Sick! Chinese Restaurant Cited For Garlic Stomping

Nanuet Worker Photographed Wallowing In Bowl Of Garlic With His Shoes On

(CBS) NANUET, N.Y. A Rockland County Chinese food restaurant is in hot water after it was discovered that an employee apparently used a suspicious and far-from-delicious method to crush the garlic used in the kitchen.

An official from the county's Department of Health tells CBS 2 that the Great China Buffet in Nanuet was investigated after there it received a complaint that the garlic there is not only sautéed and steamed, but allegedly stomped.

Literally.

John Stoughton, the senior public health sanitarian, showed CBS 2 a picture of a worker from the restaurant standing and stomping in a large bowl of garlic -- with his shoes on.

"He is actually doing this. And there are garlic pieces laying around," Stoughton says. "We don't really approve of someone using their shoes to crush the food with."

The photograph was taken by Dan Barreto, who works at the AT&T store right next to the restaurant. He says he witnessed the alleged garlic parade in the alley behind the restaurant.

"He was jumping up and down on it at first, and then when I got my camera he was just doing one foot and mashing it," Barreto tells CBS 2.

At the restaurant Tuesday, an employee told CBS 2 the man in the picture had been fired. They reportedly claim the food cooked with the ghastly garlic was thrown out and was never served to customers.

The restaurant has been cited with two violations and a warning for a first offense, but if it happens again, the Health Department could really put its foot down -- figuratively speaking, of course -- imposing $1,000 fines per violation.

This is why i'm a little cautious about eating out. Buffets are the worse! You have the food sitting out forever, people sneezing into the food, unclean silverware etc. I remember once when I was visiting my grandma, she took me and my siblings to a buffet, and I caught some dumb behind licking the butterscotch syrup off the laddle and putting it BACK!

There's this Chinese place a few miles west of my house, and it usually has good food. Last year, however, I got a scallops dinner that WAS NASTY. It smelled like -- well, I won't tell you what it smelled like -- and my brother took it back (it was take-out) and got something else.

We haven't eaten there since.

They must do things different at the buffet you go to. Out here the waitresses are always hanging around the buffet area. You wouldn't have a chance to do something like that... I remember one time a customer actually took her plate back up to the buffet to get more and she was chewed out by the waitress. You could hear it at the back of the restaurant. You always have to use a clean plate when you go up to the buffet.

This buffet was in Maryland and this was thirteen years ago so hopefully, this buffet has set some new rules or something.

All buffets should have waitresses hanging around to regulate some kind of rule because people are nasty as hell.

The Buffet I was talking about was in Maryland too. Maybe the buffets around here have gotten better. I go to them a few times a month and their's waitresses everywhere around them which is a good thing.

Sad to say but yes. There was a McDonald's near the racetrack right by my friend's cousin's house that was torn down due to, no lie, rats running around the entire place.
