It seems that in seasons 1-3 the focus was on the life of the Ricardos and Mertzes in the apartment building. Lucy was pretty much housebound and the Ricardo's relationship was based on old-fashioned ideas of marriage and a wife's submissiveness.

In seasons 4-6, they were out of their element most of the time (Calif., Europe, Connecticut) and the focus seemed to be on stories other than Lucy always disobeying and trying to get into showbiz. I think there was so much else going on the writers didn't emphasize Lucy and Ricky's relationship as much.

Just my opinion! :)

I think you said that very well. I couldn't have said it better. I get the feeling since the show was based on a radio show, most of the first 3 season dealt with things (as you so stated) within the home, the relationship, etc. The writers and of course Lucy and Desi felt they could now expand the show with OUTSIDE storylines, such as the trips and so forth.
