I just watched Landmark Part 3 and after all these years and after seeing it umpteen times it still left me in tears. Who'd have guessed a show from 30 years ago could still touch us so deeply? That final episode was so bittersweet, so perfect...I am glad they were given the chance to say goodbye and in such a loving way.

I am glad for my season one DVD. Had someone told me 30 years ago I could have Barney Miller at my fingertips anytime I wanted, I would have ...The one episode that also touches my heart is of course the Jack Soo retrospective.

I'm also glad I own the Season 1 DVD. A wonderful Canadian fan sent me the entire second season so I could have every Chano episode. :eyes:  I have never seen the series finale, but I'd love to someday. It sounds terrific!

Let's see if I can sum it up-it's actually a 3 parter. Wojo is assigned to help a workman in the basement, and in the process finds an old rifle. Turns out it belonged to Teddy Roosevelt and the entire Precinct is declared a National Landmark, and is put up for sale. It's bought by a developer and the detectives pack up and prepare to be transfered. They assume they are going to stay together but find out they are getting split up. Detrich gets sent uptown to Washington Heights, Wojo is assigned to the Roosevelt Island K9 Unit, Harris is sent to Queens, and Levitt is sent to Brooklyn. They are stunned. Harris is so upset about his assigment he says he is going to quit and become a full time writer.

As their time together draws to a close, old friends Ray,Marty,Mr. Driscoll, the Binders, and other recurring characters from over the years show up to say goodbye and show their gratitude, and then Lt. Scanlon, their old nemesis from Internal Affairs shows up to get a last dig in and inadvertantly becomes the one to tell Barney he finally made Deputy Inspector. Barney is shocked and moved and everyone congratulates him. A little later Inspector Luger arrives to say goodbye. As he says hello to "Levine" Levitt loses it and says "For the last time, it's LEVITT! Officer Carl E. LEVITT!". Luger smiles and says "Nah. That's SERGEANT Carl Levitt. Report to the Brookyn Detectives Squad first thing Monday morning." Levitt is visably moved and everyone congratulates him.

Finally Barney looks at his watch and says "Gentlemen, as of now, the 12th Precinct has ceased to exist." The guys gather their things and leave, only to return, unable to say goodbye. Harris says "You know, cops get transferred all the time, it's no big deal. But it's different with us. Something really special happened here." Wojo says they aren't really seperating, they may never see each other again but they'll always carry a piece of each other and the 1-2 with them in their hearts forever. Harris marvels that Wojo has come such a long way and they finally say goodbye. Hugs and emotions follow. Levitt is last and as he tries to say goodbye he breaks down and is hugged by Barney. He leaves and Barney is alone. Slowly, he walks over to Harris's desk and smiles sadly. We are then treated to a flashback about Chano. He moves to Detrich's desk and we get a flashback about Fish, then Wentworth. Finally, he stops at Nick's old desk and nearly breaks into tears as he remembers Nick, then takes his things, walks slowly to the door, turns around for one last look, turns the lights out, and leave. The door closes to deafening applause as the following appears on the darkened screen:

"GOODBYE AND THANK YOU FROM ALL OF US AT THE OL' 1-2"

It's quite bittersweet and lovely. I hope you get to see it soon as my summary doesn't do it justice.

There are a few heart touching moments, like the final scene of "Hero" when Chano cries, the end of the second part of "Homicide" when they find out Mr. Cotterman has been murdered, the scene in "Goodbye Mr. Fish" when Fish cries, and of course when he leaves for the last time, and two incredibly brilliant performances by Ron Glass, first in "The Harris Incident" and then in "Liquidation" when he finds out he's lost everything he owns in a lawsuit.
Barney Miller was just outstanding TV!

That's a nice summary. Thanks for taking the time to write and post it. I saw the finale, and you did it justice. :)

Welcome to the boards.

Which scenes were used in the flashbacks of Chano, Fish and Wentworth?

I was so sad when I heard that Barney Miller was going off the air -- I had watched each and every week for eight years -- but "Landmark" was a first-class way to say good-bye, which sums up Barney Miller -- first class!!

OH Nuts!
