View Full Version : 'Halloween' Slashes Holiday Box Office Record
comedyfreak 09-02-2007, 04:32 PM A re-imagining of the classic slasher movie "Halloween" broke the record for a new release during the U.S. Labor Day holiday weekend, according to studio estimates issued on Sunday.
The movie, directed by rock star-turned-filmmaker Rob Zombie, earned about $26.5 million since opening on Friday, easily beating the rosiest predictions.
After two weekends at No. 1, the teen comedy "Superbad" slipped to No. 2 with $12.2 million for the three-day period.
Two other films debuted in the top 10. The martial arts movie parody "Balls of Fury" came in at No. 3 with a modest $11.6 million, while the Kevin Bacon vigilante thriller "Death Sentence" barely registered a pulse at No. 8 with $4.2 million. Their respective studios said the results were in line with expectations.
"Halloween" distributor Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer expects its film will hit $30 million when sales for the Monday holiday are included. Observers had expected it to make $20 million for the four-day period. Final data will be released on Tuesday.
The three-day sum smashes the $16.5 million Labor Day opening record set two years ago by "Transporter 2," which added $3.6 million on Monday. The all-time record for the four-day period is $29.3 million set by 1999's "The Sixth Sense" in its fifth weekend.
"Halloween," the eighth film to be spun off from John Carpenter's 1978 original, focuses on the grim childhood of its villain, Michael Myers. It cost about $15 million to make, said Bob Weinstein, co-founder of the film's closely held producer, the Weinstein Co.
Despite its success, the former Miramax Films chief doubted there would be another "Halloween" film.
"I never say never never ... but it would have to be something very, very different," he told Reuters.
The studio does plan to make two more movies with Zombie, whose real name is Rob Cummings. Zombie, 42, rose to fame in the 1990s at the helm of the heavy metal band White Zombie. He made his feature directing debut with 2003's "House of 1000 Corpses."
After three weekends, "Superbad" has earned $89 million, and the film will easily pass the $100 million mark, said Columbia Pictures, a unit of Sony Corp.

Mikado 09-02-2007, 05:07 PM DISGUSTING....Just goes to show that if theres garbage to feed the masses, theyll eat it up as if it were candy, and Hollywood has learned the lesson well! :thumbsdow:
LuLu Rogers 09-02-2007, 07:05 PM I think it's great that Halloween is such a big hit. I'm going to see it tomorrow and I can't wait!!  :woohoo:
Mr. Television 09-02-2007, 07:07 PM One of the very few remakes that look like it might be good.
Mikado 09-02-2007, 07:42 PM With all the real nutcases serial-killing innocent people in the World, it never ceases to amaze me, that people want to watch garbage like this at the movies! To me, murder as entertainment is morally reprehensible.
coffield3 09-02-2007, 07:55 PM I hear what your saying but i guess people have that morbid side to them, i didnt think it would do that well i never thought horrors did these days, its probably because its a remake of a classic horror and it has a huge cult following.I didnt like the certain scenes in this remake though too much nudity and the rape scene.

Well, that 's what real serial killers are like, actually, all the more reason not to glorify them. Anyway, thats the last post I'm making in this thread...I'm sure I'm just "spitting in the wind" here!

Yes its like when they make movies of real seriel killers they become famous in a way which is crazy? i remember watching a nick broomfield documentary on aileen wurnous (i think thats how you spell her name) and nick was giving rights to interview her in prison and she stated " oh great am i going to be a movie star" she was stating how she would want the film to be? mad.

Just popping in a thread to spread your usual optimistic cheer around, I see. Is there anything you DO like? People have loved horror movies for close to a century now. How about letting members talk about it, without piling on the guilt.
catlover79 09-02-2007, 09:30 PM One thing I don't get - why are all of these Halloween movies released in July and August instead of, say, OCTOBER!??

That is weird. Was the first one released around Halloween? I sort of feel like it was, but not sure.

The original Halloween was released around Halloween 1978.

To me, murder as entertainment is morally reprehensible.People like suspense, people like horror. It helps people deal with their insecurities about death and the fear of the unknown.
No one has a perfect reason as to why certain members of society kill and murder. But horror movies aren't one of them. And if they are, that doesn't mean that other normal, well-adjusted people can't enjoy them.
It was either Ozzy Osbourne or his bandmate Geezer Butler, or one of the others, who uncovered this truth in the late 60's when their band was getting off the ground. They saw a line of people waiting to go in to see a horror movie. And the band asked themselves, why are all these people waiting around, paying to get the crap scared out them? And they realized, it was people get a thrill out of being around evil. And the movie these folks were lining up to see would lend itself to Ozzy's band's name:

The character Michael Myers is not based on any real person.

I know that but there has been movies based on real events, which are always the best horrors to me, like texas chainsaw massacre, exorcist amityville horror, i read that almost every horror is based on some kind of true event which i can believe, wasnt wolf creek based on true events?

Wasnt the mask they used a William shatner mask? lol
Myles 09-03-2007, 03:37 PM Wasnt the mask they used a William shatner mask? lol
Haha, indeed it was. What they did is cut out larger holes for the eyes, paint it white and tease the hair.
In Rob's Halloween, the mask was pretty decrepit-looking.

Wof creek was supposed to be based on true events. All the rest were inspirations from real events, but not true themselves. There was no Texas Chainsaw Massacre or Psycho they were loosely based on someone else, a guy named Ed Gein who killed 4 or 5 women in the mid 50's in Wisconsin who liked to dress in woman's clothes and had a domineering mother. He also made a mask of human skin. I read up on Amityville and it's a total hoax made up by Lutz for money, there were killings in the house by the original owners son but no spirits exist according to the new owners. I was disappointed when I found this out. It's just entertainment for those who like a good fright.

Oh yeah i know that texas was based on ed gein now he was one messed up guy!! so amityville was a hoax then it seemed far fetched didnt it. What about the exorcist?

People are entitled to their opinions senior!
LuLu Rogers 09-03-2007, 08:22 PM I just went to see Halloween and I got up and left after the first 10 minutes. I hated it! They made a mockery of the original. I have to say it was the worst movie I've ever seen, bar none. Sorry to you folks who liked it.
coffield3 09-03-2007, 08:31 PM I must admit i wasnt much for it at the beginning at all, but it got good after all that redneck crap! :)

Oh, really? I'm sorry you didn't like it :( I was actually saying 'Wtf?' to myself during the first 10 minutes too, but I held out a little longer and enjoyed it a lot. I'd say the movie picks up after the first half hour.
The original is light years better than this version, though...I definitely agree with you on that! :)

I haven't researched that movie, the only things I've heard were strange things happening on the set.
I do enjoy a good horror movie, hope this one won't disappoint me.

I was disappointed at the beginning too. Just like Jack Nicholson's Lady said I too was ready to walk out. It did get better though but all of that profanity I could have done without.

Exactly! I heard F*** over 20 times in the first 10 minutes! It was crazy! I'll rent it when it comes out on DVD so I can skip the first part and see if the rest is any good.

I think I was looking forward to this movie more than most and I was a bit disappointed with it. The nudity, gore and language are things I expected from a Zombie film, but it seemed to drag on for a little too long.

The most interesting nudity was that of Danielle Harris who played Annie in the movie. She use to be on Roseanne and also played the little girl in the earlier Halloween sequels.
Mr. Stefani 09-06-2007, 01:08 AM i'm a Halloween fan so I was looking foward to this....but it was one of the worst movies i've ever sat through.

I totally agree. I guess since I'm such a huge fan of the original, I was expecting a modern day version of the same film. This movie really shouldn't be called a re-make because it is NOTHING like the original.
colt45allstar 09-06-2007, 04:28 AM I'm not sure if I should be happy about this or not.
The film itself was respectable... but obviously can't hold a candle to the original.
I suppose it's good that a Horror movie is doing well at the box office.
It's not so good that it's yet another remake that's doing so well... which should spawn even more remakes in the near future.
This remake trend is annoying. Classic Horror's being remade left and right and in addition to that Asian Horror is also constantly being remade and as a fan of both the classics and The Asian films it's sickening.
By the same token I'm a hypocrite of sorts, as I went to see this movie Opening Night and thus contributed to it's massive box office amount.
The day my favorite film of all time The Exorcist is remade (and I do think it will eventually happen) is the day I give up on Hollywood altogether
On another note the reason is wasn't released around Halloween?
Simple alot of high profile competition around that timespan. Saw 4 comes to mind for one.
Dean Winchester 12-23-2007, 11:07 PM this just came out on DVD, I saw it on Friday. I must say I was incredibly disappointed but at the same time knew it was going to be awful. The first Halloween from 1978 is my all time favorite horror movie and I honestly did try to watch this movie without comparing it with the original, but you could not compare them at all.
I think Zombie made a total mockery of the entire franchise and this one was almost as bad as Halloween Resurrection. Michael was nowhere the killing machine in the original as they made him in this movie. In the original, he killed his sister as a boy, and then kills the guy in the truck (shown offscreen tho you see the corpse), Annie, Linda and her boyfriend, in this loose telling, Michael kills everyone who looks at him the wrong way. I also hated the way the events were completely out of order in this movie, and what on earth was Zombie thinking killing Loomis off? Granted, they insinuated that died at the end of Halloween 2 in the explosion, but yet you found out he survived when the revisited the Myers storyline in 4.

I couldn't have said it better myself! The original Halloween is my all time favorite horror movie as well.

I really did try to watch it with an open mind, and found myself getting into it in the "early years", even though Michael was way too old as a boy considering in the original he was six when he murdered his sister. Yet as soon as they went to the Laurie Strode storyline, I completely gave up on the movie and hated how everything played out of order and sequences took place that never happened. I could not believe that Zombie eschewed the big payoff scene where Laurie walks into the bedroom and sees Annie's corpse with Judith Myers' headstone, for a cheesier scene.
