On "Roseanne", Roseanne started to spank/hit DJ when he stole and crashed the family car, but then she regretted it and said her emotions got the best of her.

A very touching episode.

Mentions of recreational spanking between adults on the other hand...

The Waltons did it at least twice. In one of the early episodes Olivia threatened one of the boys with "the switch." I can't remember which one at the moment.

In a later episode, "The Tailspin," in which Jim Bob wanted to drop out of school and join the Air Corps (known as the Air Force today). Corabeth was tutoring him in, I think, either English or literature. In one scene Jim Bob said something critical to Corabeth about her ways, and John was right there and threatened to take him to the woodshed.

In the pilot episode of The Wonder Years it could be implied that Kevin got a spanking for throwing that apple into the cafeteria. The narrator said, "In my 12 1/2 years my father had never struck me. But he'd given Wayne a beating twice. And I recognized that glazed look in his eyes. Besides, maybe I deserved it." I can't draw a definite conclusion as to whether Kevin got a spanking. (Can anyone else?)

In one episode of Andy Griffith one of Opie's friends is acting real bad, and Andy tells his father to take him to the woodshed. Andy was always spanking Opie.

The brat in that episode deserved a spanking and at no time during the shows run did Andy ever spank Opie. He did tell him more than once that he was gonna get a whipping but it never happened.

In an episode of "Maude," Carol's son Phillip was staying with Maude and co. for a bit while Carol and her hubby were out for the night and Phillip was acting very bratty and towards the end, he threw a toy model of a boat and then Maude had it up to her head with his actions and then toldPhillip that he was getting a spanking.

To which Phillip replied: "That's a big deal!"

Maude came back and said: "Oh you think that's a big deal, I'll show you the whole DECK!!!"

and of course Maude proceedes on to spanking Phillip but then it seem like she cried briefly, maybe for regretting to have to spank Phillip and then Phillip came over to her and told her that he was sorry and then Maude briefly brushes him off by saying "Oh go away, you little jerk!" and then she hugs him, just before Phillip rats out the mouth and tells his mom that: "Guess what, Mom? Grandma just beat the hell out of me!"

I'm surprised no one brought up the spanking moment on Good Times where Michael's nemesis-turned friend got a "Big Mac" from James Sr. Michael's friend refused to study and then James turned to him and says "Around here, my family studies and since you're part of my family now I have the right to whip yo' behind!" and then he rebuttles back again and gotten James's patented "Big Mac" spanking.

I really think this is an irrelevant thread. I mean, one might think spanking is fine, but it wasn't like the parents in these shows were beating their kids to death. They just deserved a quick spanking for being bad, and that's it. The samet hing happens today as it has happened for years.

I'll go into newer shows, that I have actually seen.

On "Fresh Prince in Bel Air", it could almost sound like Will was spanked. I seem to remember a dialogue like this:
Phil: If it doesn't, I'll have to take it out on your behind.
Will: And that would be nasty, wouldn't it?
And once, Will worriedly asked "Am I not too old for spanking?" or something to that effect.

I also remember a "Kenan and Kel" episode, when Kenan and Kel had to replace a big 800 dollar TV set with a little 50 dollar TV set, and Kenan's parents were just paralyzed by shock, when they show how small the TV set was. Then Kenan said something like "You're never too old for spanking, are you?"

:yeahthat The boy in that episode deserved a trip to the woodshed. I could have taken him there myself. He would rather see his father in jail than to have his bike taken away. He was a :crybaby:

There was an episode of 'Diff'rent Strokes' called 'The Spanking'. Arnold dropped water balloons from the balcony and they landed on the maintenance man. Mr. Drummond told him he was going to spank him, so Arnold hid, but they found him and Willis spanked him hard.

Let's not forget "What's Happening!!". Both Raj and Dee recieved spankings throuout the run of the show. Dee was the right age to get spanked, but Raj at 16 or 17 was too old, lol.

And on the first episode of "Grounded for Life," the Grandpa comes to babysit the two boys and says right off the bat "There will be spankings." One boy responds "But what if we don't do anything to deserve a spanking?" and the Grandfather says "No, there WILL be spankings." lol

I really hope the grandpa didn't spank them. Maybe he just wanted them to stay out of trouble and threatened them with it?

I think it is safe to say that those who were spanked as children (not abused) have no issue with spanking. I was never spanked.
I spanked my two oldest daughters on less than five occasions TOTAL. My son who is 5 has had his share for behavior that he no longer does ever since he got spanked the last time a year ago.

Doesn't Sweden has the toughest anti-spanking laws? My family dynamics class focused primarily on Sweden. Very interesting place.

Spanking has been totally outlawed here since 1979. And it's a good thing too, because spanking can so easily become abuse. But other European countries have followed suit. But the UK outlawed spanking as punishment in the schools only some ten years ago, and I think parents still are allowed to spank their children.

 That episode is priceless!

It was so funny that that episode was spoofed on a episode of "Robot Chicken" and it had Mr. Drummond (not Willis) actually spank Arnold.

Parents are allowed here, I know we outlawed it from teachers as that strikes me as being wrong, simply because its really upto the parent to choose how to punish their child.

I know in most of the UK spanking is legal (obviously to a degree), abuse is abuse - spanking usually isn't. Scotland however I think have banned it, I don't think cases of actual child abuse dropped - the parents might however have seen less than favourable results from the children.

I don't see a problem with rearing a child as long as it isn't abuse. However I don't like how Ricky would spank Lucy on I Love Lucy that's my only beef with that show.

Although I am in favor of Parents spanking their children, I was never in favor of teachers spanking students. For one think that was up to the parents and for another thing they used paddles and that has led to abuse. I've seen that first hand. Plus the teachers liked to really humiliate the students.
