(The cafeteria. Jo looks bored as she sits on a chair reading a book. Blair walks in, playing with her hair)

Blair (to herself): Hello, gorgeous!
(Jo looks up in disgust)
Blair: Oh, I'm sorry, Jo, I was talking to myself.
(Jo gets up angrily)
Jo: You know, Warner, one day you're going to...
Blair: One day, Jo, I'd like to see you haul off and just sock someone instead of threatening them.
Jo: Like you?
Blair: No... What are you doing, anyway?
Jo: I'm bored.
Blair: Is it the fact right now, back home, you'd be doing something worthwhile, like stealing something or something like that?
Jo: Warner...
(Nancy walks in)
Nancy: Hey, Blair, come over to the dorm. Tootie and Natalie are already there.
Jo (kinda shy): Can I come too?
Blair: She's bored.
Nancy: Sorry, Jo, this is just for, uh..
Jo: People who aren't "new" to Eastland?
Nancy: Well, yes...
Blair: I'm coming, Nancy.
(The two walk off. Jo sits back down, still bored.)

(The hallway. Jo walks towards her dorm, continuing to read. She stops as she hears Sue Ann's voice in her dorm.)
Sue Ann: So how's Jo settling in?
Natalie: Doing anything but settling.
Blair: She'll grow on us.
Tootie: Sooner or later.
(Jo continues listening)
Cindy: So you four are stuck together till you pay off that damage?
Blair: Sad but true.
Nancy: Poor you.
Blair: Jo's... just...
Natalie: Going to be hard to live with.
Tootie: Yeah.
(Jo stops listening and starts walking faster, tears in her eyes.)

(An hour later. Mrs. Garrett realizes she can't find Jo anywhere. She knocks on the dorm [of Sue Ann, etc]'s door)
Sue Ann: Come in!
Blair (under her breath): Better not be Jo after if she heard what we said.
Natalie (under her breath, to Blair): Yeah, you'd be killed for it.
(Mrs. Garrett walks in)
Mrs. Garrett: Have any of you seen Jo?
Blair: Last time I saw her she was in the cafeteria.
Mrs. G: She's not there.
Nancy: Maybe she, uh,...
Mrs. G: I'll keep looking.

(She walks into the other girls' dorm and sees Jo packing)
Mrs. Garrett: Jo?
Jo: What?
Mrs. G: What are you doing?
Jo (frustrated): What does it look like, Mrs. Garrett? What does it -
Mrs. G (cutting it off): Is something wrong?
Jo: Oh, no. Nothing except I just happened to hear Blair, Natalie, and Tootie talking about me to the others.
Mrs. G: Maybe they were saying how nice you were or saying nice things...
Jo: Oh, "Jo's going to be hard to live with?" "Jo hasn't settled in yet?" That's your idea of nice, Mrs. G?
Mrs. G: Go tell them how you feel.
Jo: No. I don't do the feelings stuff. I leave.
Mrs. G: Leave Eastland?
Jo: Hitch a ride. My way or the highway. That kind of stuff.
Mrs. G: Jo...
Jo: What?
Mrs. G: I wouldn't do this if I were you.
Jo: Well, you're not so you can do stuff your way and I can do it mine!

(Leaves the room angrily as Mrs. Garrett shakes her head unhappily)
Mrs. Garrett: Those girls ought to be ashamed if they knew what Jo's up to.
(Blair, Natalie, and Tootie walk in)
Natalie: Did you find Jo?
Mrs. Garrett: I did. And girls, I think it's time we had a little talk.
Tootie: About what?
Mrs. Garrett: About friendships... and talking about people...
Tootie: Oh man I've heard this talk about a hundred times in my life!
Mrs. Garrett: Make it 101 today. I'd also like to talk to you about Jo...
Blair: What about her?
Mrs. Garrett: What if, hypothetically, I heard you girls talking about me in a very unkind way. "Mrs. Garrett is so mean." "Mrs. G makes us clean the dishes."
Natalie: You'd be mad!
Mrs. Garrett: Natalie, you understand.
Natalie: No I don't. What's this got to do with Jo if we're talking about you?
Mrs. Garrett: Imagine if Jo heard you talking about her.
Natalie: She'd be really mad!
Blair: Mrs. Garrett... I have a confession to make...
Mrs. Garrett: Yes, Blair?
Blair: I talked about Jo.
Natalie: Me too.
Tootie: I guess I did.
Mrs. Garrett: I'm glad you told me this, even though I already knew.
Tootie: How?
(Jo walks in, putting down her suitcase)
Jo: From me. I heard you three and I'm not making any promises to forgive you or anything like that.
Blair: We don't deserve to be forgiven.
Natalie: Yeah.
Tootie: Well, maybe...
Natalie: Tootie!!!
Tootie: I'm just saying maybe in that kind heart of yours you've got, Jo, you can forgive and forget...
Jo: I'll forgive, I guess.
Mrs. Garrett: That's wise, Jo.
Jo: But that doesn't mean I'll forget. (breaks into a smile, showing she's kidding) Come on, while you're here, help me unpack.
Tootie: Where were you going anyway?
Jo: How should I know? I didn't plan ahead!
(Everyone laughs as they help Jo unpack..
