View Full Version : Lucille Ball in Life Magazine...
Ireneparalegal 09-21-2007, 09:38 PM Actually, I am referring to a large, hardcover book of Life Magazine. I remember back in high school while spending time in the library, I came across this large, hardcover book with the word LIFE on the cover. Obviously it was some special edition from LIFE Magazine. I can't for the life of me remember what the book was abt, but it had many pics in it from various television and movies all the way to the early 70's. Anyhoo, I recall this one page that featured a large pic of Lucy and it had a small article talking abt how Lucille Ball's individual features (her nose, her lips, her eyebrows, all her facial features) were simply PERFECT. I found that so interesting because as I looked at the large pic, I couldn't help but agree with the article. Lucy did have this perfect mouth. Her lips are so delicate and seem so perfect. Her nose is simply a nose I would die for, her eyes are so beautiful and they are spaced apart so nicely. Overall, adding those perfect features on that one face made one hell of a beautiful lady.
Would anyone happen to know of this special edition Life book?

Thanks for mentioning this. I hope someone can shed some light...
Madame X 09-22-2007, 06:49 PM I checked out our library, and no luck. Of course in a town of 6000, what could I expect! I will do my best to find this photo; we all would love to see it.
Ireneparalegal 09-22-2007, 07:23 PM When I seen the book, I was in high school, this was in 1980-81. I cannot even recall what year the book was published. I just remember it had the name LIFE on the cover and it was a very huge book. I remember different pics that were featured throughout the book such as movie stills, but that is all I can remember. I just have that Lucy page stuck in my mind and never forgot that part of the book.
As for the photo, it was a large, close-up photo of Lucy, it looked like one of the photos she may have used to autograph for fans, a studio head shot of some sort. I just know it was in color and it was so beautiful.
Madame X 09-22-2007, 11:00 PM It's not this one, is it?

Ireneparalegal 09-23-2007, 12:04 AM No sweetie.
Boy, she sure is young there and those photos are colored. Usually I see photos of Lucy at a young age in black and white. Very beautiful she was.
NOVARick 09-23-2007, 04:12 AM Are you sure the picture you're thinking of was actually on the cover? I know of only two times she was on the cover of that magazine. One was in 1953 with Desi and the kids, and the other is this one from 1962:

It sounds like the picture you're talking about is the Technicolor Tessie photo Madame X provided. I've included a better copy of it here. I remember a book from the early '80s that included this photo, and the caption talked about some sort of contest from the '40s to determine the most perfect face for technicolor movies, and Lucy was chosen and given the name Technicolor Tessie. And this photo was used to illustrate. This kind of sounds like what you're talking about.

The other magazine covers I've attached here are this early one from 1940 showing her beautiful profile:
129983
This one from 1938, which may be her earliest magazine cover:
129984
And this one I really like from 1942 with Desi:

coffield3 09-23-2007, 06:57 AM Those pictures are awesome!:D
Lodee 09-23-2007, 09:59 AM Wow, thanks for posting those. A lot of them (well, most actually) I've never even seen.
Madame X 09-23-2007, 11:23 AM Thanks for those pictures, Rick. Lucy really has a different look when she didn't wear those dark, heavy false eyelashes (the Radio News one).
The one Irene is looking for was not on the cover. It sounds like it was in a special hardcover collection of photographs of famous people.
Ireneparalegal 09-23-2007, 02:21 PM Yes, Stacy is right. It was a special hardcover book published by LIFE. It was one of those coffee table type books. I never said Lucy was on the cover, but there was a small article inside abt the facial features of Lucy.
And thanx to Tara aka Hollywood Rock Chick, she just gave me information regarding the book!!!! It is a rare, hard-to-find book. Thanx Tara for finding this for me. I didn't even think of checking out e-bay.

Mikado 09-23-2007, 02:58 PM Going to BUY it Irene? And man, those early pics are interesting!...show me MORE!!! :D
Mikado 09-23-2007, 03:01 PM that "Technicolour pic" is interesting...I knew Lucy had her hair coloured blonde for a time, but, I never saw it before! ( Doesnt really suit her, does it? ) I suppose because at the time, Hollywood wanted nothing BUT blondes; fortunately, Lucy discovered Henna Rinse, and the rest is history!

Wow , nice pics, TY :)
Its a bit jarring to see the "Queen of comedy" in a bunch of "Glamour" shots, but, theres no doubt that she had that "model aura" about her; especially the first pic, in the green dress.......STUNNING!!!!!!

I agree, it is a bit jarring, especially if you go back and watch some of her movies from that era, like "Two Smart People," where the characters she played were all about beauty and glamour and poise. The juxtaposition between those glamourous characters she played then and the image we all have in our heads of the wailing Lucy Ricardo, it's almost impossible to reconcile the two. It's hard to imagine it's the same person. People talk about Madonna reinventing herself, well Lucy REALLY reinvented herself. It's very rare for an actress known for her beauty to ever go beyond that and do the kind of unglamourous comedy Lucy did. But Lucy took a HUGE leap from there, allowed herself to make all those goofy expressions, have pies thrown in her face, cover her face with chocolate and pizza dough, do pratfalls and fall on her face. What an amazing transformation!

I guess that describes the genius that was Lucy, in one fell swoop! :)

Very well said. I couldn't even add to what you posted here.
Lucy was a genius and she wasn't afraid to show us at her "worst". Even at her worst, she was still gorgeous. I love her early day glamour shots. Her hard work and perserverence paid off.

Although the book has only one page devoted to Lucy, just the fact that book remains in my memory after 20+ years tell me that is how much of an impact it made on me. I am a devoted Lucy fan til the day I die. :D
NOVARick 09-23-2007, 06:50 PM Here are some more. Besides being a movie glamour queen, as the previous photos illustrate, she was also a popular pin-up model during World War II.

Thanks for that. I think it's interesting how nowadays (and forever more) Lucille Ball will be associated almost entirely with comedy. But think about her early fans who knew her first as a glamorous and sexy movie star. Watching the movie "Best Foot Forward," in which Lucy plays Lucille Ball, and you get a good idea of the image of Lucille Ball at that time (as a sexy movie actress, not a comedienne). Only occasionally, in films like "The Fuller Brush Girl" and "Miss Grant Takes Richmond" did people see something else. So they must have been stunned when "I Love Lucy" hit the scene and saw this new Lucy.

*ClassicPinUp* 09-23-2007, 08:20 PM Gorgeous woman! Even in black and white those eyes are something! I do like her better without the false lashes.. she had a natural beauty and didn't need all that stuff. (although I know at the time those were the "in" thing.)
NOVARick 09-23-2007, 08:43 PM Well darn, these images are too big to post here!
I had to compress these pictures to get them to fit. Here goes. I hope they look okay.

Congrats Irene! :)
comedyfreak 09-24-2007, 03:55 AM She was one beautiful lady. If you get the chance check out Lucy in Adventures of Annabell and Annabell Takes A Tour. They're from the 30's and you could see that Lucy had the flair for comedy. I have almost all of ther movies, she could really act.

I'm looking forward to hearing all about it when you actually get it in your hands. I remember some book from around the same time that had a couple pages on Lucy and mentioned how she became Technicolor Tessie. Could it be the same one?
coffield3 09-24-2007, 07:34 AM Gorgeous women! those pictures are beautifull!! :)
Madame X 09-24-2007, 12:29 PM Irene-I'm glad you found the book! Is it the 1975 version?
Rick-Thanks for the great pictures. That frizzy-styled hairdo she wore on ILL didn't do her justice. With her flowing, darker hair she was perfectly gorgeous! :)

You're welcome. As for her hairstyle (and clothing) on ILL, my guess is that she was trying her best to look like a typical 1950s housewife, which was quite a feat for someone with her beauty. If she looked like she did in those photographs, she would not have been very believable as a housewife. And many of the plots on the show simply would not have worked, like the scene in "The Diet" where Lucy goes to audition for Ricky's show and those women are insulting her looks: "I've known Ricky Ricardo for a long time, and you're not his type."
batcat24 09-25-2007, 02:25 PM She was in alot of magazines.:D

Well, I just got the book and it is the book I remember from high school. I evidently remembered things that were not even in the book. The one page featuring Lucy has a colored close-up of her eyes and her mouth. And it says this:
LIFE loved Lucy back in 1943. Miss Ball's coloring was so perfect that experts called her "Technicolor Tessie," as Walt Sanders proved with just her eyes and mouth.
You then have two large close-ups pics of those features. Extremely CLOSE-UP!:D

Irene-Could you please clarify which pictures you are speaking of? Are they among the pix Rick posted?
Ireneparalegal 09-26-2007, 03:55 PM Well, it is really hard for me to say whether any of the pics Rick posted are used in this book. I mean, the pics of her eyes and mouth ARE REAL CLOSE-UP...I will try and scan the pics (the book is HUGE) and see if I can post them here.

That sounds like the book I remember! I can't remember where I saw it, but it seems like it was around the late '70s/early '80s. I had totally forgotten about it, though, until you brought it up. I guess that memory was stuck somewhere in the back of my mind.
Ireneparalegal 09-26-2007, 07:37 PM Ok, I am having a bit of a time scanning the pics, the book is so huge and it doesn't rest very well on the scanner (doesn't lay flat enough)...I will try again though.
