I believe Tim and Jill buy his food and stuff for him, because in a few episodes, we saw them bringing Wilson's groceries for him. It is really weird that he doesn't go out at all, though. But that's how the character was supposed to be: different.

Was his financial situation ever talked about?

In the season 6 episode "Wilson's World" he went out and bought those huge bulk items, a tv...more modern things. He must have had money coming from somewhere, but I don't think it was ever mentioned.

Maybe he's retired. And also, he doesn't need to buy new clothes, it's not like he'll grow out of them. He just washes them and wears them again!

He obviously wasn't poor. He was just an oldfashioned, odd man. Although, he had to obvisouyl go places, because we saw him in scenes outside his house many times in the later seasons. I think he was a bit too young to be retired, too.
