A teensy bit off the subject (but not much!) ---what's your favorite thing ever done by Mary Tyler Moore? Mine was seeing her in "Ordinary People". It was great seeing her do something so out of character, playing the cold and contained Beth who I thought secretly always blamed Conrad. And she played the part so magnificently. One more reason I really like Mary!

Ordinary People - She played that part down to a science. Wow I did not know what a powerful actress MTM is until she played that role.

I did enjoy the variety hour she attempted in 1978-79. It came on when the format was dead. If it had came on in the late 60s to early 70s I believe she would had made a good go at it.

Of course, without mentioned Laura Petrie. I liked MTM as Laura Petrie better than Mary Richards. Mary put a lot into Laura Petrie and broke the TV wife sitcom where she was not perfect and always smiles and cheery. Laura had emotions, insecurity and she was zany without being over the top with it. Her and Dick Van Dyke were a great TV married couple and one of the best ever beside Desi and Lucy.

MTM's performance in Ordinary People knocked me out - WOW!! She made an already powerful film even more powerful.

As much as i loved Laura Petrie, I loved her most as the more mature and independant Marry Richards on what i think is still THE benchmark series about women The Mary Tyler Moore Show

Of course, you can just look at my avatar and tell, but I really think MTM shined as Laura Petrie, in ways she never quite did again. I hesitate to say that because of my love for TMTMS. But I think through Laura Petrie, she effortlessly showed us sweetness, stregnth, loyalty, courage, humor, intensity, charm, talent, and yes, sexiness.
The character of Laura Petrie has never been duplicated by any other actress.
