View Full Version : Let's Uplift This Decades Sitcoms a Little!
Adamantium 09-02-2007, 04:20 PM Though I think we are currently in the worst decade for sitcoms, I think we should take this time and talk about the good stuff of this decade's sitcoms. First of all, even if they suck, at least they're trying. And there are actually quite a few that don't suck.
It seems to me like a lot of the early ones that were really good didn't live long. For example "Andy Richter Controls the Universe" and "Titus" and "The Tick." Even "The Ellen Show" and "DAG". So with all those good to great shows getting canned after a season or two (or not even a full season) it made me resent all those that made it. Such as "Two and a Half Men" and "According to Jim" and even "George Lopez". And especially "The Office."
This decade also gave us "Arrested Development" and "That '70s Show" along with "The King of Queens," "Curb Your Enthusiasm," "Reno 911!," as well as "8 Simple Rules." So I for one will stop bashing this decade. Like I say, it's still the worst decade for sitcoms, but that doesn't mean that all the sitcoms suck. Or does it? ;)
Mikado 09-02-2007, 05:20 PM I didnt like ANY of those shows you mentioned....thank gosh for Corner Gas ( The only 2000s sitcom that I watch )
I truly like only a few 2000s sitcoms, but the ones that I do like, I don't look at them any different than I look at sitcoms of the past. The first season of "8 Simple Rules" and the entire run of "Reba" presented me with some damn good comedy that I hope I'll be able to see in reruns for years to come. I'll never forget how much I anticipated "Reba" and loved it for its whole run. First "current" sitcom that I ever felt that way about.
Mr. Television 09-02-2007, 06:28 PM Very few sitcoms from this decade I like. I did love Titus and 8SR. The only other ones I liked was GFL and My Name is Earl.
Skywalker 09-02-2007, 08:54 PM I don't know if I would say that this is the worst decade for sitcoms, but it's far from the best, that's for sure. I've watched many of the sitcoms that have aired over the past decade and most of them were either average or awful. There were a few exceptions, however. Arrested Development and That 70's Show, IMO were the best sitcoms from this decade. Both of those shows are among my all time favorites, ranking right up there with the classic sitcoms from the 70's, 80's and 90's. A few of my other favorites from this decade are My Name is Earl and Two and a Half Men.
There were a lot of shows that had the potential to be great, but because of low ratings, were cancelled way before their time like Andy Barker, P.I., The Tick and The Knights of Prosperity.
Honorable mention: (These are shows that I like to watch, but none of them would ever make my top 50 sitcoms list)
The Office
Curb Your Enthusiasm
Yes Dear
Titus
Still Standing
8 Simple Rules
Grounded for Life
Adamantium 09-02-2007, 09:14 PM I'm currently watching season 1 of "My Name Is Earl" on DVD and I'm liking it. So that's another good show from this decade.
I also watched all of season 1 of "Til Death" and I like that show, too. That's what got me writing this thread. Realizing that not all the shows are as bad as I make them out to be.
My favorite is still the very short-lived "Andy Richter Controls the Universe." I was devastated when it was cancelled - both times. It just had a wonderful cast who had great chemistry together. 19 episodes were produced, but FOX only aired 14. I have the 14 on tape.
catlover79 09-02-2007, 09:15 PM I sure hope that Back To You will not only be a good, funny show, but that it can revive the sitcom genre and send these crappy reality shows packing!!

I sure hope so. I hate reality shows. They've ruined modern television.

*For a while, I was being a snob, and would only watch 1 or 2 sitcoms from the 2000`s...Then I decided to open my eyes, and found some GREAT shows.
"The Office" is one of the best shows on TV, comedy, or drama.
I discovered "Curb Your Enthusiasm" this past summer, and laughed out loud at every single episode. It`s hands down the funniest show I've ever seen in my life...I watched some episodes 3 times each! I can't get enough of this show.
"8 Simple Rules" was a great show, with never ending comedy, and lot`s of heart.
"Reba" (along with 8 Simple Rules) showed that there are still great FAMILY sitcoms out there.
"That 70`s Show" and "Will & Grace" are 2 shows I first started watching in syndication (though I would later watch the last few seasons of W&G in primetime). They were different from a lot of shows before, and after them, and were very funny, and nicely written.
I like the bottom 4 shows on my list, but I don't love them, like the others...All in all, the 2000`s hasn't been THAT bad for sitcoms.

I couldn't have said it better myself, Sonny. :D

I was the same way. Like I stated earlier, however, mine was more resentment. A lot of my favorites from this decade were cancelled early on and other shows made it to a few seasons and that ticked me off. So I immediately took it out on the successful shows. I was wrong in doing that, but hey, I did it, lol. I'm going to try and be open-minded about all sitcoms. My goal is to have at least something nice to say about every sitcom there is. :)
Oh, I also really loved the short-lived Oxygen sitcom "Campus Ladies." That was the ONLY show of that type (half-scripted, half-improved) that I have actually liked, and I not only liked it, I LOVED it.

comedyfreak 09-03-2007, 04:52 AM Out of the ones mentioned I really only watched That 70's Show, According To Jim, George Lopez Show, 8 Simple Rules, Reba, Less Than Perfect, My Wife And Kids. It hasn't been the best decade for sitcoms.

Oh yeah, I liked "Less than Perfect" too. I also enjoyed "Maybe It's Me," which was a short-lived sitcom that aired after "Reba" from 2001-2002 on the WB.

Me too...we can only hope!
And just to add my two cents to this conversation, I'm willing to bet that a big part of the problem is the growing competitiveness of these stations; with that comes a big lack of patience in giving shows a try for a decent length of time. I happened to just be getting into "Titus" when it was yanked. There isn't a lot of breathing room for shows nowadays.
Buffyboy323 09-03-2007, 12:33 PM i like all the shows in your top 10 list except reba and sex and the city .i really didnt care too much for the office at first but im kind of starting to get into it now i also like 30 rock
You don't like Reba? You should try it out...And I understand about Sex and The City. It was a good, funny show, but I never found it to be the greatest show ever, like a lot of people consider it to be. I think it was a little overrated (like I said, I mostly care about the first 6 on my list).
I wasn't too into The Office either, at first. It took a little time, and man, I'm glad I stuck with it. It`s great.
I'm going to rent the 1st season of 30 Rock this week. I always hear great things about that show.
Buffyboy323 09-03-2007, 12:39 PM Oh yeah, I liked "Less than Perfect" too. I also enjoyed "Maybe It's Me," which was a short-lived sitcom that aired after "Reba" from 2001-2002 on the WB.
I liked Less Than Perfect as well. I missed a lot of the last season, because I think they just burned the episodes off during the summer. I could be wrong though...
Maybe It`s Me was good too. I'm surprised it didn't get picked up for another season.
And speaking of shows canceled before their time, I also liked Undeclared, Raising Dad, Run Of The House, and Happy Family.
waichingliu81 09-03-2007, 02:16 PM to be honest, the 00s was and is worst decade for sitcoms and as for today, well, what the hell has happened? its sad that there aren't that many great shows on right now though part of that blame lies with the producers and makers of those over-rated, crappy reality tv shows. i don't want to watch those types of programmes, i want to watch comedies and sitcoms. my favourite shows currently are two and a half men, ugly betty and everybody hates chris. cannot stand all the other programmes
DSfan 09-03-2007, 02:30 PM there was an okay show tucson or something that was on the wb about 4 yrs ago i think... what was it called again?

Your talking about The WB`s "Greetings From Tuscan." That was another good one....I liked "Grosse Point" as well.

Reality shows have been winding down for the past 2 (or so) years...There's been plenty of good, quality shows in the 2000`s. It`s just a matter of personal taste.
comedyfreak 09-03-2007, 06:43 PM Another great underrated sitcom I just discovered while watching Lifetime is Still Standing, it's a crack up don't know why it was cancelled the show use to be on Monday nights. The Mom use to be in Square Pegs as Sarah Jessica Parker's best friend, she still looks good.
tbswatcher 09-03-2007, 07:25 PM According to Jim!
I've been watching a lot of the hour long comedy/drama shows, like Desperate Housewives, Ugly Betty, Supernatural, etc. But I still enjoy My Name Is Earl and Two And A Half Men. I also liked The King Of Queens, Joey, Everybody Loves Raymond and Will & Grace but they took those off. Maybe some of the (few) new sitcoms will be good this fall.
