View Full Version : Are you thinking about the upcoming holidays??
dylansgirl48 10-12-2007, 09:23 PM
So are you thinking or getting ready for the holidays comming up??? Like Halloween in a few weeks, Thanksgiving with the big meal and as well as Christmas....maybe even New Years?? Some people might think its too early to start to think bout it but to me its never to early for anything[except getting up in the morning sometimes  lol]! Well for me I totally am cause it's my favorite time of the year and my birthday is 6 days after Christmas...New Years Eve if you can not think of it[every one has there days lol].But what I am most excited for is spending time with family and just that time of year I guess.:) :) :)

Ireneparalegal 10-12-2007, 09:40 PM Very much so. I am already thinking if I should start ordering things online so I don't get overwhelmed.
Mikado 10-12-2007, 09:47 PM Well, Thanksgiving is already OVER, and I dont really care much one way or the other about Holloween, so that leaves Xmas and New Years...well, while I have a few gifts already bought, its a bit early for me to think about them...give me at least a month! ^_^'
dylansgirl48 10-12-2007, 10:07 PM Yes, that is a good idea to start ordering things online ahead of time so you don't get overwhelmed!!
mrs.gingerhinkley 10-13-2007, 11:01 AM It's ALL I've been thinking of!
Unfortunately... I've got dress rehearsals on Halloween!!

Ireneparalegal 10-13-2007, 11:21 PM I feel like I just put away my Christmas decorations in my storage...the thought of getting them out again just makes me wanna :faint:
catlover79 10-13-2007, 11:27 PM I'm only thinking as far ahead as Halloween right now. It will be interesting as this is the first time in 8 years that I am not working in sales (in any capacity!!). Maybe I'll get a bit of a rest - then again, maybe not.
HE Pennypacker 10-13-2007, 11:29 PM I'd be much happier if I could hibernate through the holidays like bears do.

My greatest desire, as well... The cold weather is something I'm not looking forward to. And I live in Texas.... I could certainly live with sleeping it all away... *sigh*
Nighthawk76 10-14-2007, 12:48 AM No, I haven't been giving the upcoming holidays much thought.

I'll definitely be working through the holidays. I'll work on thanksgiving as well as Christmas eve and day. Additionally, I will have a part time job in the mornings.
I've chosen this.
RoryGilmore 10-14-2007, 02:37 PM I'm thinking about it for 2 weeks off of school and mom and I are arguing about what were gonna do. She wasnts to go see my sis in law and niece in North Carolina while I wanna stay home. so I dont know how this is going to end, but I have the rest of the family on my side.
Janice 10-14-2007, 02:51 PM With my family deceased, I hate the holidays. If I could sleep from November 1st to January 2nd, I would. I have to bluff my way through it for my husband's family, and I'm quite the actress. I used to be a Christmas fanatic. I was known for that. I shopped all year, took three days to decorate my home, had Christmas carols playing nonstop. Now, Christmas songs rip my heart out.
The only way I'm thinking about the upcoming holidays is the fact that I'm dreading them, in a way that I could never put into words. I HATE the holidays. Just writing this post put a lump in my throat.

OMG Janice. I know with what you have shared with me, it is not hard to understand why you feel that way. It is so understandable. I dread the holidays merely because of the hassle sometimes, but it can never compare to what you and others who feel like you go through. I wish I could take that pain away. I wish everyone could enjoy the holidays. It seems very sad for me too at times when I think of the people in my life who have passed away and won't be here to enjoy another Christmas: my mom, my nephew, my brother, my dad and my ex-husband. I thank God for my kids, for those are who I make the holidays for. My mother so adored Christmas and went all out at that time. I try and do the same for my kids. Again, I feel for you Janice, and I never forget what you go through.

I'm so sorry Janice. :(
The Holidays are the same with me anymore. I used to love them. I used to start Christmas shopping back in August. I really used to go overboard too. I used to do all the decorating business too. It'll be 5 years this Thursday that my Mom passed away. I really dread from October until January. Not only do I have the anniversary of her death and the Holidays but her birthday is in December. She used to love this time of year. It just feels hollow anymore. The whole family feels that way I think. We have the family dinner and the opening of presents and then we go our seperate ways for the rest of the day. That's not the way it used to be ( We used to spend most of the day together) and that was only 6 years ago.Christmas can be the happiest time of the year or the saddest. The most important thing is being with family and never take them for granted.

Tough reading. I'm sorry Sonny. I have the anniversary of your Mom's passing on my calendar. All anniversaries are hard, but the milestone ones are the hardest, the 1st, 5th, etc. Your Mom was a wonderful woman. I'm glad your Dad has you and your sisters. It's true how family goes their own way now. Mothers hold the family together. My Mom's birthday is in December also, the 10th. My late sister's birthday is December 8th. It never really gets any easier, just different, I guess.

Me, too.
I haven't even decided if I'm going to decorate for Xmas yet...I normally go all out, but after my divorce this summer and living on my own for the first time (I'm 26), I just don't know why to go to all the effort...
Kinda scared, actually, to be spending the time alone for the first time....I've got nobody...

I remember you mentioning this before. I feel for ya. I feel for everyone. ;) I remember my first Christmas after my divorce, it felt weird and different, but for my sanity and my kids' sake, I had to do what I could. It wasn't as before, but it helped me to just decorate some and make it look festive. The worst thing I think is to not even have some sort of reminder that it is the holidays. My God, you step out of the house during the holidays and it is shoved in your face!  You can't forget it is the holidays.
I go to the cemetary and I even decorate my family members headstones with little things and such. It just helps me to share the holidays with them even though they are no longer here.

Glad to hear that. It helps me to deal with them no longer being here.
There are some graves where some people go to all kinds of lengths to deal with their grief. There is this one grave of a young boy and every Thanksgiving holiday and Christmas holiday, they place a plate of food on the grave. On top of all the decorations they put on that grave.

If that makes them feel better then why not, i must admit thats a tad to far, ive had people judge me for just putting the regular headstone decorations on, like some other family members have said "well they cant see it, they are not here its a waste of money" etc.. but it makes me feel better so they can take a take a hike.
dylansgirl48 10-14-2007, 08:06 PM WOW people all the stories are sad!!! I sorta understand some of them but others...well not really. My grandmother passed away 5 years ago in August 2007 and well I am sad about that but I know as soon as August and September are over I'm always happy cause I <3 the holidays and I <3 the weather too!! :-D
Tubehead 10-14-2007, 08:13 PM I can't wait unitl christmas. I already know what i want to get.
Number 9 Dream 10-14-2007, 09:25 PM I'm sorry for all of you that will not be with your loved ones during the upcoming holidays :( :bighug:
I can sort of understand in a different way, I guess. Thanksgiving and Christmas will be hard because it will be the first time my parents aren't together during the holidays. My Dad will probably get drunk and make us all upset :( I'm really not looking forward to it.
Halloween, however, is another story...bring it on! :cheer:

If it weren't for my parents, I'd have no one either. Though I could join my boyfriend's gigantic family, but it's rather overwhelming to me.
One of these years, I'll sadly have to commit myself from November to January.

dawsongirl 10-14-2007, 11:40 PM I can't even look forward to Halloween anymore. One, because my boss ruined it. Two, because at my house, we get no kids. I used to dislike handing out candy, but since working in a school, I think it might be fun, but we get no one. At my old house, we used to get lots of kids.

Last year was the first Christmas I spent on my own. Alone. I moved from home in 2005, but I would always go back for the holidays.
But because I had just started my new job, I couldn't get away. So I spent Christmas day looking after the house of a friend while he was out of town. I thought "this could be fun! I'm helping the guy out! What's more Christmasy than that?"
He made me cookies!
But he hadn't even decorated. His house was cold. Nothing felt right. I was lonely.
I guess there are several reasons why I want to fill this season with work. But I realize it won't solve anything.
As hard as this season will be for me, it will be 10 times worse on my mom. She's lost so much of the last few years. She's even lost me...
Number 9 Dream 10-15-2007, 08:34 AM It is...what's even scarier is that I'm used to it by now :(
:( That must be kind of scary.
I'll enjoy the great food and spending time with some of the relatives.

I would suggest dressing up for the kids, and who cares about your boss or others. The kids seem like they adore you, and that says a lot. Plus, kids really seem to enjoy costumes. It would be fun!

Ireneparalegal 10-22-2007, 10:09 PM Christmas is a lot of work for me because it is my daughter's birthday. I make a big Christmas dinner and have my family over, so we are celebrating two birthdays, Jesus' and my daughter's. It means double presents for her. I have to wrap some in birthday wrap, etc. I try to make it a special day for her since she never could have a "normal" birthday party like everyone else.
treky 10-23-2007, 02:31 AM my sister-in-laws b'day is December 23, and her mothers is the 22nd, so we always celebrate those on Christmas.

We've been doing a lot of things to help them, like furnish their basement and paint the baby's room. It's work but when I'm with them it doesn't seem like it. We've been having a lot of fun getting ready for the shower next month too. We are all ready for the big event!

GoldenGirlsFan92 10-24-2007, 09:23 PM I'm looking foward to Thanksgiving & Christmas. No SCHOOL! I love my holidays, presents, and family.
Yooch 10-25-2007, 12:31 AM I look forward to them (the Holidays) for the true significance behind them, but for other, more personal reasons, I dread them, and am glad when they're over.
James 10-26-2007, 02:35 AM Yes, I have; I have done a bunch of shopping (through catalogs; it beats going to the mall and having to wait in line after line after line--plus, I am terrible at wrapping presents) for Christmas, plus a few birthdays that lead up to it.
The only thing missing is the playing of Christmas carols and other songs on the radio 24/7, but I can hold it out until mid-November.
dylansgirl48 10-26-2007, 07:41 PM LOL! The Christmas carols are some of the best parts about Christmas!!

PZelda 10-28-2007, 04:28 PM My greatest desire, as well... The cold weather is something I'm not looking forward to. And I live in Texas.... I could certainly live with sleeping it all away... *sigh*
Texas and cold weather do not compute in my mind.
Now. North Dakota and cold weather. They DO compute in my mind.
You ain't seen nothing yet, buster. :p
PZelda 10-28-2007, 04:50 PM Well, the upcoming holidays. *shrug* Let me make a list, okay?
- Right before Thanksgiving will be three years since my cousin committed suicide. Thanksgiving in 2004 (which was three days after he died) was, well, nobody said anything and there wasn't much of a Thanksgiving because his funeral service was the next day. It's gotten easier with each passing year, and I'm sure most of us will be able to get together for Thanksgiving this year.
- My paternal grandpa just died on Tuesday (the 23rd). So I dunno what will happen for Thanksgiving on that side of the family... Half my paternal family live out of state, so these of us who live around here will probably get together at an uncle's house for Thanksgiving. It'll be nice, but it'll also be pretty weird without him. Some years I have Thanksgiving with my dad's family, some years I don't. Last year, I did.
- Christmas. I really have no idea about that. I never know what's going on for Christmas. Last year, I spent it with my stepfamily... This year I think I will stay in town and spend it with my mom's side. I usually do Christmas Eve with that side, and Christmas day is usually with as many of my relatives from my dad's side that live in town.
- This will be my first set of holidays where I'm truly living on my own. I've actually been living on my own since August, but the first leg of that was with my sister and so I didn't really feel like I was living on my own then. I just moved out, though, and now I REALLY am on my own (but with a roommate who is NOT related to me, lol). It's weird and scary, but I'm glad I did it.
I'm actually rather excited for Thanksgiving... They've been more fun than Christmas in the last decade for me.
TripperFan 11-13-2007, 02:09 PM I'm absolutely dreading the Holidays this year.
I had an o.k. Thanksgiving (Cdn) but it wasn't the same as usual.
Just before my favourite holiday of all (Halloween) my husband announced that he wants to split up. We've rarely fought and unfortunately he's the type of person who keeps everything bottled up. He finally just decided he doesn't want to work on any problems (which relatively are small - he's just let them all build up over the past 17 years) - just wants "to be alone". I'm absolutely heartbroken. I held off until I was in my thirties to get into a very serious relationship because I do believe in the "until death do us part" thing. He's my best friend and it's been very tough going through this when you can't even lean on your best friend for help. I couldn't face opening the door on Halloween and just left a note on the door saying I was ill and couldn't answer the door and to help yourselves to the chocolate bars. We got egged anyway. Nice.
I was already freaking out about how and where I was going to live and go with 2 dogs and 5 cats. Anyone who's known me on these boards know my pets are my life and there's no way I could give any of them up.
Then when life gets you down, sometimes there's someone there that just has to give you one more kick in the head - I lost my job for no apparent reason last Thursday. Frankly, I hated it anyway, but thought I'd look for something while I was working. Then all of a sudden I was called in, told they appreciated my efforts (and I did make an effort - I brought work home in the evenings, worked on weekends, missed a family baptism and my father-in-law's memorial service because of this dump. I blew my summer weekends and we couldn't have people over because I was working). They said it had nothing to do with performance, just that they wanted "to go in a different direction" (whatever the hell that means).
I've been suicidal off and on the past week. Through past depressions, I've had therapy to protect against that, but there are moments as I go through my things and remember the good memories and plans we had. It's just so overwhelming at times.
I can't imagine what this Christmas is going to be like. I can't even handle the displays going up and commercials on t.v.

Oh, trust me. I'm well aware of my wussiness when it comes to cold. That's why Texas is my home. ;)

Max Whittaker 11-13-2007, 02:40 PM I'm absolutely dreading the Holidays this year.
I'm so sorry! I had no idea this was going on! Just doesn't seem right...

I'm so sorry about everything. :( That's so awful. I'll pray for you and I hope things turn out alright...
