Actress Winona Ryder refused to feel guilty in the aftermath of her infamous 2001 shoplifting arrest, because she didn't harm anyone. The Girl, Interrupted star, who was convicted of trying to steal clothing from a Beverly Hills, California department store, insists painkillers she was taking for a broken arm were to blame for her bizarre behavior.
She tells the American edition of Vogue magazine, "I didn't have this tremendous sense of guilt because I hadn't hurt anyone. Had I physically harmed someone or caused harm to a human being, I think it would have been an entirely different experience."

WHY is this even remotely newsworthy? IT WAS SIX YEARS AGO.

I don't understand why this damned her career so badly, especially compared to some of the stuff that Britney, Lindsay and Paris pull and still get seventeenth chances. Winona was so great in the late 80's and early 90's in movies like Heathers, Reality Bites, Beetlejuice, Mermaids, Edward Scissorhands and others. She seemed to continue to have a decent career into the millennium and then suddenly since the shoplifting incident, she's been absent. Why is that? Yea, she did a very stupid thing but if Hollywood continues to give drug addicts and the sort roles, why not Winona?

She needs the publicity.

I can't understand why people would ever look up to a celebrity. Just because they are famous, doesn't mean they're a good role model.

Apparently if you really want the publicity you have to do it again. And again. And again. And appear to be "working on yourself" only to have a relapse. And do it again. And again. :wallbang

That's a very good point. I don't get it either. She didn't kill anyone. It was a victimless crime. She paid her dues to society. It's too bad some people can't move on. There are so many haters out there. It's a shame because she's very talented.
