'Dunkin' Donuts Trims Its Fat
Chain Develops Alternative Cooking Oil, Reformulates 50 Items

Boston -- Could Dunkin' Donuts be getting a healthier image?
The doughnut chain is announcing that its menu will be "zero grams trans fat" by mid-October in all of its U.S. restaurants.
It's developed an alternative cooking oil, and reformulated more than 50 menu items -- doughnuts included.
But the "zero grams trans fat" label won't mean there are literally no trans fats. Under federal regulations, food labels can say "zero grams trans fat" if there's less than 1/2 gram per serving.
Still, a nutrition advocacy group is welcoming the addition of Dunkin' Donuts to the list of restaurant chains that have shifted away from trans fat.
A spokesman for the Center for Science in the Public Interest said, "If Dunkin' Donuts can do that, anyone can." But he points out that the doughnuts are still "mostly white flour, sugar and fat."
