Just curious...

Where did Mrs. McGillicuddy stay while in Hollywood?

How come in Hollywood Carolyn Applebee can't see a thing without her glasses, but we never saw her with them before?

Mrs. McGillicuddy was probably sharing the second bedroom with Little Ricky since she was watching after him. Perhaps Caroline Appleby normally wore contacts. Back in those days, they only had those expensive hard lenses that no one could afford to lose. So it might not have been a good idea to travel with them. Glasses would have been much easier.

Not only that, but what did Mrs. McG. do WHILE IN HOLLYWOOD? Ok, she was taking care of Little Ricky, but where did they go when they weren't in the hotel room? She and Little Ricky must have spent a lot of time at the park, shopping and doing a lot of sightseeing.

They never mentioned another bedroom. There was the ep. where Lucy slept on the couch waiting for Ricky. He came and went and the maid came in to clean up. She went in to the bedroom and left, suggesting that was the only room to clean besides the main room.

Where was Mrs. McG. during all of the adventures? Poor Little Ricky. He had to hang with an old bat while his parents ignored him.

I want to know who paid for the Mertzes hotel while they were in Hollywood. Considering Fred wouldn't even pay for his own train ticket home, not to mention not even willing to chip in for gas on the car ride over

It is implied that the Mertzes' room was covered by MGM, as long as Ricky was working at MGM. When Ricky was done with the movie and Lucy and the Mertzes didn't want to leave yet, Ricky said he couldn't afford to stay because HE was now paying for the expenses, not the studio. That is when he agreed they could stay one more week so the three of them could go souvenir hunting.

As for Little Ricky, we never saw another bedroom, but there is a second door we see to the right of their bedroom (a view from the living room). In the episode where Lucy dances with the dummy that looks like Ricky, we see Lucy run into that room when she hears Little Ricky cry. At that point, as she runs in, Ricky comes out of THEIR bedroom, thus the reason why Lucy didn't see Ricky knock the dummy out of the chair and he sat there instead.

They did show a second bedroom. It's to the right of Lucy and Ricky's bedroom. The door to this bedroom is to the left of the living room window, and to the right of the door to Lucy and Ricky's bedroom. In "The Hedda Hopper Story," the first time we see Mrs. McGillicuddy in California, she comes out of this bedroom, obviously having been in there with Little Ricky. Then we see Lucy go in there and come out with Little Ricky. In the shot where Lucy comes out of there, you can see a dresser and mirror, indicating this is a bedroom. Later in the episode, Mrs. McGillicuddy and Hedda Hopper come out of this same room and Hedda Hopper is commenting on what a beautiful grandson she has.

When you check this out, see if you can figure out the dimensions of this room. From what I can tell, it seems to be impossibly narrow and small because you can see a wall to the immediate left side of the door. And obviously the wall on the right side can't be too far over because the balcony is not too far to the right of the bedroom door. And based on the balcony shots, the back wall of the bedroom would only be a few feet back from the bedroom entrance. So it seems like Mrs. McGillicuddy would have to sleep standing up, holding Little Ricky. Am I wrong?

It looks like the dimensions of that room changed during their stay in Hollywood. In the Hedda Hopper episode, you only see a back wall with a dresser and lamp, no wall is visible to the left. In fact, it appears the room may extend off to the left. In "Lucy and the Dummy" you see a different wall, which starts at the left side of the door and angles out around it. In this case, it doesn't appear the room could extend to the left. There also appears to be a Ricky caricature on the wall in this episode, and there is no longer a dresser and lamp in the background. When Lucy comes out of the room, it almost looks like she is coming from the balcony. Kind of like Fred in the Madame X episode when he runs off to the left down the hallway in a direction that would appear to be (based on the position of the living room window) off the ledge.

Let me add, when was Ricky ever working on Don Juan? I know the fab four were in Hollywood at least 3 months, so I guess we have to assume that Ricky was filming the movie in between episodes? Usually actors filming a movie, especially where they are the star, they are on the set early in the morning and remain on the set for approximately 12 hours, give or take. I remember reading a book where Joan Crawford was filming a movie and she was on the set at 4 a.m. and left the set around 8 p.m. only to return and do this on a daily basis for several weeks.

Ricky did publicity shots, did publicity promos such as opening a car-wash, judging a beauty contest, opening a car dealership, etc. Remember when Lucy mentioned all that when she was dissappointed at the lackluster way he was being used to promote his career? Ricky also went deep-sea fishing, he did a show where Lucy was the bull, he and Lucy celebrated their wedding anniversary, Ricky spent time with Colonel Wilde playing cards upstairs, Ricky spent the day with Richard Widmark, he and Fred spent the weekend in Palm Springs, etc. When did he have time to make a movie? No wonder Don Juan was shelved. But even later on the movie must have been made because they had the premiere in New York after the fab four return.

That's a good question. And remember before they even left for California it was mentioned that they would only be in Hollywood for something like three weeks? And the whole time they were there, as you note, it seemed like Ricky was spending most of his time doing publicity or partying. Perhaps we should assume that no scenes for Don Juan ever got shot, then after the project got shelved and the studio decided to put him in another movie, they had to extend his time in Hollywood. So maybe that movie (whatever it was) was filmed sometime between "The Tour" and "Lucy Visits Grauman's." In other words, during I LOVE LUCY'S the summer hiatus. :)

Wow, Mrs. McGillicuddy was quite the trooper! LOL! Even though 50 years ago they didn't know that people would be watching these episodes enough to pick up details like that, you would still think they'd think about things like that.

You know what episode always confused me? The one where they were supposed to pick her up at the airport and they get into the discussion about the time zones.

Also, let me clarify they were in Hollywood for 3 months. That is why they had all that stuff on the apartment steps when they were going to try and put it all in the car trunk.
It was the European trip where they were going to spend only 3 weeks.

Lodee, don't feel bad, I too still get confused abt the time zones scene where Mrs. McG. is to be picked up at the airport.

And guess what? Ricky was wrong when he corrected Mrs. McGillicuddy about the flight time. He told her she should have added three hours. Actually, we subtract three hours when speaking of the time difference between travelling from the east coast to the west coast! ;)

Thanx again for that screen cap! Great work. That room wasn't a room. It was a closet and they mistook it for a room. Poor Little Ricky.

Colonel Wilde's upstairs suite was no suite at all when you compare it to the Ricardos...and Colonel was already a star.

BTW, what is the dialogue for the scene regarding the time difference? I don't know it word for word, for the simple fact it is a very confusing dialogue that to this day I can't figure out.

Thanks for that! And about that time difference thing, I agree with you. I had an online discussion about this years ago and we also concluded that Mrs. McGillicuddy and Ethel were correct and Ricky was wrong.

Getting back to Mrs Mcgullicuddy. I got the impression that she was just coming in to Hollywood. The episode mentioned they are to pick her up at the airport. From the packing the car" Gettin ready" episode she mentioned she will fly out with Little Ricky. I thought she would be out there days earliler than the car travelers. It appears she waited a quite before she arrived. Also I just assumed she had a room of her own in the hotel with her daughter and son in law "Mickey Richardson."

She didn't want to spend three weeks traveling by car. So it was agreed she would fly out later with Little Ricky AFTER the fab four was already established in Hollywood.

Yeah that makes sense. She probably wouldn;t have hung around 3 weeks waiting for the car travelers. She probably called Lucy to see if they arrived and booked the flight. I do agreed if that was Little Rickys room it was a slim thin room.

BTW, what is the dialogue for the scene regarding the time difference? I don't know it word for word, for the simple fact it is a very confusing dialogue that to this day I can't figure out.

Here are some excerpts:

Lucy: Mother, what time did your plane get in?

Mrs. M.: 12:30.

Ricky: What time was it due in?

Mrs. M.: 12:30. Didn't you get my wire?

Lucy: Well, yeah, we got your wire, but it said 9:30.

Mrs. M.: Well?

Ricky: Well?

Lucy: Mother, why did you tell us 9:30 if they told you 12:30?

Mrs. M.: Well! I thought everybody knew that there was three hours difference in time between here and New York.

Ricky: Oh, that does it, brother! Now I've heard everything!

***************************

Ricky: Look, Mrs. McGullicuddy. I would like to explain something to you. In the first place, they meant Pacific Coast time, and in the second place, if you wanted to allow for the time, you should have added three hours. You did the whole thing backwards. You should have said "arriving at 3:30."

Mrs. M.: Oh pooh!

Ricky: Now look, I'm just trying to explain to you what you should have said...

Mrs. M.: I can't hear a word you're saying. You see, it's only quarter passed three, so according to you, I'm not even here yet. Ha!

Ricky: Now how do you like that? I'm only trying to get it straightened out and all I get is "pooh!' and "ha!".

Ethel: Now just a minute Ricky, I think she's right about the time.

(Fade out with Ricky and Fred rebutting and contradicting the women). ;)

So there it is, Mrs. McG. was in fact correct to say 12:30 vs. Ricky saying add three hours. In fact, it doesn't make sense for Pacific and East coast time to even have been said (I know for Mrs. McG. to have said it was simply because she was supposed to have been a little off) but still, Ricky was wrong to even say "add 3 hours." He should have said, "You didn't need to worry abt three hours difference. You should have just told us what time you were due in, don't add or subtract three hours."

BTW, notice the chair Lucy is sitting in? That chair changes for the episode when Lucy dances with the Ricky dummy.

Good memory! They must have changed the chair to make room for the dance scene.

I am really starting to notice how everything has interior "brick" walls. The Tropicana, their apartment, and also the dressing room in "Lucy and the Dummy." I can tell it is just a facade; sometimes the brickwork doesn't match or line up. If we are seeing it on the east coast and the west coast, something is up. I don't think they used bricks in Europe, however.

You will also see that same brick wall in the scene where Lucy and Ricky are filming the Don Juan scene for his screen test. It is the wall that is used as the backdrop for the scene.

Yes, the chair is obviously changed for the final scene when Lucy comes out of Little Ricky's room and comes up behind the chair and slaps Ricky in the head. This is my reason behind the changing of the chair. Lucy thinks it is the dummy in the chair. However, we know that Ricky is to sit there and get slapped by Lucy. To make things clearer, I will refer to the original chair as #1 and the replacement chair as #2.

Chair #1 is a lowback chair. It doesn't have much of a back to support one's head on. If they put the dummy in the chair, the head of the dummy was probably too heavy and it leaned back too far over the chair. Thus, they needed to use a different chair so when the dummy was sitting there, the head would rest on the highback. This is where chair #2 comes in. This was crucial as Ricky was to exit the bedroom, slap the dummy OUT OF CHAIR #2 and he was then to sit in it. Lucy then exits the other bedroom and comes up behind the chair and does that famous slap. Also, chair #1 has the armrests that seem too big for the dummy to just be slapped out of the chair by Ricky. Chair #2 has little armrests and Desi probably found it easier to slap the dummy and have it knocked out of the chair.

Thanks for taking the time to transcribe this and post it. But I must say, even reading this dialogue my head is still spinning. But bottom line, can we assume that Mrs. McGillicuddy actually arrived at 9:30 AM Pacific Time, but her watch said 12:30 PM because it was probably still set on Eastern Time? That would explain why she was already at the hotel (even though nobody knew) when they went to the airport to pick her up at 12:30 PM PACIFIC Time (which would have been 3:30 Eastern Time). As for Ricky's attempt at explaining the time difference, I agree with Mrs. M: Oh pooh!

Yeah, I read the dialogue and I too get a dizzy spell. But it did help to read it (three times  ) because it confirms that Mrs. McG. is a dingbat at times. Yes her flight was due in at 12:30 p.m. but she decided on her own that she needed to subtract three hours, when there was no reason to. When she made her flight arrangements, the person who sold her the ticket would tell her what time her flight was arriving in L.A. (P.S.T.) I guess Mrs. McG. figured in her dizzy little head that even though the flight was arriving in L.A. at noon, it would be 9 a.m. in New York and therefore in the wire stated the morning hour, ASSUMING LUCY AND RICKY would add three hours to that 9 a.m. time. DUH!!!!!! GOD MY HEAD IS HURTING JUST TYPING THIS DAMN POST.
