View Full Version : As a child did you play "camp out" in your backyard?
Ireneparalegal 08-29-2007, 12:35 AM I had a few sleepovers in my backyard with our camping tent that my family used when we went camping. It was fun. I remember we would take snacks out to the tent and something to drink so we wouldn't have to go into the house for anything other than the bathroom. I remember my older brother scared the bejesus outta me and my friends... It was dark and quiet and then all of a sudden he made this loud noise and we screamed our heads off.
sweetdiggity 08-29-2007, 12:47 AM I did that a few times! It was always fun. Except one time...
My dad and brother scared the hell outta me and my two cousins. They told us about a killer that had escaped from jail (wasn't true), and late that night when we were in the tent, they snuck outside and were making noises with the gate. Then, they were throwing tiny chunks of ice at the tent trying to scare us. Well, it worked.
We thought the killer was in our yard, and we were damn near crying.
I can laugh now, but I was only like 9 when that happened and I could have killed my dad and brother for doing that.

Older brothers can be so mean!!!

OMG, reading your post just made me :brent
I am certain it was traumatic when it happened, but it is funny!!! See how things that were so bad for us as kids, we can look back and laugh our a$$e$ off abt them.
Mikado 08-29-2007, 02:20 AM I used to do it "In style" in the 20ft Jayco hardtop trailer we used to travel with, after my parents stopped taking holiday trips for awhile
( wed set it up in the backyard the same way we had set it up on numerous campsites )
freshprinceofLA 08-29-2007, 04:03 AM No but I did camp out in a fort I made inside the house never outside though.
80sTrivia 08-29-2007, 05:28 AM I used to pitch the tent in the back yard and sleep outside quite a bit as a child. We lived out in the country, so there was plenty of room, and I loved sleeping outside, with the sounds of the frogs and crickets to help lull me to sleep! :)
coffield3 08-29-2007, 07:50 AM No my parents never allowed us at our home, but i went to friends homes and camped out.:)
Ireneparalegal 08-29-2007, 12:49 PM Mikey, you reminded me of something else. We had a camper, the kind attached atop a truck. My friend and I used to love playing in there. We pretended it was our "apartment" that we would one day have after we established ourselves in our "clothing store" and make lots of money!
I remember when the tents were gone but we still wanted to "camp out" we used the camper instead.
catlover79 08-29-2007, 01:36 PM I think we camped out in the backyard at least once - but mostly we camped out on Friday nights in the living room.

Oh even that way too. My gosh, you guys are reminding me of stuff I forgot. We would get big blankets and throw them over the furniture and pretend they were tents. We'd put pillows inside and have a ball!

On a similar note, when i was little, we had a big apple tree that used to make TONS of fruit, unfortunately, because of the insects, it would invariably fall off the tree before ripening, meaning we had a yard full of spoiled apples, however, there was a bright side..........
Me , my brother and friend Jackie would gather up as many of the rotten fruit as we could carry in our little plastic buckets, make forts out of blankets, tricycles, wagons and whatever else was handy and have a great time throwing smooshy, rotten, overipe apples at each other's forts!

  OMG, what a mess that must have been. What did your parents say abt the mess????
Mikado 08-29-2007, 02:17 PM I honestly cant recall them making a big deal out of it, we had a big cotton mill on one side and Jackie and her family on the other, so no one really saw our backyard, it was pretty much a wilderness!
Brieannas21 08-29-2007, 03:45 PM No I never did that. I camped out in our family room when I had sleepovers  . We would put a tent up in the middle of the room. I grew up in "the country" where we had wild animals wondering about, so my mom wasn't too keen in letting me sleep outside.

 Good thing you didn't sleep outside.
No, we didn't either. We had woods all around us, and there were foxes, coyotes, skunks and all kinds of animals roaming around. I did sleep in the loft of a barn at my best friends house once. There were 6 or 7 of us and we spread blankets over the hay and we roasted marshmellows & hot dogs outside. That was pretty fun.

They say you can discourage animals by a) peeing around your tent ( Animals undestand this as a "keep out" as they "mark" their territories in the same manner ) b) wrap a rough rope around it ( Snakes despise crawling over rope ) and c) storing food high in covered box , hanging from a rope over a high tree branch.....another smart move is NOT to pitch your tent in the dark, over a rattlesnake pit' as my brother and his friends did on a canoeing trip once!

We had Coyote and Fox also, they killed 4 of my rabbits when I was little, very traumatic for a 7 yrold

We actually use to to that in our living room. We had a small backyard in our projects.
JoPol_wannabe 08-29-2007, 07:01 PM I loved to camp out with my friends. I even camped out in our living room a couple times. I remember 2 times when we got scared but only one time we got scared enough we went in to sleep. The first time I had one of my girlfriends out and we were camping out close to the house and all of a sudden this small square thing falls on the tent and it starts moving we looked at each other and said what is that and why is it moving. Then we screamed and then we could hear my brother laughing so I opened the door and found out he throw a big square battery out the window and it was attached to some string. I was so made at him but when I think about it now that was pretty funny. The other time I was kind of embarassed after the fact. I had a bunch of my girlfriends over and we were camping away from the house and the yard and we were sitting in the tent telling ghost stories and all of a sudden we heard this weird noise and we couldn't figure out what it was or where it was coming from. We all got out of the tent to see if any strange animals were around but we didn't see any. Every so often we would keep hearing the noise, it scared us so much that we decided to go sleep in the house. The next morning while we were eatting breakfrest one of my friends started laughing and we were like what and she said I was just thinking about last night and how all of you got scared. Then we were like well so were you and she was like I was just pretending because that noise you heard was me tapping on my lunch box. After I heard that I was so embarassed that I let a noise like that scare me so much to go sleep in my house.
The best camping out memory I have wasn't of me camping out it was of my brother and his 2 friends. It was my brothers 13th birthday and he had 2 of his friends over for a campout and it was like 10:30 at night and one of my brothers friends has 3 sisters and they called and said they were going to come over and get them with squirt guns. So they came over and they had an extra water gun for me and my dad came with us over to the tent. My dad called the boys out of the tent and we were hiding behind trees and when they came out we jumped out of behind the trees and squirted them and no later then 2 minutes they started to run after us so we ran fast I ran into the house and the other girls ran to there car and drove off as fast as they could out of the drive way. That was so much fun my brother has never lived that one down.
KissMyGrits 08-29-2007, 07:38 PM We camped out so many times that I can't even count them.
We also used to use sheets and chairs to make a tent inside the house. Those were the good old day! LOL!

Yeah I did too. I would get the dining room chairs and use the sofa cushions to hold the blankets in place.

Don't you just miss being a kid? I was thinking about it last week, I just wish that I could go back to when I was about 10 or 11, I miss those days.

Oh God yes. The fun we had. And what is interesting is how us kids had imaginations because we DIDN'T HAVE NINTENDO, COMPUTERS, etc. We had to play outside. Inside was abt board games, listening to music, hanging out, making tents indoors... Outside was all abt dodgeball, baseball, kickball, etc. We had this cave-like thing in our backyard. It was a small hill with thick bushes that grew in such a way that it resembled a cave. You could crawl from one end to the other. I remember my friends and I would play indians and pretend to make fires, we had to gather firewood, and fetch water. God, those were the days. Now, it's all abt bills, bills, bills.
That is why I love having a child again, I can be a kid with him and he loves it. He even makes tents in our house. I have no idea where he got the idea, but there he is with the couch cushions, the chairs, the blankets and THE MESS.

LOL I can remember back when I was around 7 or 8, I use to spend the weekends with my aunt (she had no children at the time). And I would tell her that I couldn't wait until I was a grownup and driving. And she would say that when I got older that I'll miss being a kid. And then she said that same thing to me when I was a senior in High School. She said that I'll miss High School and that I should enjoy it while I could. And I would think that it was just crazy talk, I thought that when I would finally move out my parents house that I would have freedom and fun. MAN was I wrong  working and paying bills sucks  I would kill to be a kid again.
Mikado 08-30-2007, 02:22 AM Here, it was hockey in winter on any pond or backyard rink, and street hockey when the ice had melted....Americans just dont know the thrill of pulling 2 nets {and 10 kids scrambling} to the curb, everytime someone yelled "CAR!!!!!!" Oh and we also played baseball, but, that was #2 for Canadian kids in the 60s....no one played basketball at the time, except in gym class! ( I got to be excellent at passing because i couldnt hit the basket with a bazooka, so, Id just pass the ball to those that could! )
Chocoholic 08-30-2007, 09:33 AM I also camped out in my backyard with friends as a kid. It was a lot of fun. My dad would set up a tent and we'd put our sleeping bags in there and we'd sing songs and make s'mores and stuff. We also made the family room tents.
When I was growing up, it was FORBIDDEN to waste nice weather by staying indoors. As long as it wasn't raining or freezing cold we played in our backyards. Now, the kids waste so much of their time playing on the computer, watching TV, or playing video games :( They don't know how to have real fun anymore.
