Will Smith's son Jaden Christopher Syre has reportedly been lined up to star in a remake of hit 1980s movie The Karate Kid.

The nine-year-old, who appeared alongside his father in The Pursuit of Happyness, will play the lead character Daniel Larusso, made famous by actor Ralph Macchio.

Sony Pictures has been in talks to make a modern version of the film, but it has not been indicated who would take the role of Mr Miyagi, played by the late Pat Morita.

Bosses have ruled out bringing back Macchio to the role of Larusso because they deem him too old to play the teenage martial artist.

The Karate Kid II was the highest grossing film in the trilogy, making £56 million at the box office in 1986.

one question i'd like to ask is WHY? this is an 80s type of film and thus, i very much doubt a lot of people, particuarly kids today would watch it. the first one was passable enough but the follow-ups were awful and so corny. and who could forget the diabolical 'the next karate kid' which debuted the two-time oscar winner hilary swank?

So i guess they're going to move the setting from High School to grade school.

I can't wait to ignore this movie in the "new releases" aisle at Blockbuster Video.

BAD IDEA! Man this is really gonna ruin the Karate Kid movies! Jayden shouldn't do this he did a really good job in the Pursuit of Happyness.

As long as they don't remake 'Rebel Without a Cause', 'The Breakfast Club', or 'Valley of the Dolls' then i'm fine.;)

I'm pretty sure it was the sequel after Sharon Tate was murdered in real life.

But my goodness, if they remake it today, please keep Paris from f***ing it up!

what is it with the hollywood film industry these days? either a) they have run out of decent ideas or b) they are just too darn lazy to come up with original, well scripted and well acted films

Jaden was good in The Pursuit Of Happyness, but come on, he's too young.

Whatever happened to Will's other son, the one who was in his "Just The Two Of Us" video years ago? He'd be a better candidate for the role I think since he must be 15-16 now.

So, um.... Could we just pretend that this is not happening? Maybe if we stick our heads in the sand it'll go away....

Or we could always riot.

I don't care either way. But do something...

Not only that, but the target audience would probably be younger as well. Hollywood needs to stop remaking classics and get original. The Karate Kid wasn't good after Part 1 to me, so to remake something over 20 years that had mediocre sequals don't make sense. If that's the case, then it's time to remake the Police Academy movies.

I've seen "Pursuit of Happiness"... Smith's son doesn't look like a Larusso.
