The Perfect Stranger
IN PEEKSKILL
By: Danielle Powell
*I tried to keep times realistic
CHAPTER 1
(((Rick's car, 4:00 PM)))
(Jo is driving Rick, Alexz, and herself to Peekskill for a reunion.)
A: Mom, do I have to be nice to this Rachel person? From the way you describe her mom, she'll be a total drip!
J: Alexz, honey. Be sensible. Not everyone grows up to be like their parents. Take me.. no... what about you?
A: Yeah, mom, am I like you?
J: Well, sorry Alexz. You're a carbon copy of me.
A: Really? How?
J: You don't want to know.
A: Yeah, I do. Come on!
J: (Smiles.) Okay. Well, you're tough when you need to be, and I used to be really tough. I lived in the Bronx, like we do now, and I ran with the gang.
A: You? You were a rebel? How cool can you get! Now that had to be more interesting than being a prep at a preppy school, huh?
J: Well, I was into learning. I got to school on scholarship and... haven't you heard this before?
R: I have!
J: Rick, why don't you tell Alexz about your life?
R: Alexz, Alexz. I play piano in foreign places.
J: Rick, really. What about when I first met you at the center-
A: A center? Were you homeless or something?
J: No, it was a recreation center. I worked there, Ri-
R: I played pool there, and Blair owned there. She made that clear to me many times.
J: Now, Rick. I'm sure she had a very good reason to... (Looks amazed.) I defended Blair from my own husband! As Nat would say, "There is a God!"
R: Now, honey, I'm sure the devil made you do it.
J: (Playfully hits Rick and laughs.) Shut up, Rick. Look, we're almost there.
A: Really? Where?
J: You see that big building up there?
(Alexz sits up in her seat and looks ahead to see a house with a sign that was painted over a long time ago: Over Our Heads.)
A: Is that all? There's only one car, an awful choice, too. Who in the h...world would get a Winnebago?
J: Beverly Ann! I guess I'm the first, then. Blair will be fashionably late, as usual. Maybe Blaine has changed her.
A: Blaine? And Blair? (Starts laughing.) That's a good one!
(Jo and Rick start laughing.)
J: She couldn't get enough of herself I guess.
(They pull into the driveway. An old lady looks out the window, sees them and starts to hurriedly walk out. Jo sees her, opens her door, and runs to her.)
J: Beverly Ann!
BA: Jo! You're early!
(They hug, and Beverly Ann has tears in her eyes.)
BA: Oh, Jo! I can't believe how much you've changed! A kid? You have a kid? What's her name?
(Alexz gets out of the car and walks up to Beverly Ann.)
A: Hey, my name is Erica Alexzandra Marie Bonner. My mom has talked a lot about you.
BA: What nice manners!
A: Don't get used to it. You're nice to me, so I'm nice to you. So you had better be nice.
J: Alexz!
A: What? You told me you used to to act like that when you were little!
J: (Laughs.) You got me there. But I didn't do that to people I first met, except for... Blair! She's here! (Suprised.) She's early! How is that possible?
(Rick walks up with all their luggage.)
R: Hey, Bev! Where do you want these?
BA: In Jo's old room. It's-
R: I know where it is.
BA: Okay. Hey! (Looks at Jo.) How does he know?
J: (Shrugs.) He must be psychic!
A: You guys had it goin' on! Before you were married! Ooooohhhhhh!
J: (Hugs her.) Mmmm. You are a mini-Tootie, you know that?
A: (Stands back and looks at Jo with a concerned look.) Is that good?
J: You decide. Her full name is Dorothy "Tootie" Ramsey.
A: (Gasps.) THE Dorothy Ramsey? You two were roomates?
J: She bunked on the bed above me when I first got there. We had a lot of good laughs up there. Hey, there's Blair.
(She runs out to the end of the driveway and waves. Blair waves back and smiles. When their car gets in the driveway, Blair jumps out and hugs Jo. They smile and hug again. Now both of them have tears in their eyes.)
J: Blair, I can't believe it's you! You look... will you kill me if I say this? You look like a normal person!
B: (Pauses and looks down a little.) That's what child birth does to you. By the way, this is Rachel.
(Rachel steps out of the car and shakes Jo's hand.)
Ra: Hi.
J: Hi, I'm Jo.
Ra: I know, my mom hasn't talked about anyone but you.
J: Oh really?
B: Well, I guess I sort of missed you.
J: Ohhh... Well, so did I... I mean, Rick is just too hard to pick a fight with. And he isn't as easy to bruise.
Ra: You hit my mother?
J: Well, I never admitted it, but I regretted it after I did it. But you had such a big black eye!
B: Oh, well. Blaine always got mad when I tried to pick a fight with him.
J: He always got mad? As in past tense?
B: Yeah, we're getting a divorce.
J: Oh, I'm sorry. I'd hoped you never had to go through one of those.
B: Well, Blaine insisted, so-
J: You mean you weren't the one that wanted one?
(Alexz walked up by Jo.) Oh, Rachel? This is Alexz.
Ra: (Holds out her hand.) I'm Rachel Stevens.
A: (Looks at her.) Alexz. (Turns to Jo and whispers.) Do you see what I mean? They're both preps! I expected more out of you're friends, mom!
Ra: (Whispers to her mom.) I don't like her. Mrs. Bonner is okay, though.
J: You know, Rachel, you look exactly like your mom when she was you're age.
Ra: (Tosses her hair.) I do?
J: (Bursts out laughing.) Have you been taking lessons from Blair?
B: Actually, she has! I gave her five bucks so she would do that.
(Blaine gets out of the car. Jo looks up, then looks back at Blair.)
J: Blaine? My Blaine, the one I dated?
(The girls excange glances. Blair saw it and laughed.)
B: She wouldn't have married him. He wasn't her type.
J: But what is he doing here? I thought you were getting a divorce?
B: Well, we are, but I... Rachel, why don't you and Alexz go inside and let Beverly Ann show you around?
Ra: Mom, are you okay? You always act this way when you talk about dad. Why can't you stay together? (She hugs her mom.)
B: I don't know, honey. I don't know. (Whispers.) I'm sorry.
Ra: (Sniffs and walks over to Alexz.) Let's go, huh?
A: Okay.
(They walk off. Jo sighs.)
J: Blair, lets go inside, okay? Blaine is in there with the kids. We have a lot of catching up to do.
B: Jo, I begged him to come. I cried and pleaded. All in front of Rachel. Do you know what he said?
J: Blair, don't. Don't do this to yourself.
B: He told me to mind my own business. Then Rachel... Rachel walked up and asked him once... once, after I had asked so many times... Of course he said yes right away.
J: Blair... Blair, don't do this. Do you want your daughter to see you like this?
B: (Starts crying.) No... No, I don't. I don't want to hurt her. Or Blaine... I love him, Jo. I still love him. But he won't let me... (Hugs Jo.)
J: Come on, stop crying. We can go to our room and talk about the good ol' days. Okay?
B: Okay.
(Blair stops crying and they walk inside.)
CHAPTER 2
(((4:15 PM)))
(As they walk in the door, Beverly Ann walks up to hug Blair.)
BA: Blair! (She sees her puffy red eyes.) Blair, are you okay?
B: Yeah, I'm fine.
BA: You look like you've been crying. Are you sure?
B: I guess I've been crying for joy.
BA: Sit down! Let's sit and talk until Tootie and Natalie get here. (Jo goes and sits on Rick's lap. Blair starts to sit down on the couch, but she sees Blaine there.)
B: I... I'll just stand.
BA: No, sit down. (She sees Blair looking uncomfortably at Blaine.) Oh... Here. (She halfway stands up.) Sit in my chair.
B: Oh, no, I'll sit on the couch. (She sits down on the opposite side of Blaine. Blaine looks at her, subtly rolls his eyes, then looks down.)
BA: So, how is your family, Jo? By the way, Alexz and Rachel are upstairs in your old room.
J: Are they getting along okay? You know, maybe we should ask them to come down here. If both of them are still alive.
B: (Stands up abruptly.) I'll go see.
BA: Okay.
(Blair goes up the stairs. When she gets to their old room, she hesitantly knocks on the door.)
B: Rachel? Alexz? Can I come in?
Ra: (Wavery voice.) Yeah.
B: (Walks in the door and notices Rachel's eyes are red.) Honey, are you okay?
Ra: Yeah, I'm fine.
A: Are you sure? I mean...
Ra: What do you want, mom?
B: Oh, just looking around. (She walks over and sits on her old bed.) Beverly Ann has kept it the same way for all these years... I have a lot of memories in here. And so does Jo.
A: She talks about you guys all the time.
B: Well, I-
J: (In the background.) Tootie! You're here! Hi, Jeff!
T: Jo! Where's Blair?
J: She went upstairs to get the kids. Sit down, I'll go get her.
B: We'd better go.
Ra: Tootie?
B: Yeah, you remember? Didn't I tell you?
A: Dorothy Ramsey! See ya!
(Alexz runs down the stairs pulling Rachel with her. Blair smiles and follows them. When Alexz and Rachel get down the stairs, they stopped dead in their tracks.)
Ra: A real movie star!
A: THE Dorothy Ramsey!
T: And who are you?
Ra: (Clears throat.) I'm Rachel Stevens.
A: And I'm Alexz Bonner. Nice to meet ya!
B: Hey, Tootie!
T: Blair! (Looks at the kids.) I'm Dorothy Ramsey, but you can call me Tootie if you want.
Ra: Tootie? We can call THE Dorothy Ramsey "Tootie"?
T: I see you've heard of me. Blair, I can tell she's yours, right?
B: (Tosses hair.) But of course! Hey, where's Jordan?
T: Oh, she's outside admiring the view. She's just like Nat, writing all the time. By the way, is Nat here yet?
B: No, she's late.
J: Hey, Rick? Do you guys want to talk in here? We can go upstairs if you want.
R: Sure, Jo. We'll tell you when Nat and Snake get here.
Ra: Snake? My mom has a friend that's married to a Snake?
B: It's his nickname... I think... Do you guys want to come upstairs with us?
A: Can we wait for Jordan?
J: Sure! We'll be upstairs in our old room, okay?
Ra: Okay.
(((Upstairs)))
(They all walk in and sit down on their old beds except for Tootie, who sat on Blair's bed.)
B: So, Tootie, I've seen some of your movies. Very good!
T: Thanks. Blair, is that your husband that plays on the St. Louis Cardinals?
J: The Cards? No way! Blair wouldn't marry those people, would you? You know how bad they beat the Yankees last time, don't you? That idiot pitcher!
B: That idiot pitcher is my husband!
J: Oh... Sorry, Blair. I didn't know.
B: (Sighs.) That's okay.
J: Well, since obviously no one's heard about me, I'm an FBI agent in the Bronx. I'm usually assigned to teen violence and gangs.
T: Aren't you scared that one day you'll find Alexz at one of those crime scenes?
J: The truth is, I have. One time, when I was working on a murder case, Alexz told me she was in a gang, and that her gang killed the kid. But she assured me that she didn't know anything about it until afterwards. Then, one day the gang caught up to her after vowing to get her back for what she did. (*See Threat To Life.)
B: (Gasps.) What happened?
J: She was shot in the stomach by their leader.
B: But how did she...
T: Live?
J: It missed her vital organs. But she hasn't been involved in gangs since! Blair, you know, I haven't heard about you in the paper each day like I used to. As a matter of fact, the last time I heard about you was your wedding! What do you do for a living?
B: Homeschool Rachel.
T: And?
B: And what? That's all Blaine will allow me to do. To tell you the truth, I'm probably poorer than you, Jo. I can't rely on my daddy's money anymore.
J: Wait a minute, what do you mean, that's all Blaine will allow you to do? You have rights, too, you know!
B: Love, honor, and obey...
T: Hey, that reminds me of a movie I directed in '93. Love, Honor, and Obey: The Last Mafia Marriage.
J: Yeah, I saw that too! That Nancy McKeon is a really good actress.
T: You know, she kind of looks like you, Jo.
J: You think?
T: Yeah! And her work in A Cry For Help: The Tracey Thurman Story was excellent!
J: Well, I've had too close of an experience to that myself to have really enjoyed it. And she looks like me, too, so I hardly even had to imagine myself there, because I already was.
B: Has Rick abused you? Say yes, and I swear that he'll never, ever do it again!
T: Jo, are you a ventriloquist? I'd swear it was you talking!
B: I'm sorry, it's just... I don't want ant of you guys getting hurt.
J: Well, we went through some tough times, and sometimes Rick... he kind of got too... he was under too much stress. It wasn't his fault.
B: Oh, Jo, I'm sorry. Looks like we all have had some bad news but Tootie. (She hugs Jo.)
N: Awww, how sweet!
BJT: Natalie!
N: What?
B: We didn't hear you!
N: That's the point of sneaking up here!
T: Nat! (Stands up and hugs her.) I've missed you! What are you doing now? Do you have any kids?
N: I've missed you too, writing novels, and yes, a 12 year old named Sara.
T: Isn't that weird? We all have girls 12 years old!
B: No, Rachel's 11. She'll be twelve the day we leave.
J: And Alexz is 13. Well, almost thirteen. Her birthday is in July.
B: She's already 13? Is that possible?
J: Think, Blair! (Pause.) Wedding night?
B: (Stifles a giggle.) Ahh... Should've known.
T: Nat, was Jordan down there with the others?
N: If Jordan recites poetry, yes. You know, Sara really likes to act! She played Baron Von Trapp in her school play...
B: Well, at least I don't have to worry about a mini-Jo running around everywhere. That would be awful! Well... It's strange. Rachel is beautiful, like I used to be, and-
N: Used to be? Blair, what happened to you?
J: (Scoffs.) Blaine happened to her, that's what.
N: What?
B: Nothing! Nat, I read your novel you wrote.
N: Who cares about my novel, what's wrong with you and Blaine?
B: Nat, please... I'll tell you all about it after this gets straightened out.
N: Okay, whatever you say.
J: Blair, if you ever have to talk to anyone about this, just tell me, okay?
B: I know. Since we're all here, let's go downstairs and introduce the men and kids.
J: You mean all the kids.
B: (Laughs.) You're right, the kids.
(They all head out the door. When they get to the top of the stairs, they see everyone is crowded around Rick on the floor. Jo hesitates at the top of the stairs. When she realizes that something bad has happened, panic fills her eyes. She runs down the stairs and kneels down by him, her hand on his cheek. Blair, Nat, and Tootie follow.)
J: Rick! Rick, wake up! (Tears stream down her cheeks, but she's not actually crying.) Please! Oh, please...
(Blair, Natalie, and Tootie run down to them and stare. Blair finally snaps to reality.)
B: I'm calling the ambulance! Try and find a pulse!
(Blair goes into the kitchen to get the phone. She calls 9-1-1.)
Bl: I found a pulse!
J: Oh, thank God!
N: What could be wrong with him?
Oper: 9-1-1, what is the nature of your emergency?
B: (Frantic.) We have a man here that just fainted, I don't know what's wrong...
Oper: Just calm down. Does he have a pulse? Ma'am, I need you to tell me, does he have a pulse?
B: Yes... Just hurry! Do you need my address?
Oper: We have it here on screen. An ambulance will be there in 6 minutes.
(She hangs up. Blair walks back into the living room to find Rick drifting in and out of consciousness in Jo's lap.)
R: Jo... My back... I can't feel...
J: What? Rick, don't talk. (Rick looses conscious.) Rick!
A: Dad, please! Dad, wake up!
B: Alexz, come here.
(Alexz looks up at Blair. Blair hugs her and turns her away.)
B: Alexz, don't look... Your father will be fine.
A: (Starts crying.) Why? What's wrong, Mrs. Stevens?
(Blair hears the ambulance sirens. She starts to walk out, then looks at Alexz.)
B: Alexz, Rachel, can you go upstairs? Just... I'll drive you over to the hospital. I think your mom wants to ride in the ambulance.
A: But I want... want to go with dad... Please?
B: Alexz, you don't want to see your dad on that stretcher. It's probably better for you to come with me. We'll be behind them the whole way, I promise.
Ra: Alexz, stay here with me.
(An ambulance crew comes in. They bring a stretcher and put him on it. Alexz sees him and turns away.)
A: (Whispers.) He looks dead!
B: Honey, don't think that way. You're only hurting yourself when you do this. Let's go.
A: What?
B: They're leaving. I promised you we'd follow them, didn't I?
Ra: Let's go!
(They all walk out behind Jo, Rick, and the AC.)
CHAPTER 3
(((The hospital, 5:40 PM)))
(Everyone is sitting outside Rick's room waiting for news from the doctor. Jo is sitting by Blair with tears running down her face, and Blair muttering encouraging words. When the doctor walks out, they all look up expectantly at him.)
Dr: Are you all family?
B: (Pause.) Practically...
Dr: Well, immediate family members can see him now.
J: (Looks at Alexz.) Do you want to come, or wait 'till the pain medicine wears off? He might not recognize you.
A: I don't care, I just want to see him.
J: (Turns to the doctor.) What's wrong with him?
Dr: He said he wants to tell you.
J: I hope he doesn't tell me like he asked me to marry him... Wait a minute, yes I do. Doctor, at least tell me what I should expect.
Dr: I don't think your girl should go in yet.
J: Is it that bad?
Dr: I'm afraid it is. I'm sorry, but it's all we could come up with.
J: Alexz? Would you?
A: Yeah. I really don't know if I'm up to seeing him yet. Tell me what's wrong with him when you get out, okay?
J: Sure. (She puts her hand on Alexz's face, then walks into the door.)
(((In Rick's room)))
J: Rick... (She looks at his frail frame under the sheet, and suddenly recalls how strong and handsome he was on their wedding day. The chapel, filled with flowers and candles... Her best friends... Seeing Rick at the end of the aisle... Their first kiss as a married couple... Their wedding night...)
R: (Moans.) Jo...
J: (Snaps back to reality.) Rick! Well, what's wrong with you? The docors said that you wanted to tell me. Is it bad?
R: Jo, come sit down over here by me.
J: (Slowly and hesitantly walks over to his bedside.) Rick, if it's bad, come right out and say it.
R: Are you sure?
J: (Breaths deeply.) I'm ready for it.
R: I have a tumor in my spine, and they're monitoring it for cancer. If it's cancerous, they say... they say I won't have long to live.
J: (Sits down suddenly on his bed, unaware of Alexz looking in the window of the soundproof door.) Are you serious?
R: Very.
(Jo has another flashback, but this time, to her suprise, it was of Blaine when she and Rick were going through a seperation. Their lips meet and... Jo kisses Rick suddenly to clear her mind. He looks suprised, but goes along with it. She slowly pulls away with a look of pain on her face, and tears in her eyes.)
J: No... It's not true... Rick, you're not going to die!
R: I hope not, but they did find some cancerous cells, enough to take the nessecary precautions. They're going to try to remove it, but they said there was a less than a 5% chance it would be sucessful. If it's not, I'll have to have chemotherapy.
J: No you won't. It'll be sucessful, I know it!
R: Jo, I want to be optimistic, but I'm afraid it's not very practical.
J: But you aren't practical! You're a joker! You'll pull through with no problem, right? Rick, promise me you'll try... (She starts crying and hugs him.)
R: Jo... Baby, I love you. I'll try for you. I'll try as hard as I can.
J: (Looks up and sniffs.) I guess I had better go tell Alexz she can come in, huh?
R: Yeah.
J: Look, I... I told her that I'd tell her what... what was wrong with you before she came in... I don't think I can. Anyway, I think you'd better tell her.
R: Okay. I'll try and let her know gently.
(Alexz sees Jo stand up and hurriedly pulls Rachel down from the door. They sit down in a chair and look as if nothing happened. Jo walks out the door.)
J: Alexz?
A: Yes? Mom, is it serious? Can I go in? Tell me what's wrong.
J: I... I think your father had better tell you.
A: But you promised!
J: Alexz, if I told you... Let your father. Please?
A: Okay. But... Could you come in with me?
J: Okay.
(They walk into his room with a somber expression on their faces. Rick slowly raises his head to look at Alexz.)
R: Alexz, come here.
A: (Walks to her dad's bed and sits down.) What? Is it bad?
R: I'm afraid so. Honey... I have a tumor. It could possibly turn into cancer, so they're operating. (Pause.)
A: I have a feeling that's not all. Tell me, dad.
R: If it does turn into cancer... I'd only have around one year to live after that.
A: (Bursts into tears.) Daddy! You can't die!
R: I'll try not to. Baby, don't cry. The surgery will remove it.
(Jo walks over to Ricks bed and hugs Alexz. She turns her head and sees Rachel and Blair looking in the window.)
B: (Mouths.) What's wrong?
J: (Mouths back.) I'll tell you later.
B: What?
J: I'll tell you later!
B: Okay.
(Blair sits down in a chair. Rachel walks over to her and asks...)
Ra: What's wrong?
B: I have no clue.
Ra: Okay.
(Rachel goes over to talk to her dad.)
Ra: Dad, can you find out what's wrong?
Bl: Sorry. No can do.
Ra: I have another question. Well, sort of. I heard mom talking one day, and she said that she still loves you, but you won't let her love you. Why not?
Bl: Did she say that? I really need to talk to her. One second, Rach, okay?
Ra: Dad, she didn't say it to my face or anything, I was just eavesdropping. She was telling Mrs. Bonner.
Bl: I know what she was doing, she was lying! Excuse me.
(He stands up and walks over to Blair.)
B: Blaine! What are you doing?
Bl: Taking you outside to talk.
B: I can't, I have to stay here with Jo.
Bl: (Grabs her arm and yanks her up.) No, you're coming with me!
N: Hey, you can't do that to Blair!
B: Natalie, leave me alone, okay? (A little quieter.) You don't want to get him mad.
Bl: Why don't you want to get me mad, huh? Because I'll do this?
(He slaps her.)
B: (Tears are rolling down her cheeks.) Not in front of Rachel, please! Take me outside!
S: He's not taking you anywhere!
Je: That's right!
B: (Whispers in shame.) Please. Let him take me out there... If you pick a fight it will be worse later...
N: No, it won't! Not if you get a restraining order!
Bl: Do you want to see what's going to happen to Blair if she doesn't keep her mouth shut?
N: No, I don't-
Bl: Then let us go outside.
(He turns around and walks out the door dragging Blair. Rachel starts crying and Tootie hugs her. Jeff starts to go out the door, but Natalie stops him.)
N: What do you think you're doing?
Je: I'm going to stop him from hurting Blair!
N: No you aren't! If you go out there, you could make it worse than it already is! Just wait until later. She might file a restraining order.
(Jo walks out the door with Alexz.)
J: Where's Blair?
Je: She's in the parking lot being abused.
J: Oh. (Pause.) What? What do you mean?!?
N: She got in a fight with Blaine. He hit her in front of everyone, even the kids.
J: Even Rachel?
Ra: Yes...
J: That jerk! I'm going out there!
T: Jo, it's too dangerous!
J: Don't forget I'm a cop! (She pulls a gun out from her purse.)
A: Mom!
J: Sorry, Alexz.
(She runs out the door.)
(((Five minutes earlier...)))
(Blaine drags Blair outside. When they get to the parking lot, he keeps a hold on her arm and slaps her again.)
B: I wouldn't care what you do to me, as long as it's not in front of Rachel. This time you've gone too far!
Bl: Why were you telling lies about me? Huh? (He twists her arm.)
B: Blaine, stop it!
(He pushes her down on the ground and kicks her hard in the stomach.)
B: Blaine...
(She starts crying as he speeds off in her car. Jo runs out the door.)
J: Blair, where are you?
(She looks around her and sees Blair curled up undar a bench holding her face. She runs over to her.)
J: Oh my God, Blair! What did he do to you?
(She looks closely at her and sees blood running through her fingertips. Blair starts crying/coughing and more blood comes out. Jo puts her hand on her mouth and backs up in shock.)
J: N... Natalie? Come out here quick!
(She kneels down by Blair and moves her hands away from her mouth. She gasps.)
J: Blair, why did you let him do this?
B: (Weakly.) I didn't... didn't mean to go this far... I'm sorry...
J: Can you tell me your liscense plate number?
B: Uh... I don't know...
J: Think! Blair, if you tell me, we can get him behind bars.
B: It's... MW...H... I can't!
J: Blair, please!
B: ...927?... I think...
J: Thank you.
B: A doctor...
J: Nat's coming. Here, let me help you up.
(She helps her up gently, and helps her sit down on a bench. Blair moans and holds her stomach.)
J: Blair? What's wrong with your stomach?
B: He kicked me...
J: Kicked you?
(Natalie walks out the door. She sees Blair and Jo and starts running out.)
N: Blair? Do you need a doctor?
B: I'm fine. Jo, help me in there.
J: Okay. (Starts to help her up.)
B: Oh, wait a minute. (She sits back down suddenly.) Nat, go... Go tell Rachel to leave the room... Please... (Starts breathing hard.) Hurry, I'm... dizzy...
J: Blair, we don't have time! We have to get you in there now, before you're stuck in the room next to Rick!
B: I'm not letting... Rachel...
J: Okay, Nat'll tell her. Don't talk anymore, okay? Concentrate on breathing.
(Nat runs into the building as Jo kneels down by Blair.)
B: (Wheezing.) Jo, I can't...
J: Just try! Try as hard as you can!
B: I... Help...
J: Don't worry, we'll get you a doctor. You'll be okay!
N: (Runs back out.) Hurry, Rachel's in Rick's room, you can go in.
(They help Blair up and go as fast as they can into the hospital. When they get inside, Tootie gasps and runs up to Blair.)
T: Blair! Oh my gosh, what happened?
J: Tootie, get a doctor!
T: Okay! (She runs to the desk.) That woman over there was abused in your parking lot and really needs help!
SEC: Name?
T: Mine, hers? WHO CARES? What's in a name, anyway? Get a doctor!
SEC: Okay, we'll be with you in a few minutes.
T: WHAT? Her husband is on the St. Louis Cardinals baseball team! Is baseball not America's favorite pastime? Is this not AMERICA?!?!?
(Everyone stares.) I rest my case.
SEC: (Picks up intercom.) Dr. Bryce, report to room... (Looks at chart.) 143.
T: Thank you!
(Rachel walks out of Rick's room.)
J: Rachel, wait!
(She sees her mom on a stretcher being taken to a room down the hall.)
Ra: (Gasps.) Mom! Did dad... I hate him!!!
B: No... Honey... Don't...
(The doctor puts an oxygen mask on her face. Rachel shakes her head in disbelief and starts crying. Her knees buckle and she collapses on the floor. Jo stops following Blair, looks back, and runs to Rachel. She kneels down by her.)
J: Honey, don't cry. Blair needs you to be strong right now. Can you be strong for her? She didn't want you to see her hurt.
Ra: But why? Why did she?
J: She did it for you. She tried to keep Blaine from messing up your family life. She loves you.
Ra: (Cries harder.) But does she... does she know I love her?
J: (A tear rolls down her cheek.) Yes, yes she knows you love her. And she'll be okay.
Ra: Promise?
J: I swear.
(They sit in the middle of the hall hugging each other. After a few minutes, Jo sniffs and stands up. She holds a hand out to Rachel.)
J: Hey, do you want to try and go see her?
Ra: Okay. Mrs. Bonner?
J: Jo.
Ra: Jo? Thanks for everything.
J: Hey, no problem. I know what you're going through.
Ra: What? (She remembers Rick.) Oh... I'm sorry.
J: It's okay. Let's go.
Ra: Okay.
(They go to Blair's room.)
(Jo and Rachel walk into Blair's room. The others are outside sitting on the chairs between rooms. Rachel looks at her mom and gasps. She has an oxygen mask on her face, and a bruised, swollen left cheek. Rachel runs over to her mom's bedside, her eyes brimming with tears.)
Ra: Mom! Why did dad do this to you?
B: I'm sorry, honey. He didn't know what he was doing, I guess. (Like an afterthought.) Or maybe he did... But we should have gotten a divorce a long time ago.
Ra: Mom, did you stay with him because of me?
B: Well, sort of.
Ra: Then it's my fault, isn't it?
B: No, don't even think like that! It was my fault, for not being a good wife.
(Jo walks up to her bed.)
J: No, he was a bad husband. Just think for a second. You never had an affair, you were a good mother, and you loved him. What more could a husband ask for? On the other hand, he worked late at night, and when you called his office, he was never there. He hasn't been around Rachel enough, from what I've heard... It's you who should be mad at him, not the other way around.
B: You know, sometimes, I feel that there is still a part of him that loves me... Jo, if this is still going on after this week, do you think Rachel and I could live with you? I don't want him hurting Rachel.
J: Rachel, do you want to come live with me for a while?
Ra: Sure! I'm never going to speak to my dad again, and that would be kind of hard if I'm living with the guy.
B: Rachel, he's still your father, no matter what.
Ra: Well, I don't want him to be! I hate him! And I never want to see him again!
J: Rachel...
Ra: What? I don't! You guys fight all the time, I know, but when I'm in bed, listening to you in the next room, all I hear is his voice yelling at you!
B: Why didn't you tell me you could hear us? We would have kept it down a little. Look, I'm sorry about this. I had hoped you didn't have to go through what I did when I was a little girl. But I think if we had gotten a divorce, that would have been better for you than all this fighting.
Ra: Why didn't you just ask me what I thought if you cared so much about me?
(Blair looks as though she's been slapped.)
Ra: Oh, mom, I'm sorry. I just need to get this anger out, and... I'm sorry.
B: I know how you feel, Rachel. I really do.
Ra: Oh, mom. (They hug, and Jo starts looking uncomfortable.)
J: (Points to the door.) I think I'll just go... (Starts to walk out the door.)
B: Jo... Jo, Jo, Jo. Don't think you're gonna get away that easy! Come here!
(Jo walks over and hugs them both. She backs up when Blair winces.)
J: What exactly is wrong with you, anyway?
B: Oh, just a few broken ribs and a bruised jaw. Um... Rachel? Could you go outside for a few seconds? I need to tell Jo something.
Ra: Okay, just don't take too long.
(She walks out the door. Jo looks at Blair.)
J: Blair, is there something else wrong with you?
B: I'm pregnant...
CHAPTER 4
(((6:15 PM)))
J: (Swallows hard.) Pregnant?
B: Yeah.
J: But... You and Blaine are having a fight... Is it...
B: No, It's Blaine's.
J: Does he know about it?
B: No, I don't want you to tell him either!
J: I won't. Blair, I-
(A nurse walks in.)
N: I'm sorry, but visiting hours are over.
B: Am I going to stay here over night?
N: I'm afraid you have to. Sorry ma'am. Excuse me, but all your friends have left. They told me to tell you that they left your car, and Rachel rode home with Natalie.
J: Thanks. Bye, Blair. And hey, take care of yourself, okay?
B: I will. Bye.
(Jo walks out the door. She goes out into the parking lot towards her car, and finds Blaine waiting there. She fumbles with her purse trying to get it open and pulls out a gun.)
J: Freeze! Or I'll shoot!
Bl: (Holds up hands.) Whoa! All I wanted to do was get a ride!
J: I thought you took Blair's.
Bl: I did, but the police caught me speeding, and I left my drivers liscense at home. They confiscated it.
J: And let you back out?
Bl: Yeah, but the idiots took our car!
J: You mean all cops in general?
Bl: Yeah!
J: I'm a cop.
Bl: I don't believe you!
J: (Pulls out her badge and sticks the gun in her back pocket.) Lieutenant Bonner.
Bl: Oh! (Looks nervous.) Um, look, I-
J: Shut up before I change my mind about that ride! I shouldn't even be talking to you at all! But, I feel sorry for you. Loosing your family like that, and Blair being pre- practically dead right now, because of you!
Bl: Why can't we be like we used to, huh? I loved you, and still do! You can dump Rick, he's gonna die anyway.
(Jo walks past him, gets in the car, and slams the door. She locks the doors and closes her eyes. Blaine looks in the window.)
Bl: Jo, I love you. Baby, please. Jo... Okay, I'll leave you alone. And, Jo? I'm sorry about... you know... Rick. You know I'd never purposely hurt you.
J: But you'd do this to Blair? Sorry, I can't believe you.
Bl: Jo, I have a problem, I-
J; Yeah, I'd say you do!
Bl: I'm going to a center in St. Louis as soon as we get home.
J: Stop saying we. You're making me feel like I'm the one that's going home with you, not Blair.
Bl: Maybe you are. Look, just give me a ride home, okay?
J: (Unlocks the door.) Get in.
Bl: Are you sure that you won't drop me off in some secluded wasteland on the way home?
J: Don't give me ideas.
(She pulls out of the parking lot and starts to head home. Halfway there, Blaine puts his head on her knee.)
Bl: Jo, do you remember the time, when we were dating, that I took you to that french restaurant?
J: ( A smile flashes across her face. She takes his hand and holds it. But then she stops smiling.) Blaine, you don't need to be reminding me of the night you proposed. I really loved you, especially since Rick and I were having problems, but that's all in the past.
Bl: But I... Okay. I just wish we could have something more than friendship, though.
J: (Loosens her grip on his hand.) I might have, but not after what happened with Blair. And what about Rick?
Bl: We can wait to see if his condition gets better. If he gets worse, I'll tell him about us and see what he thinks. If he's not, well, that's that. If he is...
J: But what about your little problem?
Bl: I told you, I'm going to a center for help. Jo, you know I'd do anything for you.
J: I wish we could just be friends.
Bl: Okay, then we'll just be friends.
J: (Her eyes brighten up.) Really?
Bl: I promise.
(She holds his hand again. He looks at her and smiles.)
Bl: I hope friends hold hands.
J: (Looks embarassed.) I... Um... How about for old time's sake?
Bl: For old time's sake. (He nods his head. They drive home the rest of the way in silence. When they get back, they walk up to the door and stop.)
Bl: So, it's back to being friends, huh?
J: Yeah, friends... Blaine, I...
(They hesitantly kiss. After a few seconds, they loosen up. When things start getting serious, Jo pulls back and runs inside. Blaine sighs, and walks in after her. He sees Tootie, Jeff, Natalie, Snake, and the girls sitting around the TV. Tootie sees him, then frowns.)
T: Don't you even have the decency to get a hotel room? And what did you do to Jo? She ran in here and went straight up to her... Where are you going?
Bl: (Halfway up the stairs.) To see Jo!
T: Why, may I ask?
Bl: I'll tell you later!
(He goes into her room and sees Jo laying face down on the bed. He walks over to her and puts his hand on her shoulder.)
B: Jo, I'm sorry. I never should have done that. (He sits down on the bed.)
J: (Almost crying.) You didn't do anything. It's just... I feel guilty about... well... loving you like this. It just happened all at once... I want to stay with Rick, but... (Hugs him) I want to be with you, too.
Bl: Jo... Why don't you wait and see how things turn out.
J: I don't want to wait. I want to be with you now.
Bl: Jo, don't cry. (He sits there stroking her hair until she stops crying.) You are with me now. And nothing can change that. Are you okay?
J: (Wipes her eyes.) Yeah.
Bl: I'd better get down there before they suspect anything..
(He starts to get up, but Jo grabs his arm and holds him to her.)
J: Just... Stay here and hold me. Just for a little while. I... I never told anyone this, but when Rick... when we first found out about Rick, that was when I first started to realize that I was... well, still in love with you. Even after all these years. But I just couldn't admit it... Until now. (They kiss. Rachel opens the door muttering under her breath, where Jo and Blaine can't hear.)
Ra: I can't believe I have to check on dad and J- Oh Dear Lord!
(She stares at them kissing, then runs out the door as she comes to her senses. When she gets downstairs, Jordan looks at her with concern.)
Jor: Rach, are you okay?
Sa: Yeah, you look scared or something.
Ra: Alexz, I need to talk to you.
A: Really? What's up?
Ra: Well... (Looks around.) Come with me to the kitchen.
(They walk into the kitchen.)
A: So, what is it?
Ra: Alexz, your mom, and my dad, are... well... upstairs on your mom's bed. Kissing. A lot.
A: What? That's ridiculous!
Ra: (Tears form in her eyes.) No, it's not.
A: (Sighs.) Look me straight in the eye and tell me the truth.
Ra: My mom... and your dad... are making out. Do you understand?
A: (Shocked.) You're telling the truth, aren't you?
Ra: Yes, I am.
A: Are you sure that they're... you know.
Ra: Yes! Come see for yourself!
(((Upstairs)))
(Jo and Blaine are still kissing. The door opens, and they look up to see Rachel and Alezx in the door. Alexz swallows deeply, then calmly walks into the room next to them, her bedroom, and shuts the door. She sits down on her bed and starts writing a letter. As she writes, she mumbles the words to herself. Tears start running down her face.)
A: Daddy, this is the hardest thing I've ever had to write. Mom and Blaine are... (She erases it.) Mom is... (She erases again.) Sorry, I just can't bring myself to tell you. It's too depressing, which is probably the worst thing for you right now. It's just not fair! Mom had no right to do that! No right! Mom doesn't know I'm telling you about the... well, I might as well come right out and say it. Mom and Blaine are having an affair. I'm sorry, but someone had to tell you, and mom sure as heck wasn't going to tell you! I can't write anymore right now. I just found out about the... you know... and my nerves are kind of frazzled. I love you daddy. Please don't leave me. You're all that I have left in the world.
(She signs her name with a flourish. She wipes her eyes, folds the note, then puts it in her pocket. Rachel then walks into the door.
Ra: Alexz?
A: Um, Rachel? Could you do me a favor?
Ra: Sure.
A: Could you go ask Natalie to drive me to the hospital?
Ra: Okay. Hey, do you mind if I go with you? I need to get away from this place. And the hospital is as far as I can get without actually running away.
A: Wait a minute, isn't your mom coming home today?
Ra: Oh, yeah! I forgot about that! I'll go ask her right now.
A: Okay, hurry!
(Rachel runs out the door, and avoids looking at her dad and Jo while they sit on the bed discussing what to do about Alexz and Rachel.)
(Alexz sits back down on the bed and looks at a picture she has of her mom and dad on their wedding day. She notices how happy they are, then a picture of Jo and Blaine on the bed flashes back into her mind. She drops the picture as she hears a knock on the door.)
A: What!
J: Al, I have to talk to you.
A: Talk away.
J: But I... I'm really sorry about what you just saw. I really don't know how to explain it, except for, "It just happened." Does that work?
A: It just happened. It just happened? (Angrily.) How can you possibly think that that could explain things? I'm sorry, but it just doesn't cut it!
J: Alexz, give me a chance!
A: What? No! Why don't you give dad a chance! Let him get better, then look at them both, face to face. It's not a fair fight when dad's in the hospital. (Gets up and opens the door to see Jo with tears running down her face, and Blaine in the background looking embarrased. She pushes past them and stands by the doorway to the stairs.A little calmer. ) Mom, all I'm asking is that you just give daddy a chance. Is that too much to ask?
(She walks out the door and goes down into the hall. Jo sits down on the bed and buries her face in her hands. Blaine puts a hand on her shoulder, but she pushes him away.)
Bl:What's wrong? So she's mad, she'll get over it! You still have me.
J: No, I never had you. It was just a little fling to express my independence. I really thought I was in love with you, but I was wrong.
(She walks out the door. Blaine follows her down the stairs, but heads out the back door. He goes around to the front of the house, gets in his car, and drives to the hospital. When he gets there, he walks up to the front desk.)
Bl: Can I borrow a piece of paper and a pen, please?
Sec: Of course. (Hands them to him. He scribbles something down on the paper and hands it to the secretary.) Could you give this to Blair Stevens when she checks out?
Sec: (Smiles a fake smile.) Of course.
(Blaine walks out the door, gets in his car, and speeds off down I-87, towards Albany.)
CHAPTER 5
(((Downstairs, 7:15 PM)))
(Rachel starts to up the stairs to tell Alexz they were going to pick Blair up, but as she starts up the stairs, she runs into Alexz. Alexz collapses on the floor crying. Rachel kneels down by her.)
Ra: Alexz, are you okay?
A: They... they...
Ra: Calm down... Do you want to come to the hospital to pick up my mom?
A: (Crying slowly stops. She reaches up and hugs Rachel.) Yes... please...
(They get up and walk out with Natalie and Sara. Tootie, Jordan, Jeff, and Snake stayed. When they get in the car, Alexz pulls out the note from her back pocket and holds it out to Rachel.)
A: Could you give this to dad? I would, but...
Ra: Okay. I will after I talk to my mom. Is this what I think it is?
A: If what you think it is is what I think you think it is, then it is what you think it is.
Ra: (Pause.) What is it?
A: A note telling dad about the... you know.
Ra: It is what I thought is is. But, well, I think your dad would take it better coming from you. He hardly knows me.
A: Well, I guess you're right. I hate doing it to him, though.
N: Do you have your seatbelts on?
A, Ra: (Buckles seatbelts.) Yes!
N: Let's go!
(No one notices a brunette walking in the direction of the hospital as they pull out of the driveway.)
Ra: Alexz, you're not doing anything to him, your mom is.
A: She's not my mom. I can't respect a woman that practically sleeps around with every old boyfriend she meets!
Ra: How do you know she slept with him? Did you see them... doing it?
A: No, but the way she acts around him... I don't know.
T: Hey, why don't you guys hold off on the accusing until you actually catch the offenders offending, okay?
A: Okay, Mrs. Ramsey.
Ra: Here, take this back. I think you'll be needing it. (Holds out the note.)
A: Thanks. (Takes the note and clutches it to her chest.)
(They get to the hospital and go in the building.)
N: Isn't Blair's room that one right there?
T: Yeah, it's the one beside Rick's.
N: I wonder if we should tell a nurse we're here?
T: I don't know.
Nu: (Walks up to them.) Can I help you?
T: We're here to check out Blair Stevens.
Nu: Okay, she's in the room to your left.
N: Thank you.
(They walk into the room and see Blair sitting on her bed looking at herself in a mirror.)
B: How did it all come down to this? (Whispers, talking to herself.) I thought he loved me. If he cared about me, he wouldn't have done this to me, would he?
Ra: (Sits down on her bed.) Mom, I have something to tell you.
B: What? (Looks mildly interested.)
Ra: Dad is having an affair with Jo.
B: What? ( Suprisedly looks up.) Is Jo... you know?
Ra: I saw them last night making out in her bed. I guess they made up after all these years, from what I've heard. That's what happens when you eavesdrop. Anyway, I really think that daddy will want to sign the divorce papers sooner than you guys planned. (Hugs Blair.) I'm sorry mom.
B: (Starts crying.) How will I live without him? I don't know if I can...
Ra: Mom, you can. I know you can.
(((Fades to Rick's room)))
(Jo walks in his room slightly out of breath. Rick slowly opens his eyes and looks up at her. He weakly smiles. Jo slowly walks over and sits on his bed. He tries to lift his hand to her face, but can't get the strength to do it. Jo's eyes tear up as he reaches almost apologetically to her hand. She holds it up to her face and kisses it.)
J: (Whispers.) I'm sorry.
(She chokes back a sob and runs out of the room.)
(((Blair's room)))
(Blair and Rachel are sitting on her bed and crying. After a while, Blair pulls back from Rachel and looks her in the eye. She wipes a tear away from Rachel's face and weakly smiles.)
B: Honey, it's okay. I'll try as hard as I can. I promise.
Ra: I'm sorry mom. Can we go home? As in St. Louis? I don't think I can stay here. Sorry Alexz, I just can't.
A: It's okay. I'm... well... I want to go home with dad as soon as he gets better. And... If he doesn't...
(Alexz runs out of the room. Rachel starts to go after her, but Blair holds her back. Natalie enters the room.)
B: Let her go, Rachel. I think that she needs to be alone right now.
N: What's up with her?
B: Well, it's...
(((The hall)))
(Alexz runs out the door and collapses in a chair sobbing. She looks around for the nearest thing to throw, but, upon finding nothing but chairs, she stands up and starts kicking them and turning them over. After a few chairs were demolished, she looks at what she did, closes her eyes, and just stands there for a few minutes. She semi-calmly stands the chairs upright and walks into her dad's room.)
A: Daddy? Are you awake?
R: Alexz... Come here.
A: What is it? (Walks over to his bed.)
R: They... They found some cancerous cells. I'm having my operation Thursday.
A: What? Why aren't they doing it right away?
R: I don't know, honey. I just don't know.
A: Dad, I have something to tell you.
R: I know, honey.
A: No, you don't! Read this.
R: I already know about your mom and Blaine.
(Jo quietly walks into the room, but pauses by the door as she hears them talking.)
A: You do? But... How?
R: Your mom came in here and told me.
A: She told you?
R: Yes, and I forgive her.
A: How can you forgive her for something like this?
R: I promised her I would always love and honor her when we got married. I can't go back on that.
A: But... She promised too, you know! In sickness and in health! Well, you're sick, so where is she now? Huh?
(Jo puts a hand on her shoulder. Alexz jumps.)
J: Al, I'm right here. And that's where I'm going to stay... If you'll let me.
A: (Coldly.) I don't want to be anywhere near you. Get out!
J: Alexz, let me explain-
A: No! I don't want to talk to you or ever see you again!
J: Alexz, can we do this outside? Let your dad have some peace and quiet for once.
A: (Looks sympathetically at her dad.) Okay. (They walk out the room. Alexz folds her arms against her chest and faces her mom.) Explain before I walk out.
J: Look, Alexz, I never meant to hurt you. I just... Have you ever wanted something really bad, so bad it hurts... (Quietly.) And then... When you get it, you find out that... You never really wanted it, it was just the challenge. That's the only reason that I ever liked Rachel's dad. I just... I couldn't stay away... It's like... You know when you were in the gang, how you didn't like the violence, you were just in it because you liked the danger and challenge? That's what it was like with Blaine and me. I didn't like him, just... the danger and challenge of having an affair. I know I hurt you, Blair, and yes, even Blaine.
A: (Angrily.) Then why did you do it? I thought I knew you, mom. The old you could have stood up to the challenge! You were the strongest woman I knew!
(Ashamedly.) Key word is "were".
J: Honey, there's no way to make you understand but what I just said. If you don't believe me... Tell me what you want to do now. Go home? I can let you go stay with your grandma if you want.
A: I'm staying here with dad.
J: Well... Okay. I'm going to-
A: (Very angrily, with stress on the word Jo.) You know, Jo, I don't give a d*mn what you think!
J: Alexzandra Marie Bonner, watch your mouth! You may not want to be related to me, but I sure as heck still want to be your mother! You are a part of me, and nothing can change that! I... I love you.
A: (Coldly.) Well, I don't love you. (Starts to walk out the hospital door, but turns around.) Oh, do me a favor. Get the hell out of my life.
(Alexz walks out of the hospital. Jo suddenly sits down in a chair, her face pale. Natalie and Blair walk out of her room, slowly but surely, with Blair wincing. They see Jo, and sit down next to her.)
B: Jo, what's wrong? You don't look so good. In fact, you look like you're about to faint. Is something else wrong with Rick?
J: N... No, he's having his operation Thursday. But...
N: What?
J: Blair, I need to tell you something. The reason I'm telling you this is because I want a clean slate... Okay... (Breaths deeply.) I was having an affair with Blaine, but we broke it off today... (Jo thinks about how solid her marriage is with Rick, and wants Blair's to be the same with Blaine.) Well, really, he broke it off. He said it wasn't right to do that. Can you ever forgive us?
B: (Offhanded and carefree.) I know. Rachel told me all about it. Now, you want to know if I can forgive and forget, right? (In a sinister manner.) Of course I can. I'll forgive him... and forget you. I don't know how I ever even got involved with you. How could you do this to Rick? And me? Did you plan this? I mean, isn't this a coincidence that both of us were in the hospital when your love flared again? So you decided to pass the time together, am I right? Then, you suddenly began a passionate relationship with each other without letting the "broken parts" know? And don't try to tell me "it just happened!"
(Jo gasps as she recalls where she has heard those words before.)
(((Flashback)))
A: What!
J: Al, I have to talk to you.
A: Talk away.
J: But I... I'm really sorry about what you just saw. I really don't know how to explain it, except for, "It just happened." Does that work?
A: It just happened. It just happened?
(((Fades back to present)))
(Jo notices Blair staring expectantly at her, waiting for a comeback.)
J: I... I... I'm sorry!
(She runs out of the hospital, following the same path as Alexz just a few minutes before. As she exits the hospital, she notices Alexz sitting down and crying on the bench where she found Blair curled up after Blaine abused her. She slowly walks over to her daughter.)
J: I'm leaving, so do you want a ride?
A: Can't you take a hint and get out of my life?
J: Okay, I will! I guess just trying to be friendly around here is a crime! I guess I'll see if I can catch that 4:30 bus to New York.
A: (Looks confused.) Why?
J: If you don't want me here, I'll leave! There's no use staying around here when I can be saving peoples lives in the Bronx!
A: Uhh.... Okay, see you soon, I guess.
J: Bye!
(She starts walking towards the bus depot on the other side of the street, but Alexz jumps up and stops her.)
A: Why don't you take your car?
J: I walked here.
A: Ohhh... Aren't you going to stay and see how dad's operation works out?
J: I'll write, since apparently you're staying here during the duration of your father's hospital visit.
A: Okay.
(Jo starts walking again, with her fingers crossed. Alexz runs towards her again and puts a hand on her shoulder.)
A: Can't you please stay until Thursday? I want you to be here, and since dad forgives you... I guess I can too.
(They hug and walk back into the building.)
CHAPTER 6
(((8:20 PM)))
(Blair and Natalie are sitting down discussing what had just gone on with Jo.)
B: That's not like her at all! Of course, having an affair with her best friend's husband isn't like her either.
N: What if she was trying to cover up for Blaine when she said that HE stopped them? I bet she knew it was wrong all along, and was forced into this unlawful activity.
B: (Raises eyebrows.) Okay... I need to go get Rachel. Where is she, by the way?
N: We left her in the room, remember? She said she needed some time alone.
B: Oh, okay. Let me go get her.
N: I will. You need to rest for a while.
B: I'm perfectly all right! Well, except for this pain in my stomach.
N: Pain? Did you tell the doctors about it?
B: No, it's not much. It's sort of like that time when I was having problems with Rachel, only I'm not... pregnant...
N: Well, I still think that you should tell the doctor about it.
B: (Smiles.) Oh, let's not worry them about that. I'm sure you're making a big deal out of nothing.
N: Okay... But be careful. You need to take it easy for a few days. I'm gonna go get Rachel so we can leave. Alexz can leave with Jo.
B: Okay. (Natalie goes into Blair's old room. Blair slowly leans back against the seat and grimaces as a searing pain shoots through her abdomen. Jo and Alexz walk in and see Blair, then hurry over to her seat.)
J: Blair, are you okay?
B: Jo... You know what I told you earlier, about me being...
J: (Suprisedly.) Yeah.
B: It hurts...
A: Do you want me to get a doctor?
J: Yeah, and hurry!
B: Please!
A: I'll try!
(Alexz runs off in search of a doctor. Jo sits down beside Blair and puts a hand on her shoulder.)
J: Do you think that it's-
B: Why are you here?
J: I was here to apologize to you!
B: Well, I don't accept it. I don't think I can forgive what you did.
J: Why do you have to be so stubborn? I told Rick all about it and he has forgiven me! Why can't you?
B: Rick was probably delirious from medication!
J: Why don't you believe me? Why is it so hard to believe that I made a mistake and that I'm ready to take responsibility for it? (Blair grimaces again as Natalie and Rachel come walking back the same time that Alexz comes back with a doctor. Rachel runs up to her mom.)
Ra: Mom, are you okay?
B: Nat, I think it's a miscarriage.
N: A what?!? But you aren't pregnant, are you?
Ra: Mom, you're... pregnant?
B: Yes!
A: (Gasps.) But...
Dr: What exactly is wrong here?
B: I think I'm having a miscarriage! It hurt's really bad...
Dr: We need to get you into the emergency room. (Gets a wheelchair that is up against the wall.) This is all we have.
B: Whatever you have to do, just help me!
Dr: Shall I notify your husband?
B: No! I mean... No, I don't think so.
(He helps her into the wheelchair and starts wheeling her away. Jo, Nat, Rachel, and Alexz follow in silence. When they get to the ER, the doctor mumbles doctor gibberish to the secretary. He then takes her into a room, leaving everyone out in the waiting room. Rachel sits down heavily. Jo, Nat, and Alexz sit down beside her.)
Ra: How could this happen if mom and dad were fighting? Mom wouldn't...
J: No, she didn't.
Ra: How do you know? I thought she was mad at you! I'm not. I can understand the way you feel. Once I cheated on my boyfriend-
A: (Annoyed.) Rachel, this isn't the time!
J: She told me, before she knew about Blaine and me. It was right after Blaine had abused her. I wish that she had told the doctors sooner about that little detail.
N: I tried to tell her to tell them, but did she listen? Noooooo!
J: Natalie!
Ra: What if something is wrong with the baby? I've heard of people having miscarriages and dying from them!
J: Rachel, she won't die. I lived with your mom for eight years, and I really know for a fact that when Blair Warner wants something, she gets it. And I know that she wants to stay alive.
A: But does she want the baby?
J: I don't know. But even if she wants it... I really don't think that it will live. If I guesstimated correctly, she should be around four and a half months right now.
Ra: But I couldn't tell she was pregnant.
J: I didn't show with Alexz until I was five and a half months.
A: Mom!
J: Sorry.
(Rachel looks down and a tear rolls down her cheek. Jo puts a hand on her shoulder.)
J: Listen, I know she's gonna be okay, but are you? I mean, with your parents fighting all the time, and now this.
Ra: I'm fine. I mean, hey! Look at all the people around me. Compared to everyone else, I have it great!
J: Sometimes watching bad things happen to loved ones is worse than actually having it happen to you. (Jo's eyes tear up, and she stands up.) I'm going to walk home now. Nat, call me if anything happens.
N: Why don't you ride home with us?
J: I'd better not. With the luck I've been having lately, we'll have a wreck and blow up! Bye, Alexz.
A: Bye, mom. (Jo leaves the building. Alexz looks up at Natalie.) Listen, I'm not that good at that psychiatry stuff, so... Is my mom okay?
N: I don't know, Alexz. All we can do is pray.
Ra: Pray? (Pause.) My mom never... never taught me how...
A: All you do is ask Jesus... humbly ask Jesus for what you want. Only the important stuff, though. But, to do that, he has to be part of your life, too. You have to want him to be part of your life.
Ra: What do you mean?
(Natalie silently sits and listens to Alexz and Rachel, amazed at Rachel's ignorance, but also at Alexz's knowledge.)
A: Rachel, do you know what it is to be saved?
Ra: If you're talking about what you do to money, yes.
A: No, not that. I'm talking about when you give your life fully to Jesus.
Ra: No, not really.
A: Rachel, listen to this. Tell me what you think about it, it's from the Bible. "For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believes in him shall not parish but have everlasting life. John 3:16"
Ra: I think it's awfully unselfish of him!
A: No, seriously, what do you think?
Ra: I think... I don't really know what I think. Alexz, could you pray for me and my mom? And... and my dad, too.
A: (Puts her hand on Rachel's shoulder.) Sure. (Looks over at Nat.) Mrs. Robinson?
N: Oh, huh?
A: Are you still awake? You haven't said anything.
N: Sorry. Hey, why don't we go find out what room your mom's in, Rachel?
Ra: Okay.
(They go to find out where Blair's room is.)
CHAPTER 7
(((8:50 PM)))
(Jo runs out of the building with tears running down her face. She gets into her car and drives back to the house. When she gets there, she stands outside the door, hesitating to open it. She finally does, and walks in to see Snake and Jeff asleep on the couch, and Tootie watching tv.)
T: Hi, Jo! Where's Nat and everyone else?
J: They... Umm... Look, I'm really tired. I think I'll go to bed.
T: Why did it take you so long to get back with Blair?
J: Look, I don't want to talk about it, okay?
T: Jo! (Stands up.) I'm not letting you up there until you tell me. Did Blaine find her again?
J: No, I got rid of him.
T: (Looks suprised.) What?
J: No, I didn't kill him.
T: (Looks relived.) Good. Well, what are you talking about?
J: Well... You had better sit down, it's a long story. (They sit down between Snake and Jeff. Jo tells the whole story, with Tootie's eyes growing wider with the passing of minutes.) So, I came here. I didn't know what to do! I used to like Blaine, but not now. And I feel awful for doing this to Rick. He said he forgives me, but... I don't think he meant it with his heart.
T: Don't worry, Jo. I can see both of your points of view, and I know he means it. Blair, on the other hand... It'll take you a while to get through to her.
J: But... Do you think I can get through to her? I mean, her best friend was dating her abusive husband, and all the while, she was pregnant with his child! If I was her, I wouldn't be that quick to forgive myself.
T: Don't worry, Jo. You've been friends for so long that one little... well, big thing couldn't mess that up. You know, I might want to go see Blair before visiting hours are over. Want to come with me?
J: (Shakes her head.) I-
T: Maybe you can get through to her there.
J: Okay. I guess it couldn't hurt to try.
T: Okay. I don't think Jordan will wake up before I get back.
(They leave and get into Tootie's car.)
(((The hospital)))
(Jo and Tootie walk up to the desk.)
J: Um... Can we see Blair Stevens yet?
SEC: (Looks at chart.) I'm sorry, you can't. But you can wait outside her room, it's 391, third floor.
T: Thank you.
(They get in the elevator and go up to the third floor. When they get there, they find Nat, Alexz, and Rachel sitting in chairs beside her room. They walk over and sit down beside them.)
J: Rach, look, I'm sorry for what happened earlier.
Ra: (Reaches over and hugs Jo, tears forming in her eyes.) I just want my mom to be okay.
J: Yeah, me too. Listen, how about you all go home and wait for some news about Blair, okay? I need to talk to Rick about something. Besides... (Looks at watch.) It's already 9:10.
N: Okay. Come on, let's go.
Ra: Bye, Mrs. Bonner.
A: Bye, mom.
(They walk off. Jo stands up and walks towards Rick's room. She slowly goes into his room. As she walks in, he looks up slowly and smiles. His eyes, usually full of life and cheerfulness, are flooded with unshed tears of pain as the tumor relentlessly presses against his spine. She sits down in a chair beside him.)
J: (Sympathetically smiles.) Rick, how are you?
R: I've been better.
J: (Puts her hand on his cheek, and kisses him lightly on the lips.) Is there anything I can do?
R: Jo, all you can do for me is assure me that you're happy.
J: Rick, I... We need to talk.
R: Okay, talk.
J: I... Rick, I feel awful about what I did to you and Blair. And yes, Blaine too. I know you said you forgave me, but I have to be sure. Blair... She doesn't forgive me. I don't think she ever will.
R: Jo, I never was mad at you. If you hadn't have told me I might have been, but you came right out and told me, ready to face the consequences. I admire that in you. I love you.
J: Oh, Rick, thank you! (She hugs him gently, afraid of hurting him.) I really hope you get better. (She stands up and looks at her watch.) I think I might be able to see Blair now.
R: Blair? Isn't she home now?
J: She had a miscarriage.
R: (Pause.) Oh... okay...
J: (Looks at the door, then back at him.) Are you sure you don't want me to spend the night here or something? I don't need to see Blair today, I can see her tomorrow.
R: Go check on Blair, I don't mind.
J: (Kisses his forehead.) Thanks. (She leaves his room. When she gets in the hall, she looks at her watch again.) 9:20 already? I'd better hurry. (She quickly walks to Blair's room. She started to open the door, when a doctor walks by.)
J: Excuse me? (The doctor keeps walking.) Hey!
Dr: (Stops and turns around.) I'm sorry, do you want something?
J: Yeah, I want to know if I can see Blair Stevens yet.
Dr: Oh, sure, go in. (She starts to go in, but he grabs her shoulder.) But don't be loud, she could be asleep.
J: Okay. (She walks into Blair's room. She sees Blair almost asleep, but not quite. Jo walks over and sits beside her in a chair.) Blair?
B: (Pauses, then speaks quietly.) Jo, why do you keep coming back? Why are you wasting your time on me?
J: Blair, I'm not going to give up. We've been friends for too long.
B: You're right.
J: But- (Pause.) What?
B: You're right. I should have forgiven you a long time ago.
J: What made you change your mind about forgiving me?
B: Nat said... Once Nat told me that she thought Blaine made you...
J: No, he didn't.
B: (Suprised.) He didn't?
J: No, I knew what I was doing. But I wasn't thinking. After Alexz and Rachel found us... that was too much for me. I told him I couldn't do that anymore, and came here to apologize to you and Rick.
B: And I didn't beleive you, did I? (Jo just looks at Blair, slightly shaking her head.) I'm sorry. I... Jo, the baby didn't make it, did it?
J: I don't think so. Blair, I'm sorry.
B: It's okay. Jo, can you go ask them when I can check out?
J: Okay. (Jo gets up and leaves. She goes up to the receptionist's desk.) Excuse me, can you tell me when Blair Warn- umm... Blair Stevens can be checked out?
Sec: Of course. (She types some things in on the computer.) Mrs. Stevens can leave tomorrow, depending on her condition. Oh, someone left this for her. (Hands her a note.)
J: Thank you, I guess. (Walks back into Blair's room.) Blair, you can leave in tomorrow. I guess they want to keep you for observation or something. Oh, someone left something for you. (Hands her the note. Blair unfolds the note and reads it. Her eyes fill with tears, then shoves the note at Jo.)
B: Jo, burn this.
J: What?
B: Burn it!
J: What does it say?
B: Read it, I don't care! (She closes her eyes, shakes her head, then looks back up at Jo.) Just get rid of it any way you can.
J: Okay. I'm going to read it though, okay?
B: Fine.
J: (Opens the note and reads it quietly.)
You'll always be my angel,
even though we're not a pair.
You'll always be my sweety,
in my heart I'll always care.
You'll always be my angel,
even though our love has died.
You'll always be my sweety,
in my heart I'll always cry.
You'll always be my angel,
even though we lost each other.
You'll always be my sweety,
in my heart we're always lovers.
You'll always be my angel,
even though we're not together.
You'll always be my sweety,
in my heart and always forever.
Blair, I still wish we could have worked it out. But it was impossible. I'll agree to give Rachel to you, as long as you forgive me. I know I hurt you, both mentally and physically, and for that I'm sorry. But I couldn't control myself, just like I can't control where our relationship will go. My lawyer will meet with yours to designate a court date for the trial.
Blaine Stevens II
B: Jo, please throw it away.
J: Okay, I will. Look, it's almost 9 o'clock, so I had better go.
B: Okay. Bye, Jo.
J: Bye. (Jo leaves.)
CHAPTER 8
(((9:55)))
(Jo enters the house to find everyone in bed. She sits down on the couch quietly, trying not to disturb anyone. She switches on the tv on and turns the volume down, hoping it will take her mind off Blair, Rick, and, although she wouldn't even admit it in her mind, Blaine.)
Tv: Richard, I love you. I want to be your- (Channel change.) Perfect Omlet! Only $19.95, plus- (Channel change.) Square Pegs, Square Pegs, Square- (Channel change.) beef patties, special sauce- (She turns off the tv.)
J: (Puts her head in her hands and starts crying. All the emotions that she's kept bottled up inside of her for the day finally come pouring out. She cries for a few minutes, when she feels a hand on her shoulder. She looks up and sees Alexz sitting beside her. She quickly wipes her eyes and struggles to lessen the flow of tears.) What are you doing up?
A: It's only ten o'clock.
J: I thought you were asleep.
A: Well, I was up in bed, but I couldn't sleep. I heard you crying so I came down here. Did you just get back from the hospital?
J: A few minutes ago.
A: Did you talk to dad?
J: Yeah.
A: So, what did you talk about?
J: Oh, not much. I just asked him if he forgave me, and he did. You know, your dad is a really understanding guy.
A: I know. Did you get to talk to Blair?
J: Yeah. Hey, look at this. I have to throw this away. What do you think? (Shows her the note. Alexz reads it and looks up at her mother.)
A: Did he really leave this?
J: Yeah. I really wish Blair didn't have to read this. She's not in really good condition right now.
A: Did the baby...
J: No. It was too young to live.
A: I feel sorry for her. I wish that she could have kept it.
J: You know, she might not have even wanted the baby. If you think about it, why would she want a reminder of her abusive husband? He just picked up and left her when she needed him most! I wish that guy would have just stayed out of both of our lives, it would have been so much easier.
A: But then she wouldn't have had Rachel, would she?
J: Well, yeah, you have a point. But couldn't he have stuck around to find out about her pregnancy? I think she should have left him. (Pause.) Al, what time is it?
A: (Looks at clock.) It's 10:05.
J: We'd better go to bed. Tomorrow we have to pick up Blair, and your dad is getting his operation.
A: Oh yeah, I forgot it was tomorrow. We're leaving Friday, aren't we?
J: Yeah. Well, goodnight, Alexz.
A: 'Night, mom. (They both walk up the stairs and go to bed.)
(((The next morning, 8:00 AM)))
(Natalie and Snake's alarm clock goes off. All the adults reluctantly get up, at their own pace, to get ready, and the kids don't move, except Alexz, who wasn't asleep anyway. She walks around trying in vain to wake the others up. Finally, Sara and Jordan wake up, half asleep and rubbing their eyes, and go into the bathroom. Rachel still won't move. Alexz kneels down beside her bed.)
A: (Yells.) Rachel, the house is on fire! (Rachel doesn't move.) Your clothes are burning up!
Ra: (Sits up quickly.) Where!
A: Get up, Rachel.
Ra: You.... You... Turn Blue!
A: Hah, is that all you can come up with?
N: (Walks in.) Truce! Mini-Jo, Mini-Blair, cut it out! (Does her hands like a referee.) We need to get to the hospital.
Ra: How long do I have to get ready?
N: An hour.
Ra: (Sighs like Blair.) An... hour? It takes that long to do my hair alone! What am I going to do?
A: Cool it, Farrah!
Ra: Easy for you to say, Mrs. Goodwrench, you don't even brush your hair, do you? (Sweetly.) Or do you carry a portable rake? (They keep arguing.)
N: Whoa, hold it, time out, Tootie! Help!
T: (Walks in.) What? Whoa, we have Warzone 2001 in here, don't we? Nat, leave it to a pro. (Walks over beside them and clears throat.) Excuse me, you guys? (Keep arguing.) Hello? Jo, come in here!
N: Ooh, nice one!
T: You never tought of it, did you?
J: (Walks in and sees them arguing.) Hey, cool it! (Keep arguing.) Hey! (They stop and look at her.) Alexz, go get dressed. Rachel, go... do whatever you do. We're leaving in an hour no matter what.
Ra: Yes, ma'am.
A: Sure thing, mom.
(They go get ready.)
(((8:59 AM)))
A: Rachel, are you ready yet?
Ra: (Peeks out from the bathroom door with curlers in her hair.) Just a minute!
(((9:15 AM)))
A: Rachel!
Ra: Almost!
(((9:30 AM)))
A: Get out here before I knock the door down! Everybody else is outside in their cars!
Ra: (Whining.) But my hair's flat! I can't be seen before any respectable person like this! (Looks out the door.)
A: (Sarcastically.) Oh, thanks! Now will ya get out here!
Ra: Okay, okay! I'm hurrying as fast as I can!
A: Oh, no, take your time!
Ra: Really? Thanks! I always said you can't rush beauty!
A: And how many months premature were you, Rachel?
Ra: (Scoffs.) For your information, I was a day late!
A: Like we'll be if you don't hurry!
(((9:35)))
Ra: There, I'm presentable! Not nearly my best, but-
A: (Grabs Rachel's arm.) Let's go!
(They leave for the hospital.)
(((The hospital)))
(They all walk into the hospital and go to the door beside Blair's room except for Jo, who walks up to the receptionist's desk.)
Sec: Can I help you?
J: Uh, yeah, can you tell me if Blair Stevens can be checked out?
Sec: (Types in something.) Sure. Are you going to?
J: Yeah, I think so. (Starts to walk off, then turns around.) When is Rick Bonner going into surgery?
Sec: (Types in more things.) He's in there right now.
J: When will it be over?
Sec: In 30 minutes.
J: Oh... Okay, thank you. (She walks off towards Blair's room.) She can leave now.
T: Good.
Ra: Are we taking her home now?
J: Yeah. (They walk in. Blair is sitting on her bed with a suitcase of things Tootie had brought for her.)
B: The doctors told me I could leave, so I packed.
J: Yeah, well, how are you feeling?
B: Oh, I'm pretty good.
Ra: Mom, are we going home tomorrow like we planned?
B: I think we had better, in case your father has some news.
Ra: Where is he, anyway?
A: He-
B: He went home for now.
Ra: Mom, where is he? Really?
B: (Swallows.) He left.
Ra: Oh, okay.
B: (Pauses.) Aren't you upset?
Ra: I would be, but... Not after what he did to you. I don't think I can forgive him for that.
J: (Edgey.) Well, can we talk about this at home?
N: Jo, what's with you? You've been like this ever since we got here! I thought you were over your fear of hospitals!
J: I... Rick is in surgery right now.
N: Oh...
T: I'm sorry, Jo.
J: It's okay. Look, can we just leave?
A: Mom, I'm not leaving. I want to see how dad's surgery turns out.
J: Alexz, I-
A: No! You might be able to leave him, but I can't.
J: (Sighs.) You guys, it looks like we're staying. Bye, Blair. See you guys back at the house.
Everybody: Bye.
(They all leave but Jo and Alexz, who go upstairs to Rick's room. When they get there, they see doctors coming out of his room.)
J: Alexz, go sit down. (Alexz sits down, and Jo walks up to the doctors.) Excuse me, but that's my husband in there. How is he?
Dr: Well, he looks pretty good!
J: Have you removed the tumor?
Dr: Well, we did as good as we could, and... (Looks at the doctor beside him.) We think that the tumor is gone.
J: (Turns around to face Alexz, and hugs her.) He's gonna be okay. (Faces the doctor again.) When can he be checked out?
Dr: Tomorrow if everything goes as planned.
J: Thank you. Really, I mean it.
A: Mom, can we go now? Hospitals give me the creeps!
J: Okay. (They leave.)
(((The house)))
(They walk in and find everyone bustling around, getting things packed. They all stop when Jo and Alexz walk into the door.)
Je: So, how did it go?
S: Yeah, is Rick okay?
J: (Smiles her "Jo" smile.) Yeah, the doctors think he's gonna be okay.
Sa, Jor: That's great!
N: Yeah, congradulations!
J: Hey, it's not like he's pregnant or anything!
T: Jo, your husband has been on the brink of death and beyond! He has faced-
J: Hey, I never said I wasn't happy, just that... Okay, I'm really happy!
B: Well, so are we!
J: Look, we should probably be packing, not standing around talking!
(Everybody goes around packing their stuff for the rest of the day.)
(((The hospital the next day)))
(Jo and Alexz walk in to Rick's room.)
J: Rick? You awake?
R: Hey, Jo!
A: Hi daddy.
R: Alexz! How have you been doing?
A: (Smiles and runs up to him. He hugs her with all his might.) Great, dad. Just great!
J: So, are you ready to check out?
R: Yeah, but the doctors said I have to be careful, because they let me out earlier than they usualy do.
J: Oh, we'll take good care of you!
(They get all his stuff and leave.)
(((The house)))
(Alexz, Jo, and Rick walk in. Everyone walks up to Rick and says hi, how are you, and all that other good stuff.)
B: Well... I'm all packed. I'd better get going.
J: Already?
B: Well, I don't drive as fast as Blaine does, so it will probably take me an hour longer.
Ra: We have to go?
A: Already?
B: Sorry it wasn't all you probably expected from the reunion, Rach.
Ra: That's okay.
B: So... I guess we had better go...
A: Wait, I need to talk to Rachel.
J: Okay, but hurry.
(Alexz pulls Rachel over to the kitchen.)
A: I have an idea.
Ra: What?
A: Why don't you try to talk your mom into letting you go to Eastland? My mom said she'll let me!
Ra: Umm... Okay, I guess I could give it a try!
A: Good. Maybe Mrs. Morgan and Mrs. Robinson will let Sara and Jordan go, too!
Ra: Okay, let's give it a shot!
(They walk back into the living room.)
Ra: Mom... You know you're the best mom in the-
B: What do you want?
Ra: (Quickly.) Can I go to Eastland and Sara and Jordan too? Alexz is going, so why can't I? Please???
B: Umm... I guess!
Ra: But mom, I... Really?
B: Sure, why not!
Ra: Great!
Sa: What about us?
Jor: Mom, please???
T: Nat, whaddya think?
N: Snake?
S: Jeff?
Je: Tootie?
T: Sure!
Je: Sure!
S: Sure!
N: Sure!
T: Sure- Hey!
(Everyone laughs.)
A: So... See you all next year!
J: Eastland's majestic halls...
Sa: All together again...
Ra: Wait a minute, isn't Eastland an all girls school?
All: Rachel!
(Credits roll as they all hug.)
THE END
I'm sorry if the ending is a little rushed, but I wanted to end the story.
