I don't know much on what happened with Zara Cully, so I thought I'd ask now. I've been watching season 3 a lately on my DVD's, and I noticed she was absent from the first 15 episodes, so was that because her health began getting bad, and what exactly went on then? Then, from a different source I heard her health began going bad around the last couple tapings of the second season. Does anyone know exactly what happened?

I guess I would just say in the year of 1976. I know I had not noticed any signs of sicknesss until the 3rd season

I haven't seen one episode of season 3 yet with Zara Cully in it. Do you know which episode it was that we first saw her for the season?

Ok since it was only 2 eps toward the end of season 3 that's why I thought she didn't appear at all in that season. I knew it was very little or none

God,she only appeared in 2 episodes of season 3. They really should have thought about making her a recurring character by season 3 and 4 instead of having her starring when she wasn't in most episodes. Was she still starring in season 4, and when exactly did she pass away (wasn't it middle of season 4?.

Was she still starring in the second half of season 4 after her passing?

it's too bad they never even took the time to mention it on the show. We all knew she had died, so the least tehy could have done was show an episode or 2 on her death, instead of pretending like nothing happened.

The Last ep she appeared in before her death was November 12, 1977-"The Last Leaf"

They did in Season 5 when Alan Willis returned. When Tom's father died, George made some sort of smart comment about it, and Louise said that was wrong, especially given the respect Tom gave George when Mother Jefferson passed away.

They also had another episode later on about Mother Jefferson when they thought she had cheated on her husband.

Right...it was a Christmas episode and George found out that his father's best friend had an affair with Mother Jefferson after his father died. This was also during Season 5.

I think they might have mentioned it briefly in a later season 4 episode or an early season 5 episode. What I do know for sure is that it was mentioned in the episode, "George Finds a Father" where George finds out that his mama was fooling around with his guardian after his dad died.

It was then brought up again in the episode "Where's Papa," where a trunk of his mother's stuff was sent to the apartment and he ends up searching for his papa's body so that he can have it dug up and moved in the posh cemetary where is Mom was buried.

As was mentioned above, her death was mentioned in The Homecoming (Jay Hammer's first episode), George Finds A Father and Where's Papa. Mother Jefferson was also mentioned in flashboack in the ML King episode, they showed a scene of her in Florence Did it Different Pt 1 and she's also referred to in the flashback scene in Father Christmas. Nice touch to make occassional references to her- she was gone, but still remembered. The same is true of Bentley, Lionel and Jessica in Social Insecurity in year 9 and of Lionel in A Case of Self Defense, Laundry is a Tough Town pt 2, Silver Lining, The Return of Bentley and A New Girl in Town.

I know that I am really, really late on this but I didn't even know that she had passed away. Who was the actress that replaced her because I thought that it was always Zara throughout the entire series.

Well that's because if you didn't come along during that time it would be no way of knowing she passed during the Run of the show unless you were a researching geek like me-lol Also they didn't need a replacement for George' mother since the actress was already up in age

Oh. Okay. I was born in 74 and I remember the Jeffersons comming up but now I see the difference since you've mentioned it. I always have trouble when they change the actors and they look alike like the two darrens on Betwitched. It was years later when I said "They had two darrens?" lol

I always wondered why the producers never devoted an episode to her death. She was a major character and brought in the laughs. If they didn't want to do an episode, at least a few scenes or something.

Well she wasn't a major character, she was a supporting character and her role had decreased anyway due to her sickness so that's probably why they didn't a episode in regards to her death
