Now this is an episode that really cracks me up. Governor Gatling tells everyone they’ll be vacationing at his Uncle Murray’s lodge for a fun snowy, skiing weekend. Benson has no interest in going whatsoever but after realizing he’ll be stuck alone at the mansion with Kraus, it suddenly doesn’t look like such a bad option. LOL
They arrive and find a place that’s not exactly up to their ideal standards. It’s cold, not particularly clean, and that damn bearskin rug keeps tripping them! Taylor is complaining he is sick and Marcy freaks out when she finds a raccoon in the bedroom (she thought it was a bear). Well, at least Katie is happy to be there.
The next morning we find Kraus has arrived at the lodge after all, and “took a bus to the village and walked up the mountain” (a story she’d have to repeat every time someone entered the room) to get to the lodge. Once Benson sees her there, he decides it’s time to leave…unfortunately there was a monster snowstorm the night before which will force him (and the others) to stay put. They have hardly any food and no way to get to the market. This is bad enough but then they later have to deal with a man and his pregnant wife who manage to find their lodge thanks to the tunnel Benson shoveled from the window. And of course, the woman is about to give birth. This is one of Gene’s early shining moments as he comes to the rescue to delivery the baby boy.
There are a lot of really funny moments in this episode. The bearskin rug thing is a riot. Everyone trips over it once except for Katie and Kraus. Pay attention to when Governor Gatling trips over it—if his head doesn’t hit that door it comes pretty damn close!
Kraus repeating the story I mentioned above—that was really funny. She got a little more irritated every time someone asked her when or how she got there.
The part when Benson tells Taylor to go up the chimney and write “help” on the roof. When Taylor refuses and Benson aggress to do it, he starts going up the chimney and Gene says, “Do you see anything?” Benson replies, “Yeah, I see the last guy that tried to get out this way.” LOL
Would you really eat raisin flakes that were 15 years old? Yuck! I think I’d rather just have a mouthful of snow. They had enough of it. And speaking of the snow, it was funny how fake it was. If you open a door and snow is pressed against it, the snow will fall into the doorway, not stay perfectly still like it did here. You could see the snow that was in the window was probably just pieces of Styrofoam.
Although I know it added to the storyline, I didn’t like the part with the pregnant couple. I liked the main actors just annoying each other at the lodge. I would have preferred to see a different ending but I understand why they did what they did.
Other funny quotes:
Taylor: “Why don’t you just kill me Benson? Kill me right now.”
Benson: “Sweep first, then we’ll talk.”
Benson: “Katie, try not to track any of this dirt onto that nice clean snow.”
Great episode. I really like this one.
