Patricia Heaton has discovered that Hollywood actresses and local news anchors have at least one thing in common.
“I think women feel a pressure constantly to look very, very attractive and feminine,” she said. “I get facials and other treatments to keep myself looking like the best me I can be without changing who I am. I honestly, frankly don’t think it’s a bad thing.”
Heaton plays Pittsburgh news anchor Kelly Carr on the new Fox comedy “Back to You” (Wednesday at 8 p.m. on WFXT, Ch. 25).
After years of playing middle-class, stay-at-home mom Debra Barone on the long-running “Everybody Loves Raymond,” Heaton likes glamming up as Kelly.
“I’m really making Kelly a bit of a fashion plate because I’m just so happy to be on a show where I get to wear shirts and high heels as opposed to jeans and sweater sets.”
When the mother of four boys (with husband and actor David Hunt) thought about returning to prime time, she told her agents she would only consider a sitcom.
“I’d love to do a drama at some point, but at this point in my life, it doesn’t work for me. I want to hang around with my kids while they still want to be with me.”
In the pilot, viewers learned that Kelly’s co-anchor, Chuck Darling (Kelsey Grammer), is the father of her daughter.
“Even now when I think about it, I get chills,” she said. “What’s going to happen with these characters? My God, there’s so many ways we can go. I think that it’s going to be a struggle for her because I think she is bloodthirsty as far as her career goes, but she’s torn now. And I think that’s a beautiful thing to be able to play because I believe that a lot of women who love their children and give their careers up to be home with their children still hanker to have meaning in their lives outside of their children.”
Heaton also hopes that she has found another show she can be on for nine seasons.
“I cannot believe I’ve gotten another show I think is going to be as good as ‘Raymond,’ ” she said. “I can’t believe I’m on it.”
