I really liked Papillon. It's not the type of movie I usually watch, but it held my attention for the entire 2 1/2 hours! It doesn't hurt that my man Gregory Sierra (:eyes:) has a small but highly visible role in the film as well. I just bawled at The Green Mile. Michael Clarke Duncan was phenomenal.

Thank you for reminding me of American History X. I too love that movie.
I agree Midnight Express is indeed a powerful movie. Although they didn't stick with too many facts (I read the book) it still remains one of my all-time favorite movies EVER. I can see it over and over. I never get tired of that movie. Brad Davis gave an extraordinary performance and should have received the Academy Award for that performance.

Mean Dog Blues is another one of my choices. Any movie that displays Gregory Sierra in nothing but a pair of black briefs (in the, ahem, "examination" scene) is OK in my book. :eyes:  :faint:

This is VERY disturbing for me to admit, but I love anything that has to do with prison. I can't understand it for the life of me, because no way would I ever want to be a resident of one, nor would I ever want to visit a modern day prison. I've just always found them fascinating. When my husband and I went to San Francisco a few years ago, my favorite attraction was Alcatraz. My husband hated it, and a lot of people were saying that it should be torn down and turned into a wildlife sanctuary. As an animal lover, I am all for that, but I can't imagine Alcatraz being gone like that. I thought it was a really cool place! I visited one in Fremantle, Australia (near Perth), that was awesome as well.

Anyway, my FAVORITE prison movie is The Shawshank Redemption. Absolutely brilliant film. LOVE both Morgan Freeman and Tim Robbins.
Others are:
Birdman of Alcatraz and Dead Man Walking.
I thought I would hate Dead Man Walking but I watched it with my husband. He's the one who wanted to see it. Here's the REALLY scary part: At the beginning it shows what Sean Penn did to the girl and the whole movie is about his being on Death Row. I would never, ever condone what he did. Killing someone is absolutely horrible-especially the way it was done in this movie. But Sean must have a very powerful effect on me, because toward the end (I won't give away the ending, but I'm sure it's not real hard to guess what happens), I was actually feeling SORRY for him! Isn't that horrible? Now THAT'S good acting!
I'd love to see Jailhouse Rock, though. It used to be available on Netflix for instant viewing but now you have to rent it. Jailhouse Rock is my very favorite Elvis song!
Incidentally, one of my favorite episodes of Monk is when he pretends to be a prisoner to catch someone who killed a guy on death row, hours before he was scheduled to die anyway. That episode was hilarious!
BTW, if you want to read a light-hearted book (actually two) about prison life, there are some wonderful kids books out.
Al Capone Does my Shirts and Al Capone Shines my Shoes-both by Gennifer Choldenko. The Shoes book just came out, so I haven't read it, but I LOVED the Shirts book. It's about this boy who lives with his family in the housing for families who work on Alcatraz. I think his dad is the warden and he has a sister who has a mental disability and he's trying to get her into a special schoo. GREAT book! Hey, I'm 42 years old and I loved it!
Thanks for all the great movie suggestions! I'll check those out!
