," Jo said as she gathered her daughter in her arms, "there has been a terrible accident. Your daddy and Eric are never coming home." Jinny just gave her a confused look, and started crying, simply because her mother was crying.
"Where are they mommy?"
"They died sweetheart. They're angels in heaven now." Jinny hugged her mother tightly and they cried together.
See, I never really had a birthday party unless you wanna count my 15th, when my father showed up for cake, plastered in his underwear! Oh, yeah, by the way, my mom couldn't make it that year either because, well, sadly, six months earlier she blew her brains out!!!!!
Teddy: Jinny, my God.
Jinny: As for my brother, uh yeah, John... see, he just doesn't like you unless your American, white, and straight! and for me, a few weeks ago when I had that nut case after me... yeah, I had to make a little list, of all the guys that I've slept with in the last two years. I couldn't remember some of their names.
Teddy:Stop! What are you...
Jinny: Ya know what? This is who I am, THIS IS MY FAMILY!!!! Come on, it's your turn. You go ahead, flash that all-American, prep school, choir boy smile and you tell me that it doesn't matter! *long pause* Yeah... Thats what I thought.
Tragedies (part 2)
The scene switches to a church. Jo is sitting in the first row next to her mom, dad, and mother-in-law. Jinny sat on her lap. The pastor was speaking, but Jinny wasn't listening. 'Why are Daddy and Eric laying there so still?' she wondered. Jinny didn't understand but was sad that her mommy was sad. Jo and Jinny had always looked alike, but now they looked even more alike. Same straight brown hair and green eyes filled with so much pain. Jinny looked at her mom, and seeing her cry was awful, so she gave her a hug.
After the ceremony and a brief reception Jo, Jinny, and Rose and Charlie Polniaczek were the only ones who remained. Rose turned to Jinny, "Jinny, come with Grandma Rose." Rose led her granddaughter to a chair and sat down. "Jinny promise Grandma something. Be a good girl for your Mommy. She needs you now more then ever, okay,"
"Okay Grandma," Jinny said glancing at her mom.
Meanwhile Jo and her dad were talking. "Jo, I've got an idea."
"What about dad?"
"Well how about you and Jin come to live with me in my townhouse. You two would have to share a room, but I'd love it."
"Back in Peakskill... I suppose I could try to get a job teaching at Bates."
"Yeah, come on. Then I'd get to see my two favorite girls. Plus with the little one coming you'll need the help.
"Okay Dad, thanks."
Back at their house Jo and Jinny were sitting on the couch. "Jinny, how would you like to live with Grandpa in New York?"
"But how will Daddy and Eric find us?"
"Oh Jinny, your daddy and brother are never coming back again." Jo explained as nicely as possible. "Didn't you understand?"
"No... but I think I do now." Jinny answered, "Yes, we should go with grandpa." Jinny climbed on her mother's lap and they stayed that way for several minutes.
Jinny_Extead 07-28-2001, 01:07 PM Sorryy it took so long...
Within a week Jo and Jinny had left their old life behind, and come back to Peakskill. They shared a king-sized bed in the basement of Charlie's apartment. I think Jin and me are going to go around town today. I can show her my old stomping grounds." Jo said to her father a few days after their arrival.
"Why don't you stop and see Blair?" Charlie suggested.
"No, not yet. Soon." Jo answered. "Come on Jinny. Don't worry Dad, we'll be back for dinner." Jo drove Jinny all around Peakskill, pointing our Langly, Bates and Eastland, along with a newly reopened Over Our Heads.
"Mommy, can we go inside?" Jinny asked looking at Over Our Heads. Jo glanced at herself in the mirror. She had her long hair pulled back in a ponytail and simple maternity clothes.
"Alright, but just for a second."
*
The two girls walked into Over Our Heads and Jo was stunned. It was just like she remembered it. "Oh mommy look!" Jinny yelled
"Yeah, it's a fish pen."
"Can I get one?"
"No Jin, you don't need one." A young man came up to them.
"Hi I'm Andy, can I help you with something?" He glanced at Jo and his eyes widened. "Excuse me, but are you Jo?" Jo panicked. It was too soon, the pain still too raw to see old friends asking questions about her husband and son.
"No, come on Jin, we've got to go." Jo and Jinny quickly left, and Andy watched them. 'Hmm,' he thought, 'that looked just like Jo. Oh well, now how many Gumby pens do we have?'
*~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Back in the car, Jinny looked at her mother. She was resting her forehead against the steering wheel and crying. "Mommy, don't be sad."
"Oh honey, that man in there was an old friend of mine," Jo said wiping away her tears, "I have to make a quick stop at bates, then we can go home, okay."
"Okay." Jo hoped Bates would have a spot for her next year because she didn't want to have to go to Eastland and see Blair. Jo pulled up to Bates main office and her and Jinny walked inside. They went over to the secretary.
"Hello, I'm Mrs. Bonner. I have an appointment with Mr. Michaels."
"Oh yes, go right in." Jo and Jinny walked into an office, and a man rose to greet them.
"Hello, I'm Jo Bonner here about a teaching job next year."
"Oh yes, and who might this be?" Mr. Micheals asked looking at Jinny.
"This is my daughter Jinny."
"Hi Jinny... Well Mrs. Bonner your qualifications are perfect, but we have no openings here at Bates."
"Oh, well thank you for your time"
"Wait... but Eastland does have an opening."
"Eastland?"
"Yes, I've asked their headmistress to come over. She should be here any minute."
"Did you give her my name?"
"No, only that you would be perfect for the job. Eastland loves to hire alumni." Jo was very nervous about meeting Blair. What if she asked about Rick.
"So Jinny, how old are you?" Mr. Micheals asked kindly. Jinny just hid behind her mother.
"Jinny is four." Jo answered for her daughter.
"Really," Mr. Michaels said pulling out a picture, "so is my grandson, Daniel." Just then the doors opened to reveal a blonde women, she didn't look at Jo.
"Sorry I'm late Jeff."
"No problem Blair, here's your perfect gym teacher, Mrs. Jo Bonner." Blair suddenly glanced at Jo, surprised.
"Jo... is that you?"
"Yeah Blair, it is!" Jo said.
"Look at you, you're pregnant."
"Very observant Blair," Jo said smiling.
Mr. Micheals cleared his throat, "Do you two know each other?"
"Yeah," Blair answered, "she was my best friend in high school and college."
"Really, well Mrs. Bonner I think you'll get the job!"
"The job, of course, if you want it you got it Jo," Blair exclaimed.
"Thanks, it's great to see you."
"You too, are you moving back?"
"Yeah, I'm living in Peakskill again."
"Are you busy tonight?"
"Actually I need to get Jin home."
"Jin..." Blair finally notices Jinny, "she looks just like you. Except for her nose, that's Rick's nose." At the mention of Rick, Jo's head dropped. She grabbed a piece of paper and wrote her phone number down.
"Here's my number, call me, okay. Bye Blair, Mr. Michaels." With that Jo and Jinny walked out hand in hand.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"How did my two favorite girls like Peakskill?" Charlie asked as Jo and Jinny walked in.
"It was just how I remembered it." Jo said thoughtfully.
Not able to wait any longer, Jinny yelled, "Mommy got a job!"
Charlie smiled and turned to Jo, "At Bates?"
"No, Eastland."
"That means you talked to Blair?"
"Yeah"
"Did you tell her about Rick and Eric?"
"No," Jo whispered.
"Jo, you need to, she can help you."
"I know... I'm tired," Jo said touching her swelled stomach, "this one wears me out. Send Jinny down after dinner." Jo went into her room but she couldn't sleep, instead she pulled out an old photo album. Inside were pictures of her old friends. Jo, Blair, Natalie, and Tootie, the four musketeers. Jo suddenly realized what her friends meant to her, 'maybe I should tell Blair' Jo thought. Suddenly Jinny's little head appeared around the corner.
"Mommy..."
"Come here Jinny."
"Grandpa Charlie wants to know if you're hungry."
"Tell him no. Oh and Jinny, what do you think of the names Richard Eric Bonner, or Blair Erica Bonner for your new brother or sister?"
"Those are good names," Jinny said smiling.
"Alright, go tell Grandpa I'm not hungry."
Jinny ran back through the door and upstairs. This time Jo looked through a newer album, her and Rick's wedding, the birth of Eric and Jinny. Jo knew she should be strong... but she couldn't. And she cried until she fell asleep.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The phone was ringing and someone was shaking Jo. "Mommy, Mommy!"
"What Jin?"
"A lady on the phone wants to talk to you."
"Okay," Jo grabbed the received, "hello."
"Jo, its Blair."
"Oh hey Blair."
"I was thinking, how about lunch tomorrow?"
"That would be great, but there's a problem. My dad won't be home so nobody can watch Jinny."
"What about Rick?"
"He can't either."
"Okay, you have twins right. Well bring them both. Meet me at Perkins, okay."
"Um... okay. Bye."
"Bye"
Jinny_Extead 07-29-2001, 12:28 PM Thanks for the kind replies, heres more.
The next morning Jo and Jinny left the house for Perkins. Jo was nervous about Blair and Jinny was nervous at meeting someone new. They pulled into Perkins and Jo saw Blair sitting at a corner table. "Come on Jinny." She grabbed her daughter's hand and walked over to Blair. "Hey"
"Hi Jo, and you're Jinny." She said bending down next to Jinny, "my name is Blair." Jinny just hid behind Jo. "Jo, I thought you had twins."
Jo sat down, "Blair, there's something I have to tell you. I moved back to Peakskill to live with my dad because Rick and Eric were in an accident. They died."
"Oh Jo. And you're pregnant," Blair gave her friend a hug, "I'm so sorry, I didn't know."
"It's okay, I didn't exactly tell you. So when did Over Our Heads reopen?" Jo asked obviously trying to change the subject.
Blair got the hint, "a year ago. Andy, Mrs. Garret and Beverly Anne reopened it. How about after lunch we go see them."
"O-Okay," Jo said. She was still a little nervous. She looked down at Jinny, "lets go see them after lunch.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
As Jo pulled into Over Our Heads, she glanced back at Jinny, 'Yes,' Jo thought, 'she's fast asleep. That's a great excuse to leave early.' Jo carefully picked up Jinny, who kept sleeping, and saw Blair get out of her car.
"Awww, she fell asleep," Blair said looking at Jinny.
"Yeah, we shouldn't stay long."
"Don't worry Jo, come on." Jo followed Blair into the store, and started looking around as Blair went to the counter, where Andy was standing. "Hi Andy"
"Blair! Just a minute... Mom, Mrs. Garret come in here." Beverly Anne and Mrs. Garret came in and smiled when they saw Blair.
"Hi Blair" Mrs Garret exclaimed, when she saw Blair.
"Hey look," Andy said pointing to Jo, "it's the Jo look alike again."
"Oh Andy, that IS Jo!" Blair told them.
"Jo!!" Mrs. Garret yelled running towards her.
"Hi-ya Mrs. G, it's been a while." Jo answered hugging her the best she could with Jinny draped over her shoulder.
"Is this your daughter?"
"Yes, this is Jinny."
"Hey, Jo your pregnant."
"Yeah Andy, five months."
"Where's Rick?" Mrs. Garret asked looking around. Jo glanced at Blair, her eyes pleading.
"Um... Rick and Jo's son Eric were killed in a car crash." Blair spoke up for her friend.
Silence.
"Oh Jo, that's awful," Beverly Anne finally said.
"Jinny and Eric were really close. If one would start to cry, they both would cry. And what about this one," Jo asked putting her hand on her stomach, "he or she will never know their father or older brother." Jo could feel herself begin to cry, just as Jinny woke up.
"Mommy..."
"Hey Jinny, you awake?"
"Please don't cry mommy," Jinny said hugging her mother. Jo put Jinny down and glanced at everyone. They all looked so sympathetic.
"Jinny, this is Andy, Beverly Anne, and Mrs. G."
"Hi Jinny," Mrs. Garret said, "want a cookie?"
Jinny cautiously looked at Mrs. Garret, "Cookie?"
"Yeah, chocolate chip."
"Go on Jin," Jo told her. Jinny slowly walked over to Mrs. Garret. There was another moment of silence before Jinny came back with a cookie. Jo glanced at her watch. "Oh hey guys, we better go. Nice seeing you all again." Jo and Jinny left and everyone just stared at each other. Suddenly Blair spoke up, "Did you see Jo's eyes? They're so full of pain. And Jinny is so sweet, but those eyes... I've just had another one of my brilliant ideas. I'll give Jo a baby shower. I'll invite Tootie and Nat. That'll cheer her up for sure. We've all been apart too long."

Jinny_Extead 08-02-2001, 01:56 PM Blair went home to find Cliff watching football. "Hey Blair, how's Jo?" Cliff asked, his eyes never leaving the TV.
"Awful. Rick and her son Eric died."
Cliff looked up from the game; "Oh... she must feel terrible."
"Yeah, but I'll cheer her up." Blair picked up her phone book and dialed Natalie's number. "Hello, Natalie. This is Blair."
"Blair! It's so great to hear your voice!" The voice on the other end exclaimed.
"Yours too. But to get down to why I called, Jo's had a really rough time lately."
"What happened?"
"Rick, and her son Eric, died in a car crash."
"Oh, poor Jo."
"So, I was hoping to cheer her up by throwing her a baby shower, and it would mean so much it you were here."
"You mean, Jo's husband and son died, AND she's pregnant. Of course I'll be there, I'll try to get the first flight out."
"Great, call me when you have your flight plans then."
"Okay, bye." Blair next called Tootie, and their phone conversation was much the same. Blair hoped this would help Jo, if it didn't, Blair didn't know what she could do to help her.
The next evening Nat and Tootie arrived, and Blair picked them up at the airport. They'd be staying with her and Cliff. "So Blair, when's the shower?" Natalie asked as she stepped into Blair's car.
"Tuesday Morning." Blair replied.
"How in the world will you get her to come over?" Tootie wondered
"Well I told her on Tuesday Mrs. Garret would watch Jinny, while me and her go shopping. When she arrives... SURPRISE!!!"
"Blair, for once your idea really is brilliant!" The three girls laugh and continue on their way.
It was now Tuesday and Jo was ready to leave with Jinny.
"Come on Jin!"
"Mommy... I'm scared!"
"Don't be. You remember Mrs. G, she gave you a cookie." Jinny thought about that for a minute, and then remembered what Grandma Rose had told her about being good.
"Okay, lets go." Jo quickly glanced at herself in the mirror, and tried to make herself look presentable. Jo sighed and her and Jinny left for what was thought to be a simple shopping trip.
Jo rang the doorbell, and Jinny tightly clutched her mother's hand. "It's okay Jinny, I love you."
Cliff opened the door, "Hey Jo, long time no see, huh!"
"Yeah, nice to see you too," Jo said hugging Cliff.
"Oh, Blair and Mrs. Garret are in the kitchen."
"Thanks Cliff." Before Jo could walk through the door, Jinny tugged on her sleeve, "Up mommy."
"Oh Jin, I thought her were a big girl." Jo said as she picked up her daughter.
"Nope," was all Jinny said. Jo pushed open the door.
"SURPRISE!" Jo looked around in shock. It was a baby shower... for her. And better yet, Nat and Tootie were there.
"Jo!" Natalie exclaimed rushing over to Jo.
"Hey Nat, Tootie!"
"It's been too long Jo!" Tootie said giving her a quick hug.
"And who is this mini-Jo?" Nat asked. Jinny just buried her head in Jo's shoulder.
"This is Jinny. Jinny how old are you?" Jinny cautiously held up four fingers. "Well Jin, these are my friends, Natalie, and Tootie."
"Hi Jinny, I have a daughter Caroline, she's five." Natalie told Jinny.
Jo sort of laughed. "She's a little shy."
The room suddenly grew serious. "Jo, we're so sorry to hear about Rick and Eric." Natalie finally said.
"Yeah how are you doing?" Tootie asked
"The truth... awful." Blair spoke up, "come on this is a party!"
******WARNING THIS IS WHERE THE STORY GOES INTO SAPPY MODE******
That night, the four friends were sitting in Blair's living room. "You know I've really missed you guys." Tootie said.
"We can't grow apart again, we need each other." Jo declared
"Right, we should always be here for each other, always." Natalie added.
"Then it's a pact... friends for ever?" Blair asked.
"Yes!" Everyone agreed and they held up their glasses of a non-alcoholic beverage (Jo's pregnant... remember).
"Friends Forever!" they said clinking glasses.
"Tootie," Jo said, "Ask me how I'm going again."
"Okay. Jo how are you doing?"
"It's going to be rough, but now that I've got my family back, I'll be okay."
