View Full Version : NHL teams to sport new look
At the 2007 NHL All-Star Game, the National Hockey League announced that, beginning in 2007-08, all teams will be required to wear a new line of jerseys that are designed by Reebok, or RBK as they are commonly known. RBK is the same company that also signed teenage phenom Sidney Crosby to his own personal clothing line last week. What this means is that all of the jerseys will be lighter, more comfortable, and, the league hopes, more fashionable as well. It also means that all 30 teams will look a lot different from what you're used to. Some will opt for some small but subtle changes while others will go all out to create a different look. The general RBK design will feature piping with vertical lines along the sides and the team's logo in the middle, which is what the majority of the teams will be going for. About half the teams have already switched, while the rest won't have their jerseys ready until mid-Sept. As each new design becomes official, I'll post it here to see what you think of them. Here's what each team has come up with so far:

Zebra 3 08-28-2007, 02:13 PM There's no way in hell that bloated NHL will force the Habs to change their look.
Before I start showing you the second group of new NHL uniforms for 2007-08, I should quickly mention that the Buffalo Sabres and Anaheim Ducks were the only NHL teams that radically re-designed their uniforms and logos last season, and, because of that, they are both expected to stick with the same look this year. Here is what they will look like:

http://www.powerplayhockeystl.com/coaches/Chris_Pronger_-_Action.jpg http://www.ocregister.com/newsimages/sports/2007/04/30_ducks1med.jpg Anaheim Ducks
And now, getting back to this season, the next group of new NHL jerseys begins with the Detroit Red Wings, who have wisely chosen to stick with their familiar traditional look, and they look beautiful!. After that, you may want to hide the kids. A lot of what follows is not pretty. See for yourselves:

http://www.icebullshockey.com/chris/nhltol/logos300/sjs.png San Jose Sharks The logo is brand new. The jerseys are still to follow.
Up next, the team that has become infamous for having some of the worst jerseys in all of sports, the Vancouver Canucks, will try again tomorrow to see if they can finally erase that dubious distinction. I'll post the results tomorrow after they become available.
Chelsea 08-28-2007, 06:52 PM I've seen the mockups for the new San Jose unis. They look pretty nice. The only thing I'm not happy about is the secondary "San Jose Sharks" text logo - it really looks junior league-ish.

So Pool Master Seth
Any chance of a hockey pool this year?
Mikado 08-29-2007, 02:51 AM Those unis looked TERRIBLE during the all-star game, and will look worse on 30 whole teams! My Canadiens have worn the SAME uniform ( basically ) since 1917 ( before that they wore variations on a theme ) and NO Habs fan will accept this lousy piping on the "Sainte Flannelle" ( Holy Sweater ), so, the NHL had better leave them ALONE! Garry Betman is the VERY WORST thing that EVER happened to the NHL, he constantly spits in the face of Canadian hockey fans THE MOST LOYAL FANS THE LEAGUE HAS.....And i cant WAIT until he is fired, resigns or any kind of horrible "accident" befalls him......I never thought id miss John Zeigler but, while Zeigler was a lousy administrator, it had more to do with imcompetence, but, BETMAN IS A DANGER TO THE GAMES POPULARITY IN CANADA!!!!! I hate him SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO much, and his CRAPPY uniforms TOO!!!!!

The Human Asshat is responsible for the fall of the league to the point that it's been consigned in the United States to the regional sports networks and Versus - a channel with an average viewership around the same level as Game Show Network.
Mikado 08-29-2007, 03:40 AM Can't even GET Versus here in Canada.........whether thats a good or bad thing, i couldnt say
I seriously doubt that the Habs uniforms will be altered in any way. You have nothing to worry about there. It's a different story in a lot of other places, however, like in Vancouver, where their new jerseys were unveiled today, and Canucks fans and players did not appear to be too pleased with the results. Take a look and try to keep a straight face while doing so. Come on, I dare you!

BETMAN MUST BE STOPPED!!!!!!!!!!!!!
And poor LA Kings fans, after nearly 40 years of terrible unis, they finally had a decent one, only to have Rebok destroy it!!!!

Seth, who or what is The Human Asshat?

that'd be Gary Bettman, NHL President and bigtime basketball fan (his main qualification for running the NHL).
i hate the RBK jerseys - too stupid looking.
i like the new Vancouver colors - they should bring back Johnny Canuck too.
Mikado 08-31-2007, 02:52 PM I think he was actually asking "what IS an asshat"? I have to say, Ive never heard that expression before, either.

As Bettman seems to have his head up there on a 24/7 basis, he needs a special title to convey that fact.

The new Habs jersey was released today. The only the noticeable change is the small NHL logo which was added at the bottom of the v neck to all teams.
Mikado 09-04-2007, 02:03 PM hmmm the necks of the jersey resemble those on the jerseys of the 1940s...well, its not TOO bad ( But, I really cant wait until Rebok loses the contract and the NHL teams can design their OWN jerseys again.......BETMAN MUST BE STOPPED!!!!!!)
I like the Montreal jerseys. They look great! It seems to me that, after looking at those awful monstrosities that the Vancouver Canucks have to wear, teams will now go for a simpler approach, mainly because they don't want to offend (or scare away) their fans. A good example would be the Calgary Flames, who also showed off their new jerseys today and they look fairly nice, too. Here they are:
http://cdn.nhl.com/flames/images/upload/2007/08/jerseyfront_460.jpg
Tomorrow: The Pittsburgh Crosbys have their turn! Don't miss it!
Mikado 09-04-2007, 07:54 PM not TOO bad, but, i dont really like the white jersey, its too plain
Mikado 09-04-2007, 07:57 PM ......and WHAT is with that stupid NHL crest on the neck? put it by the shirt maker's name , like it has been for at least 20 years ( It disgusts me that Montreal is being forced to have their jerseys made by Rebok instead of the Canadian company CCM that INVENTED the modern jersey, and most of the equipment the sport uses, and who made their jerseys for at least 50 years previously )
GARY BETTMAN AND REBOK MUST BE STOPPED!!!
( They arent going to win me over...can you tell? )
Today it was the Pittsburgh Penguins to take their turn in the spotlight. This is what their new uniforms will look like.
http://cdn.nhl.com/penguins/images/upload/2007/09/black_jersey.jpg http://cdn.nhl.com/penguins/images/upload/2007/09/white_jersey.jpg
I'm not crazy about the vertical stripes along the sides but otherwise it looks very nice. Sidney Crosby, RBK's biggest meal ticket, will no doubt be pleased.

He'll just give the league contract to another company - Nike, or Adidas, whoever.

The teams should have the right to have their jerseys made by whoever they choose, and Canadian team jerseys should be made by a Canadian company
The Pitts jerseys dont really look any different than last year, far as I can tell
(Other than those ugly pointed "Jetsons" collars all the teams are being forced to wear! ) And of course, all these jerseys are meant to be tight on the body.........you can tell those #$^%#@^s at Rebok have never tried to play pond hockey in -20 degree weather, where its nice to have a LOOSE jersey that you can wear a sweatshirt and a sweater or 2 underneath!!!! (They just DONT get it!!!!!!!!!)

I HATE Nike more than I hate Bettman and I really hate Bettman. That said, I'll go with Adidas because they own CCM.
Mikado 09-06-2007, 12:20 AM Hey Zebra....What is "Bay City"? Vancouver?? ( I get the impression youre also in Canada, but, I have no idea which city calls itself that .)
James 09-06-2007, 01:13 AM Hey Zebra....What is "Bay City"? Vancouver?? ( I get the impression youre also in Canada, but, I have no idea which city calls itself that .)
Mikado, I've also wondered that myself. I think he once identified himself as being something like two hours south of Toronto, two hours north of Rochester ... or was it Detroit? When I think of "Bay City" I think of the one in Michigan in the northeast part of the Lower Peninsula.
I like the Vancouver colors, but that wordmark has got to go. What were they thinking?
I've always preferred the classic jerseys. The Chicago Blackhawks red jersey is still the best in sports.
Mikado 09-06-2007, 01:20 AM hmmm 2 hours south of Toronto would be about a 1/2 hour south of me......im stumped!

Mikado 09-06-2007, 01:46 AM Isn't that in the middle of Lake Ontario?
Lake Ontario is about 35 mins north of me ;)
Im not sure how long it would take me to drive to TO if I could go straight across the lake, but, it takes me about 1 1/2 hours to drive to TO in light traffic, cause you have to go around it.
Today it was Carolina's turn to unveil their new jerseys and, at first glance, I like them.
http://bp0.blogger.com/_r8tWGVHrjGI/RuBhEpXYNUI/AAAAAAAABzo/DaoD8Iefdrg/s320/carhome.png
It looks like NHL teams are now getting the message: Simpler is better.
(And we have the Canucks to thank for it! :D )
Mikado 09-06-2007, 08:15 PM yeah the design isnt bad but, its still too tight to wear sweaters under........the one I'm really curious to see is the Toronto Maple Laffs ( Hopefully it will be horrendous! )

That happens to be my favourite team!
Besides, I'll wear it no matter what it looks like. Their official unveiling will be next Wed. Only one team will be up before then, and that's the Minnesota Wild, and they're due tomorrow,
Mikado 09-07-2007, 12:39 AM Sorry Sal, nothing personal ;) Actually, I feel everyone can root for whomever they want , its all good........Personally, I hope the Leafs go back to the old 50s/early 60s style jersey and Leaf design permanently (Rather than as a third sweater), it would be very classy, dont you think? ( Just dont ask me to root for them  )

It's OK, I understand now. :)
I love the '60s look as well, and I'm a big believer in maintaining history and tradition, especially among the Original 6, but I wouldn't expect too many changes from what they have now. Besides, I think some teams, like for instance Carolina or Calgary, might have gone for a different look if they so desired, and that would have fine, but, I think Vancouver might have scared them off. So I would expect from the Leafs the same look as what they have now. Now for a team like the Minnesota Wild that hasn't been around that long, tradition isn't a factor, so any change would be welcome, as long as its not overdone and hideous. They're up today and I'll have their uniform up later this evening. See you then.
Mikado 09-07-2007, 01:29 PM Well Sal, i saw the leafs new practice uni today, and man.....if the regular uni looks anything like that.....well, lets just say the Leafs would be welcome into the CFL very easily!
Mikado 09-07-2007, 01:35 PM I think Vancouver might have scared them off.
 Yeah, those are just horrrrrrrrrrrrrrible (Mind you Vanc has a history of terrible jerseys)....what is really funny is the look on the players faces when they were revealed , they look as disgusted as the fans in the stands do!
( btw, I wasnt kidding, I really DID burst out laughing when i saw them )
How I dream of the day we can get our NHL back from Bettman...he must be stopped!!!
Mikado 09-07-2007, 01:38 PM Hey Sal....when you get to be NHL commissioner....can you use an assistant? between us we could make sure to put Canadian concerns back to the forefront. ;)
Hey Sal....when you get to be NHL commissioner....can you use an assistant? between us we could make sure to put Canadian concerns back to the forefront. ;)
I seem to remember that the NHL is supposed to have 3 main offices from which they conduct business: Toronto, Montreal, and New York. What I would like to do is work from the Toronto office, Mikado would handle the Montreal office, and Wayne Gretzky would operate from New York. I think between the 3 of us we should be able to fix the NHL.
One problem that would be addressed would be the new jerseys. I would put in a couple of specific rules regarding jerseys and logos that would look like this:
1. Once you make a change, you have to stick with it for at least 5 years. All changes would have to be approved by the Commissioner and his assistants.
2. Home teams wear white, road teams wear dark.
3. Use only horizontal stripes instead of vertical or diagonal.
4. No more than two colours can be used.
5. Regarding logos: If I can't draw it, you can't use it!
Rule #5 would apply for teams like the Minnesota Wild. I have no idea what their logo is supposed to look like. See if you can figure it out for yourself. Their new jerseys came out today. Here they are:
http://bp1.blogger.com/_r8tWGVHrjGI/RuF58pXYNZI/AAAAAAAAB0o/eoiFlOwoGAs/s320/unveil4.jpg
I like the dark, retro-style uniform. I don't know why they couldn't have used a similiar model for the white uniforms. Oh well...it's their loss.
Mikado 09-07-2007, 07:46 PM i think both are ok......as for your rules for the unis, for the most part i agree, except for the dark jerseys on the road.....I take it youre under 40 but, when i was a kid the dark jerseys WERE the home jerseys ( Most of Montreals Stanley cup pics are in the red unis cause that WAS the home sweater, and should stay the home sweater, in my opinion ) the change to white sweaters at home came around 1970 ( i forget the exact year....too lazy to look it up  ), when the NHL decided that the dark and white jerseys for oppposing teams would be easier to distinguish on TV...now, with TV universally in colour, this is an outdated idea, and i'm happy to see my Habs in Red again! ( the "white" jerseys were created by Montreal in the 40s to wear when they were visiting the Detroit Red Wings and Chicago Black Hawks who also wore unis that were predominantly red.....later , other NHL teams created white unis of their own. ) ps. I prefer the "retro" 1945 Montreal white jersey to the regular one
You're right, it was 1970 when they made the switch. I heard that it was because the team trainers had a hard time washing the white jerseys on the road all the time since it was easier for dirt and stains to show up on the white jerseys than on the dark, or something like that.
Anyway, whenever I see a game that involves one of the Original 6 teams, I don't mind them wearing dark at home because it does take you back to the old days, but, with some of the newer teams (complete with their ugly logos), if you don't see them that often, it's hard to tell who they are or even who they're playing against. In their case, seeing them wear white at home just makes it easier for everyone to follow. And since we're all used to this system which is used in all sports, we might as well stick with it, except on special occasions like Opening Night, retirement ceremonies for certain players, the Hall Of Fame Game in Toronto in November, and all Original 6 meetings vs each other. In that case, making the switch adds more class to the evening. But every night? Sorry, but it's not for me.
Zebra 3 09-08-2007, 01:21 PM If the NHL ever gets rid of the white vs. dark jerseys is the day I stop watching - seriously.
Mikado 09-09-2007, 02:01 AM If the NHL ever gets rid of the white vs. dark jerseys is the day I stop watching - seriously.
Ill stop watching the day they use those rediculous nets with the giant corners that they experimented with...because idiot Bettman thinks hockey needs more scoring, rather than LESS TEAMS!!!!!
The big day has finally arrived! The Maple Leafs today finally unveiled their new uniforms and they look very nice. Here they are:
http://bp3.blogger.com/_r8tWGVHrjGI/RuhqcBeV76I/AAAAAAAAB_0/f_TK287HnFc/s320/leafsmodel.jpg
The happy models are Darcy Tucker, Tomas Kaberle, and new Leaf Jason Blake.
At first glance, they might seem to look very plain: no frills, no changes. That's fine with me. The Leaf uniform, like many of the older teams, should not be messed with in any way and I was afraid that it might have been changed in some way to appease the RBK braintrust but, thankfully, saner heads prevailed somewhere. My verdict: a big thumbs up!
On the other hand, speaking of messes, Colorado also unveiled their uniforms today and the result is not very pleasant to the eyes:

I guess I can relax now. Goodnight folks!
