View Full Version : For Women Only: Which man from One Day at a Time do you prefer?
I must say Ed Cooper! Ed was great. He was the best father that two girls could have. He was also a good husband despite his and Ann's problems. Ed was a REAL man: masculine, rugged, sure of himself, rock-hard body, etc. I LOVED Ed! Ed made the other men look like wimps.
I'd go with Ed, he was a handsome man too.
catlover79 08-28-2007, 10:24 PM David Kane was a very sweet guy - I kind of like teddy bear guys. On the down side, he was a bit of a wimp and let Ann walk all over him. I would like to see the episode where David returns years later for a visit, a new man. That sounds interesting.
Ireneparalegal 08-28-2007, 10:27 PM I will be in the minority here: Sam Royer. I hated the fact the writers had to make him Barbara's father-in-law. Why not just bring him on in a normal fashion.

That particular episode was in the 1980-1981 season when David came back. It was a good episode and it brought a full closure of the David-Ann relationship. You can see both characters have grown up and not so much in a co-dependent mode like it was in the first season of the show when he was on.

It was something about Sam Royer Irene that irked me and it was his lack of validation towards Ann at times. I think if there were more storylines of their relationship because there was a lot of potential there after the marriage but the show was on its last legs and Bonnie stated she was tired and ready to move on. Out of all the wedding on ODAT it was always some strange twist how they met and not in a normal fashion.

True. I feel like the writers were desperate to hurry up and get Ann hooked up because now she was alone since her two daughters were adults and married. I like his character and I know it would have worked better had they brought him in "earlier" and not in that fashion.

To me that relationship was not properly developed for viewers to get used and know. Not enough stories about their courtship. He was introduced one episode and in the same episode they slept together, a few episodes later he proposed to her but not seeing them in between that together, took a trip together and got married. Plus that season I can they were running out of ideas because it was full of change and transition for everyone.
Already Gone 08-29-2007, 11:46 AM Well, I've always liked Howard Hesseman on any show or movie that he's in so i'm choosing Sam. He should have been introduced earlier and not as Mark's father, just as a new love interest for Ann. That I agree with.
They could have made his character a new tenant or maybe a former client.

Well said. You should have been a writer. :D

I would like the character to be a new tenant. That would had made good comedy especially with Schneider in the building. He was always in love with Ann but know that nothing was going to come out of it.
mstewart 08-29-2007, 04:55 PM You know another male interest Ann was romantically linked with and surprise that he was not mentioned. Nick Handris, Alex's father and Ann's business partner, was not mentioned as which man. I was glad that the relationship did not turn into a long term one. I did not see romantic chemistry between Ron Rifkin and Bonnie Franklin. Plus I could not stand the character of Nick. If I had a choice on who I liked Ann with between him and Sam it would be Sam. It was just the way the writers handled the relationship and the audience did not get a chance to know Sam. Plus the final season he was not in a lot of episodes.
I did see compatibility between her and Ed but their relationship was always at each other's throats. The episode with Barbara's wedding they did share a touching moment and that was moving.

I didn't see chemistry either, but even if there was, I would rather have Ann dump him then for us to be stuck with that awful, annoying, nasal-whining character ALEX. :puke:

Did anyone knew what actually happened on why Ron Rifkin did not come back the following season???
This whole thing with Ann being unofficial guardian of Alex was a bit farfetched.
That was wild how we got to see, unfortunately, the relationship between Nick and Ann develop and progress through the season but her and Sam there were a lot of missing pieces that the writers did not give us.
Now talking about Nick I would preferred Sam over him. My ultimate choice would be Ed.

I can't recall. I think he was killed in an accident, no? I haven't seen the series in a long time. I am sure someone here can inform us.

Nick was killed by a drunk driver.
What I was wondering what happened why Ron Rifkin was written out of the show??? I have a feeling that many did not see the chemistry between him and Bonnie Franklin.
You know Irene, side topic, I wish there were more storylines with Ann and Francine (Shelley Fabares). Shelley was good and funny in that role. The times together the comedy between them was good.
I don't remember the scene between Ed and Ann at Barbara's wedding. The only thing I recall is Ed walking Barbara down the aisle. What happened in the scene between him and Ann?

The scene was at the apartment when they briefly reminsced about their years together and realized it was not that bad. After a somewhat brief embraced Julie came out and said, "Remember mom he is a married man." Remember Ed had remarried.

Thank you for that info.
I too wish there was more interaction with Francine. She was a breath of fresh air whenever she was in an episode.

Shelley Fabares was great and funny in that role. I liked her better as Francine than I did in Coach. The character she played on Coach was somewhat dull. She had some great moments on the show in the early seasons but the last two she didn't do as much with the role.
I always had a crush on Shelley Fabares but on Coach I hated that frizzy hairstyle and I was glad in the last season and a half she wore it straight.

Thank you :) That trait comes from my father. He used to be the editor of one of our local newspapers.
The Sam character definitely needed to be developed more. Going with the tenant idea, I think maybe they could have made him a classmate of Ann's from high school or maybe he was the big brother of one of her friends.
Maybe they dated a few times in high school and they lost touch because he had to
move with his family, for whatever reason.
Bonniegirl 06-05-2015, 01:45 PM ED, ED, ED, ED!!!! I TOTALLY voted for Ed!
Bonniegirl 05-24-2018, 12:33 AM WHAT???? What was this??? Why didn't I protest and complain that Max wasn't in the poll ????? And do a write in vote for him?? Maybe at the time I read this thread Antenna hadn't gotten to Season 5 and I didn't see Max yet????
