View Full Version : Ethel's birthday gift...Those hilarious hostess pants!
Ireneparalegal 09-09-2007, 07:33 PM I love that scene where Ethel finds those pants and Lucy can't wait to see Ethel's reaction.
Surely Lucy should have known that Ethel doesn't give "smart dinner parties". In the time that we have seen the show, when did Ethel ever have a dinner party? The first few seasons she had that horrid apartment, she didn't even want to have the girls over to play bridge or have a club meeting. What was Lucy thinking?
I :brent when I see Ethel take out those pants. I can't believe anyone would want to wear those "checkerboard britches"... as Ethel so nicely put it. I can't even imagine Ethel wearing ballet slippers much less those pants.
That was a great scene. ;)
*ClassicPinUp* 09-09-2007, 07:54 PM I lmao at that scene too! I like how Lucy tries to give ideas to make the pants look better   there's nothing that could of made those pants look better!

As beautiful and slim as Lucy was, I wouldn't want to see her in those clown pants myself. You are right, Lucy was trying to make them sound so "great" to wear, when everyone could see they were horrible.
I have this image in my head of how Ethel would have looked wearing them:eek:
Coffeecup 09-09-2007, 08:12 PM ethel " I'd look better wearing a toaster than those checkerboard britches"

That line is so funny.
I couldn't find anything related to 50's style hostess pants but when I googled "hostess pants" this came up:

omg! What is it about hosting a party that made people want to wear crazy pants?? :p
Madame X 09-09-2007, 08:50 PM The only redeeming quality of the pants was if she ever DID give a smart dinner party, the guests would be so busy gaping at those pants they wouldn't notice the horrible apartment decor.
I'd love to see these in color!

Ireneparalegal 09-09-2007, 10:40 PM :brent thanks for the pic!
They have some sort of jewel encrusted on them as well. I swear, everytime I see those pants, I can't help but think of a court jester. All that is missing is that foolish hat:

Soo true! Heck even Marilyn Monroe couldn't of made those pants look good
Anyone want to take a guess at the color of those pants? I'm thinking the diamond shapes were red, blue and maybe yellow and the pants were white. :)
Ireneparalegal 09-10-2007, 04:09 PM I am too thinking the pants are white whereas the dark diamond area is black. That is how I always imagined it. I too see red for the lighter shaded diamonds.
Superbatboy 09-13-2007, 11:15 PM The funny part too is that there is absolutely NOTHING that would go with those pants.

"You get yourself some ballet slippers and a off the shoulder top with a crushy belt and you're all set!"
"FOR WHAT? HALLOWEEN?" :brent

Ironically, Vivian considered her shoulders to be her best asset. It would take a helluva lot more than an off the shoulder top to salvage that wardrobe nightmare. And ballet slippers! OMG, her feet were bigger than every man's footprints at Grauman's! Maybe the crushy belt would have done it! omg:

:brent Thanx for the laugh. Yeah, Ethel did have enormous feet. They looked like Fred Flintstone's feet.
A BIG crushy belt might have worked. ;)
Madame X 09-14-2007, 12:03 AM Maybe if they gave out a big crushy belt for everyone at the smart dinner party to use as a blindfold, it would have worked! :brent

I bow to you for the funniest line of the day!!!!!!! :notworthy
Coffeecup 09-15-2007, 08:21 PM Everyone says Ethels apartment was tacky. We saw it maybe a dozen times.
Once the kitchen, once the bedroom and the living room several times more. I never thought it was tacky. Maybe a little drab. But it was neat and clean. I would say furniture it would well used. Come to think of many of the furniture was hand me downs from Lucy but Lucy never had them too long. So the place wasn't as drab as everyone says.
Ireneparalegal 09-15-2007, 08:34 PM Uh, yes it was. Look at it in the first season. It was DARK AND UGLY. The wallpaper was horrid and dirty. The furniture was dirty and torn. It was just FUGLY. I think Madame X (Stacy) can do us the favor of putting up a screen cap to remind us of how ugly that apartment was. It was right up there with the Honeymooners kitchen.
It became beautiful AFTER the Ricardos and the Mertzes redecorated and Lucy gave them her furniture.
Mikado 09-15-2007, 08:42 PM That line is so funny.

WOW THOSE ARE UUUUUUUUUUUUUUGLY!!!!!
( No wonder women wore mostly skirts back then ;))
Coffeecup 09-15-2007, 09:05 PM Well I guess I don't know what ugly looks like. I have a wonderful ocean view home and probably don't know what drab/ugly is like. I guess I luck out.

Take a look at the pants on that link, and you'll learn what ugly looks like!
Hope they don't come back in style. lol!

Uuughh. They remind me of capri style pants...pants I hate!
Madame X 09-16-2007, 09:48 PM omg: I just received a pair of hostess pants similar to Ethel's! Unfortunately my ass is three feet wide and the diamonds became ovals. I guess the stunning visual impact wasn't the same.

OMG, tell me you are kidding? No matter, this was funny as hell.
Madame X 09-16-2007, 10:04 PM Oh, now I have to shave above the ankle to wear these pants. Damn!
Ireneparalegal 09-16-2007, 10:29 PM Oh, now I have to shave above the ankle to wear these pants. Damn!

Do you have ballet slippers? Aw hell, just wear socks.
Madame X 09-16-2007, 10:40 PM Thanks, I-
I just figured it out! I will wear my woolen hunting socks with my glass slippers from my 5th grade play and the hostess pants will work! Thanks so much for the help. Of course my 4x ass cheeks will be duct-taped together to make it work!
I am sure my smart dinner party will be a sucess!
Ireneparalegal 09-16-2007, 10:53 PM Thanks, I-

Don't forget a big crushy belt. ;)
I wonder, Fred could've worn one himself, considering he needed a big belt to hold up them pants of his.
Madame X 09-16-2007, 11:27 PM
I guess that big crushy belt would work as toe floss for my big, cornified, oozing, yellowed, cracking feet.
Fred would have found other uses for that belt! His body was perfect. He couldn't even touch his feet, but he was ready to impregnate Ethel and start a legacy for the best baseball player in history.
Mikado 09-17-2007, 02:25 AM Geez MadameX...you need to play the "wrong answer games" a lot more, you have the perfect sense of humour for them

OMG :brent
Mikado is right, you need to play the wrong answer games more often, you have such a great sense of humor and you make me laugh my a$$ off.
Katya 09-28-2007, 11:27 AM I love that episode one of my alltime favorites:D For the love of heaven though what was Lucy thinking:crazy:  The irony is it's the one time Fred would have made a good choice for Ethel since she wanted the toaster.
Everytime I hear Lucy say" Their hostess pants you give wear them when you give smart dinner parties" Ethel "Oh I was wondering what to wear to all thopse smart dinner parties I give!" I just fall apart laughing:lol:
Can you see Fred hosting such a party in a smoking jacket ?
