LAS VEGAS - Somewhere, Kevin Federline is laughing.

An out-of-shape, out-of-touch Britney Spears delivered what was destined to be the most talked about performance of the MTV Video Music Awards _ but for all the wrong reasons. Kicking off the show Sunday night with her new single, "Gimme More," Spears looked bleary and unprepared _ much like her recent tabloid exploits on the streets of Los Angeles.

She lazily walked through her dance moves with little enthusiasm. It appeared she had forgotten the entire art of lip-synching; and, perhaps most unforgivable given her once taut frame, she looked embarrassingly out of shape.

Even the celebrity-studded audience seemed bewildered. 50 Cent looked at Spears with a confused expression; Diddy, her new best friend, was expressionless.

Some comeback.

The VMAs was hoping to reinvent itself on Sunday. After suffering poor reviews and a decline in ratings over the last few years, MTV moved the show to Las Vegas' Palms Casino, shortened the show from three hours to two, and changed the show's setup to focus more on performances than awards.

To that end, Justin Timberlake and Timbaland, Kanye West, Fall Out Boy and the Foo Fighters were each hosting four separate suite parties, where much of the show's performances would be held. MTV was hoping for some unusual pairings and unscripted antics. Other performers were appearing on the show's main stage, in front of an industry-only audience seated at tables, like at the Golden Globes.

Among the stars set to perform were Chris Brown, Lily Allen, Rihanna and Alicia Keys.

The Palms' casino floor, already glittering with slot machines and blinking lights, was transformed into a dazzling red carpet, as the likes of Jennifer Hudson, Kid Rock, Paris Hilton, Jennifer Garner and a newly blond Nelly Furtado were among those who posed for the cameras.

And Nicole Scherzinger, making her solo debut from the Pussycat Dolls, gave a performance for the gawking fans, performing her new single with the rapper Lil' Wayne.

it wasnt horrible it just want up to britney standards. it looked rushed and the stage was pretty crappy. a performance like that wouldve been more suited for a talk show not the vma's.

Sarah Silvermans "jokes" about Britney's kids were uncalled for. The audience sat there in silence the whole time. If I were Britney I wouldve had words with her after that one.
"This is so exciting, wasn't that incredible? Miss Britney Spears everyone. She is amazing, I mean she is 25 years old and has already accomplished everything she is going to accomplish in her life. It's mind blowing, and she's so grown up. She's a mother, you know it's crazy to think that just a few years ago on this very show she was this like sweet innocent little girl in slutty clothes riding around with a python. That not nice calling Madonna a python. But have you seen Britney's kids? Oh my god. They are the most adorable mistakes you have ever seen. They are so cute. There as cute as the hairless vagina they came out of. What I'm serious they're this cute you guy."

who says that?

It's a shame that Britney no longer has good team behind her. She looked utterly pathetic, one of her employees should have stopped this whole mess.

And why was Criss Angel all over her rehearsals?... He didn't do ****, unless he's a freaking choreographer now!

"Gimme More" is still a hot song though. I'll give her that.

I just watched Britney's performance. I think she looks great. She's a little thick in the middle, but she just had kids. Her performance was lackluster. I think that song is horrible. They should play that over and over to captured terrorists. That will make them talk.

Gimme, gimme. Gimme an ice pick so I can stick it through my eye if I have to listen to that again. It sounds like a really bad Janet Jackson dance song.

Maybe this latest humiliation will finally convince Britney she needs to take some time off to get her collective stuff together. Disappear for a while Britney, you are now america's biggest punchline.

Hopefully her family and friends will get off thier cans, step in and get her some help, because it was obvious that she was completly out of it during her performance last night.

I think a female who has had kids and remains with some of her "baby fat" in the right places looks great. I am glad she is not bone thin like Nicole Richie and some of those other horrible looking chicks who think they look great.

I hated her performance. In fact, I hated the whole show. Man, what happened to MTV Video Awards shows? They used to be so good, now they seem so cheesy.

And having it at the Palms is supposed to make it better? I have been to the Palms Casino in Vegas and to me, it is not the place to have an awards show, it just seemed like one big a$$ party with people all over the place and stragglers.

What i meant by that is, shes still looks good for a mother of two, but, that bikini-like outfit didnt flatter her curves at all. She should have worn a nice flowing dress that would have emphasized the curves that still look good , and covered the things that are no longer perfect........ whoever designed that outfit, wasnt looking out for her at ALL, because she's still a stunning looking woman! Sarah Sliverman never appealed to me at all. She's so not funny and the audience would have to agree, not one person thought she was funny.

Back to Britney, I was completely unimpressed, this was an awards show and she didn't bring her A-game, hell, she didn't even try so she has no one to blame but her. So she supposely heard that Sarah Sliverman was going to make fun of her kids before she got out there, of course that would upset her but guess what, she had to deal with it and move on, rise above it or don't go on, a TRUE professional will DELIVER...no matter what!

So yeah, i'm truly disapointed in her, she should take a cue from Alicia Keys and Chris Brown(who did their thing!) and bring it!

Overall, it wasn't that horrible of a performance. Sure she wasn't top notch, or well, prepared, but there's been worse...And she looked smoking hot! (Though that song was god awful)

I hope that was her intention too because there was no way in hell she was serious about that performance. I did kind of feel bad when the cameras showed Rihanna laughing at her and Diddy, 50 cent, and Chris Brown looking at her like "What the hell?"

Her ex husband's performance at the Teen Choice Awards was better than hers, and that's sad.

I agree. I think people are being too harsh. Her performance was nothing special but it wasnt as bad as everyone is making it out to be. That's a lot of the reason people are complaining. They're saying she wasn't ready to be up there....And since she knew she was going to be performing, she should have been working on her, well, performance.

Personally, I didn't think it was that bad. And she looked amazingly hot. People just have way too much to say about this girl.
