(Jo and Blair were driving home one day after picking up lunch for everyone. Tootie and Natalie were home studying.)
B: Jo, did you have to go and do that in front of everybody?
(As they near a stoplight, Jo turns to look at Blair. The light turns yellow.)
J: Well, it's not my fault we were kicked out! I think...
(As they continue to argue, the car starts to go off the road and speed towards the now red stoplight. Jo sighs, shakes her head, and then looks forward. They scream as they hit another car, flip twice, then roll down the embankment into a muddy field. Blair was thrown through the window, and Jo was trapped between the steering wheel and floor. Both were unconscious by the time the ambulance arrived on the scene....)
(((Jo's hospital room)))
(When Jo woke up, there were two doctors in the room checking her stats. She slowly tried to move her head, but found it was held tightly in place. Her leg was also in a cast. She moaned, and a doctor walked to her bedside.)
J: What-
Dr1: Shh, don't talk. Wait until later.
(She frowned at him.)
J: What's wrong with me?
(After saying that, she momentarily closed her eyes as a wave of nausea washed over her.)
Dr1: I told you not to talk.(He smiles.) Don't worry. Can I have your name to notify relations?
J: Jo... Jo Polniaczek.
Dr1: Ahhh...
J: P-O-L-N-I-A-C-Z-E-K.
Dr1: (He writes her name down on a clip board.) Thanks. Listen, don't try to move your head, your neck is broken.
J: I see that.
Dr1: Witty, I see. Don't be. You're lucky to be alive.
J: What? Why?
Dr1: One vertebrae higher and you would be paralized from the neck down, or worse.
J: Listen. About that other girl...
(He turns sober.)
J: What? Is she okay?
Dr1: Well, we're not sure.
J: What do you mean? Don't give me that crap! (She tries to sit up, then grimaces and leans back down.) Is she okay?
Dr1: Like I said, we're not sure. We're doing all we can, but... We'll see. I'll notify you when I get word.
J: You'll get word now because you're hauling your sorry butt down to Blair's room and getting word! (She starts breathing deeply and closes her eyes.) I was driving, so it will be my fault if she dies.
Dr1: I'll go see.
(He walks out of the room shaking his head.)
(((Blair's room)))
(Five doctors are standing around Blair's bed as the other one walks in.)
Dr1: Hey Mark, I just came from the other girl's room and she threatened me to find out how this one is, so make it good!
Dr2: We don't know.
Dr1: Quoting her, "Don't give me that crap!"
Dr2: Well, that's all we know right now.
Dr1: What's her problem?
Dr2: Major head trauma. And-
Dr3: We're losing her here!
Dr2: Sorry.
(He rushes over to her side.)
Dr2: Okay, we got flat line here! Try our basic shock.
(They give her a shock and get a very weak pulse for a few seconds, then it stops.)
Dr2: Clear!
(Shock.)
Dr1: We have a pulse! Respiratory is weak, though.
Dr2: I think we've got her. Try to get her stable, and change that IV.
Dr1: I'll go tell the other. (He leaves.)
(((Jo's room)))
(He walks in and finds Jo staring out the window.)
J: What?
Dr1: I wish I could tell you she's all right but... (He forces a smile.) She's-
J: Do you know how stupid you look when you do that? It's bad news and you know it, so tell me like it is. And if you lie, I swear that when I get out, I'll make your life a living hell. You don't know me, so don't think it's impossible.
Dr1: She almost died, and we're trying to stable her condition now, but personally, I don't think she has a good chance of living.
J: If she dies, I'm a murderer. Don't let her die. If she does... I'll... I don't care about jail, just please... Don't let her die... (She starts crying and Beverly Ann, Tootie, Natalie, and Andy walk in.)
BA: Oh my God! Jo, what happened? (To doctor.)Is she okay? We heard that Blair was in Intensive Care, so we came over here right away. What happened, exactly?
Dr1: Jo and Blair were driving, and they ran off the road. That's all we know right now.
J http://www.sitcomsonline.com/ubb/frown.gifStops crying.) I know what happened. I killed Blair.
T,N,BA,A: Blair is dead?!?
Dr1: No, she's just overreacting right now. She and Blair both suffered trauma to the head, but Blairs was much more severe. Jo here has cracked a spinal vertebrae and could have possibly been paralized.
T: Excuse me, kind sir?
Dr1: Yes?
T: You know, someone might have already told you this, but, for the record, did you know you weren't making any sense?
N: The man said she's lucky to be alive, what part of that don't you understand, Tootie? (To the doctor apoligetically.) Sorry, but Tootie is going deaf (loudly) aren't you Tootie?
T: (Frowns.) No! Are you crazy or something, Natalie?
N: See, my name is Sharon, she's getting feeble-minded in her old age, aren't you grandma?
J: (Laughingly) Ignore both of them, they both have been feeble-minded since birth. Now, when can they see Blair? At least they'll tell me the truth!
Dr1: I'll go see if she's stable yet. And, I warn you, she's not too pretty right now.
J: Oh, we're all used to that!
(The doctor walks out again, leaving everyone in there with Jo.)
(((Blair's room)))
(The doctor walks into the room, now containing only 3 doctors.)
Dr1: Mark, how is she now?
Dr2: Steve, thank the Lord, she's gonna live!
Right now she's in a guarded condition, but she's really ish on that.
(Blair stirrs.)
Dr1: Looks like she might be waking up now. We have family members wanting to see her, think it's okay?
Dr2: I don't know. Tell them to come back tomorrow.
Dr1: Okay. (he leaves)
(((Jo's room)))
(Doctor1 walks in. Tootie and Natalie are crying.)
BA: How is she? Will she live?
Dr1: Yes, she's in guarded condition. That means we'll keep her closely monitored, because right now, she's not actually dying, but almost anything could happen. When I left, she was just starting to wake up.
J: My neck is in a brace, so get me some crutches and I can see her!
(Natalie and Tootie's crying slow to a stop.)
N: When can we see her?
Dr1: I'm afraid you can't see her tonight. I'm sorry.
N: The hell you are! Why can't we see her?
T: Yeah! We came here to support Jo and Blair, so why can't we? She'll probably be scared and lonely when she wakes up, so why can't we see her? I don't care what you say, but I'm going to see her!
N: Um, Tootie?
T: Not now, Nat, I'm on a roll! And another thing-
N: Tootie!
T: What!
N: We need to be nice to the kind sir, so he'll tell us what room she's in.
T: Oops. Sorry bout that, I got carried away. No hard feelings?
Dr1: Whatever. Look, just come back tomorrow and you can see her.
J: Goodnight you guys.
N,T,BA,A: Goodnight.
N: Hey, be sure you get some sleep, okay?
J: Okay.
(They all leave, including the doctor.)
(((Blair's room)))
(Blair slowly wakes up.)
B: Wh...Wh...
Dr2: Shh...
B: (She looks at him in confusion.) What's wrong?
Dr2: You were in a wreck. You hit your head very hard.
B: Jo?
Dr2: She is fine. Get some sleep. Your friends were here earlier, and they're coming back tomorrow.
B: (Half asleep.) Okay...
(The doctor leaves ad Blair falls asleep.)
(((Jo's room 2 hours later.)))
(Rick walks in.)
J: Rick? What... Why are you here?
R: To check on you, why else?
J: Thank you.
(He walks over to her and pushes a lock of hair away from her face.)
R: Jo, I... I feel so awful...
J: Don't feel bad, Rick. It doesn't hurt anymore. It's like... like a peaceful calm. I've never felt like this before.
R: It's probrably the medicine.
J: Sit down by me. I'm glad you're here.
R: (Sits down.) Jo... Oh, thank God you're okay. (He puts a hand on her cheek and looks down at the brace.) What happened there?
J: I cracked a vertebrae. Rick, could you do something for me?
R: Anything.
J: Help me get down to Blair's room. I have to get there on my own, because they say she's in guarded condition. I don't think there are any doctors in there, though. Speaking of places you aren't supposed to be, are you supposed to be here?
R: No, but how could I stay away from you, gorgeous?
FOL is coming on, so I'll finish during a commercial.
