I think she was. She is an excellent comic actress but she did not get a chance to use it much on the show. I did like her and John Ritter together. They seemed compatible. They could had wrote Cate to be a lot more funnier instead she was another one of those TV wives that we all got accustomed to over the years.

I always thought she seemed like a minor character in this show. Even though she was portrayed as a good mother, you could tell this show was mostly about John Ritter and he being the mian parent figure in the show when it comes to heart-to-heart talks and stuff like that. When John died, and Katey took over as lead, they branched out her chracter and gave her a lot more to do in the last season and a half.

I guess they could have made Cate funnier, but they didn't because she was written as the more level heaved family member. Paul was the funny one, Bridget was the whacky one, Kerry was the serious/whiney one, and Rory was the strange one. And she remained just as much, if not more level headed when her father and C.J. came.

She was more a minor character in the first season. She always used to start out in the episodes, go to work, and then we didn't see too much of her throughout the rest of the episode. They did give her a lot more to do later on though, especially in the last season.
