ORIGINAL "Law & Order" star Michael Moriarty is endorsing Fred Thompson for president, according to reports.

The odd-ball actor who played Ben Stone, the first assistant DA, on the hit series is saying that he's voting for fellow "L&O" star Thompson because Thompson is against abortion.

"I will personally vote for Mr. Fred Thompson and help his campaign as best I can," the actor told a North Carolina newspaper over the weekend.

"I don't believe his entrance into this campaign ever carried enough pro-life commitment to do the job that has to be done," Moriarty says, referring to his belief that Roe v. Wade should be overturned.

But no other candidate was sufficiently anti-abortion to appeal to him, the actor said.

As much as I liked Michael Moriarty's character Ben Stone, and as much as I respect his work as an actor, I think the guy is a quack. Don't get me wrong, I am pro-life but it seems to be an obsession with him. Since the whole Janet Reno thing back in 1993-94, he's been off his rocker.

Fred is suppose to officially declare next week. I for one think it is great.... I dunno if he would carry enough to make the presidental nomination (and I would support him for that) but even if he didn't, he would make a fantastic second on any ticket the GOP could come up with... I think he would add some balance to some of the more moderate hopefuls running right now.

I'm retracting my original statement - now that Michael Moriarty has quit drinking and I am now reading his columns, he makes a lot more sense now. He is on fire for his staunch pro-life, conservative stance and doesn't care what others think about it. I've also written to him (and gotten his autograph) and he has treated me with the utmost respect. So I take back that earlier comment.
