View Full Version : Celebrity references
Bill S. 09-18-2007, 10:40 PM I'm trying to compile a list of celebrities that were referenced or paid homage to on the show. Here's what I have so far, just from off the top of my head:
Perry Como ("Catch A Star")
Charlie Chan ("TV Or Not TV," "Better Living Through TV," I know there's others...)
Laurel & Hardy ("Songs & Witty Sayings," "Head Of The House," "Unconventional Behavior")
The Marx Brothers ("Catch A Star")
Elvis Presley ("Catch A Star")
The Three Stooges ("One Big Happy Family")
There were obviously many others, so feel free to add on. I know Ed Sullivan & Red Skelton were mentioned before, but I can't think of the episodes...Jack Benny was in "Principle Of The Thing," and the Dorsey Brothers were in "New Years Eve Party," but I'm not sure if they were ever mentioned otherwise.
*ClassicPinUp* 09-19-2007, 06:06 AM Humphrey Bogart but I can't seem to remember the name of the episode. I know Alice says "You're no Humphrey Bogart yourself" and Ralph replies with
"No but she is!" Ohhhh it's that one when Alice sets up a date for that man and that huge blonde woman comes over...darn I can't remember the name of it lol.
Can't forget Marilyn Monroe! ;) (again forgetting the episode) Alice was talking about men wanting nice, wholesome girls and Ralph snaps back with something about that's why men bought (some number) of Marilyn Monroe calendars. He also mentions her in the maid episode when he's trying to "butter up" Alice.
Ronald Reagan; I know they mention him in the episode where they've come back from the movies and are trying to figure out some girls name. I remember Norton hanging out the window trying to read the names but someone’s long underwear is blocking that particular name. (it actually may have been the same episode that Ralph says the Marilyn Monroe on the calendar line but I'm not sure)
Lana Turner; Norton mentions her
Clark Gable; The mambo episode where Norton says "before I started eating Trixie's cooking I was a regular Clark Gable."
I know I'm terrible! I can remember the names, the lines and the situations but I've totally forgotten the names of the episodes :(.
Frank Gannucci 09-19-2007, 05:18 PM "Humphrey Bogart but I can't seem to remember the name of the episode. I know Alice says "You're no Humphrey Bogart yourself" and Ralph replies with

That episode was entitled: "Alice Plays Cupid."
"Can't forget Marilyn Monroe! Episode: "Glow Worm Cleaning Powder." Ralph also says: "Why did men buy 3000 Marylin Monroe Calendars last year."
"Ronald Reagan; I know they mention him in the episode where they've come back from the movies and are trying to figure out some girls name. I remember Norton hanging out the window trying to read the names but someone’s long underwear is blocking that particular name. (it actually may have been the same episode that Ralph says the Marilyn Monroe on the calendar line but I'm not sure)."
That was the episode entitled: "Waht's The Name/What's Her Name." Interestingly, Ed & Ralph mispronounce his name as Ronald REEGAN."
"Lana Turner; Norton mentions her."
Also from the same episode as above.
"Clark Gable; The mambo episode where Norton says "before I started eating Trixie's cooking I was a regular Clark Gable.""
"Mama Loves Mambo."
Bill S. 09-20-2007, 06:49 PM Thanks guys! So that's:
Humphrey Bogart ("Alice Plays Cupid")
Marilyn Monroe ("A Woman's Work Is Never Done" & "Glow Worm Cleaning")
Ronald Reagan ("What's Her Name" & "What's The Name")
Lana Turner ("What's Her Name" & "What's The Name")
Clark Gable ("Mama Loves Mambo")
And here's a few more I thought of:
Bela Lugosi ("Brother-In-Law")
Ricardo Cortez ("My Fair Landlord")
Liberace ("TV Or Not TV")
If you think of any others, be sure to post them!
A celebrity reference of the future was in one of the Color Honeymooners episodes, I.I.N.M., in "Nephew of the Bride." At one point Ralph mentioned Telly Savalas. This was six years before Mr. Savalas became "Kojak."
Can't forget this double-reference as spoken by Ralph, from "Here Comes the Bride":
"Boris Karloff seems like a nice guy when he's dancing on The Red Skelton Show too, you know. You ever see him in Frankenstein? That's the real Karloff."
And in "On Stage," Ralph brought up the names of Gregory Peck and Kirk Douglas.
And probably confined to the L.A. area in prominence and popularity, but I suppose the reference to Spade Cooley in "Oh, My Aching Back" would count as well.
*ClassicPinUp* 10-13-2007, 12:01 PM I thought it would be interesting to put some faces to these names, so here's some pictures I found (feel free to add on if you'd like)...

*ClassicPinUp* 10-22-2007, 08:44 AM I don't know as much about Marilyn Monroe as you seem to, but didn't she accidentally overdose on sleeping pills? If it's a long story, PM me...either way, you've sparked my interest.
Nope it was another case of "the rich and powerful get away with everything." I will PM you though since it's a long one lol.
*ClassicPinUp* 10-22-2007, 08:52 AM  I don't know who the other lady was, but I can see why!
I think I know who that is.. Lauren Bacall and Humphrey Bogart?!?! She has that scary Lauren Bacall look to her and after looking at some other pictures it does seem to be her.
Those are some great pictures, I don't think I've seen any of them except for the last one. Whenever I hear Marilyn Monroe mentioned at the same time as The Honeymooners, I always think of that story Audrey told in her book, about helping Marilyn with a splinter (I think)...
Omg, I loved that story! I can only imagine Audrey's face when MM walked into the bathroom and said "the men were trying to lift me onto the pool table and I seem to have gotten a splinter in my @ss." :brent:

Oh, it was Bogie and Bacall all right . . .
