View Full Version : Finally, I found the ratings for Checking In, I'm the King of TV Research-LOL
TVFactFan 09-12-2007, 06:04 PM It took 6 years but I was patient and I was able to see how the show was cancelled. The Final Rankings for the Spinoff-"Checking In" during the 1980-81-TV season was #40
That was a lot higher than I thought but I guess since the show was only on for 4 weeks CBS had to pull the plug.
Information was from the Book-"Blacks and White TV, by J. Fred Macdonald, 1983
hcollinsmith72 09-13-2007, 09:33 AM That show was not that good, Marla Gibbs was not the Florence we loved on the Jeffersons. And I'm sure that had a big effect.

But I think we were supposed to see a different florence, that was the purpose of her having her own show

it's about time - I was getting worried-LOL
40th is still pretty bad. No wonder it was cancelled at the end of the season. Since it was a midseason show, it would have had to be at least in the top 30for it to come back.
I remember watching it back then, and honestly, the show just was not that good. The characters were bad, the writing sucked, and Florence was not the same at all, which is probably why people hated it so much. The first episode aired (I don't even think it was the pilot) was about the hotel being haunted or something like that, which I think was a dumb way to open the series in the first place. I doubt we'll ever see the show on DVD, but if we do, I'd buy, just out of curiosity.

Someone in your house should have HIT the record button so I can see Checking In one day-lol
Also viewers were supposed to see a different side of Florence, that was the purpose of the spinoff to see a side of her we never saw before

I agree. I think we were supposed to see at least a different side to her. With George, she was one way and away from George, she would behave in a different manner.
Also, I am surprised it ranked #40 and it was pulled. Look at how many shows are lower than #40 on the Nielsens and yet, remain on television. Remember two weeks ago Solomon you posted ratings from the 70's and there were shows that were ranked real bad but we know they remained on the air for a long time.

But keep in mind the show came out the gate at #40, a lot of the shows that was in the 40's in the list I posted was in the top 15 or 20 at some point and fell to the 40's.

Oh I see, it started out low. Ok that explains it. thanx.

And a Top five Show in the Summer-lol Rank #5,
Pavan 09-13-2007, 08:14 PM Again, it is not how a show is ranked in the ratings that causes cancelation (unless it is #90, lol). It is how much it loses from its lead-in. I'm not sure what show was the lead-in for Checking In, but I can guarantee you Checking In must have lost more than half of that audience. It could have been a top 20 show and still would have gotten canceled, or moved, if it was losing 1/2 the audience from its lead-in.
Scoobiedoo30 09-13-2007, 08:22 PM thank's for exampling it to us

Checking in was the lead in show on Thursdays

So it lead off the night at 8PM? Stupid move by CBS to lead off the night with an untested spin-off. Whatever aired at 8:30pm must have did tons better.

Park place aired afterwards and it was cancelled too. Yup Checking In led off the night on thursdays and instead of airing after the Jeffersons on Sundays.
JulieSomoski 09-14-2007, 04:01 PM What they should have done was air it after The Jeffersons, since there were only 4 episodes to air. Then, it could have easily taken the lead in and came back for a full season. So, it really was a dumb move by CBS. They must have had a lot of faith in the show to have it leading off.
I still think the only reason viewers liked Florence was because of her back and forth quarreling with George. Taht's what viewers liked to see her doing, which is why most people did not like her in Checking in.

Checking In couldn't compete with Mork and Mindy on Thursdays
JulieSomoski 09-14-2007, 11:17 PM Checking In couldn't compete with Mork and Mindy on Thursdays
But Mork and Mindy was already losing it's audience by that season . . . if viewers liked the show, they would have tuned in, which they didn't.
Brian Damage 09-14-2007, 11:31 PM Checking in was the lead in show on Thursdays
Stupid, simply stupid, it should have been paired with the Jeffersons for at least a year.
Mr. Television 09-14-2007, 11:32 PM Checking In couldn't compete with Mork and Mindy on Thursdays
Do you know what show it was paired with? Never mind, it was Park Place. I think I saw the first episodes of both shows but I never watched again.

Hence, a 4 week cancellation.

Which makes the cancellation more understandable because Checking couldn't compete with a DYING SHOW-lol

Oh I forgot about that. I was only 13 at the time I believe, but I still remember tuning in. It was just around that time I really got into The Jeffersons, too.
