View Full Version : Would you believe???...........THINGS PEOPLE USED TO BELIEVE, BUT NO LONGER DO

The idea here is to discuss things people used to believe in before science and technology brought us the World of today ( They have to be true! )

Would you believe?.......

(medical)
-In the dark ages, people thought that a necklace made of strung-up worms, would cure a sore throat!

-If the necklace didnt do the trick, you would might have tried eating a worm soup or stew ( kind of a higher dose of medicine, I guess! )

-Even as recently as Victorian times, it was believed diseases were caused by "bad smells" and terrible diseases like the plague, were treated by spreading flowers and burning tar, to mask said smells!

-Another mistake made by London's Drs during the plague epidemics, was the belief that dogs and cats spread the plague, and they were slaughtered by the 1000s.......the very animals that could have destroyed the rats who were the actual carriers of the fleas, that caused the plague.

(genetics)
At one time, it was widely believed that having twins meant that a man's wife was cheating on him, if they were identical twins, it was believed that the man's wife was cheating on him, with his brother! (Having twins was not considered a happy event)

(Science and tech)
It was once believed that the dinosaurs were wiped out by "Noah's flood".
(Apparently they were too large for the ark)

Can you add some more outdated beliefs?

Going back there was the belief that

the world was flat
the sun revolved around the earth

and one that still floats around to this day... the belief that the Toronto Maple Leafs will ever win the Stanley Cup again:lol:

That genetics one is crazy!!!!

I read a book abt how people in the "dark ages" thought they could conceive a baby boy by having sex during a full moon, or the wife getting drunk prior to trying to conceive, and some other stupid things. Or was it getting the wife drunk WHILE there was a full moon?

the way it was explained was, that if a woman was having 2 babies, she was obviously having sex with 2 men....and if the babies looked alike, then the other Father must be in the immediate family! (Boy, Imagine the sibling rivalries THAT must have caused! )

Imagine the kind of fuss you'd have had over triplets or quintuplets!

-In Medieval times, it was believed that the stars and heavens were held up by crystal spheres and pushed along by angels. ( They honestly believed that )

-it was believed that natural circular motion was only found in space ( The Earth was static ( it wasthe Sun that moved ) and things fell, in a straight line )

-Medieval "Alchemists" spent centuries trying to produce a "Philosopher's stone" a catalyst that could supposedly turn base metals such as lead, into gold....they never succeded!

People thought tomatoes were poisonous until 1820 -- it had to do with the odor that the leaves gave off.

I just have to say - thank god I never lived in medieval times. Can you imagine the constant horrible odors during that time? Yeech.

There *is* a remote chance that a bolt of lightning could actually come through an open window. It's more likely though for lightning to come via power lines in terms of in-house lightning

As for thunder: It comes inside your house as it is, even with all the doors and windows shut. Thunder is SOUND WAVES, which easily penetrate nearly all types of houses.

This can actually be done now. The TRIUMF Particle accelerator can change the molecular structure of lead or any element and change it to gold. However there are a couple drawbacks

1. it costs 10 times more $ to convert lead to gold than the gold is worth
2. the gold is radioactive

Where is this accellerator and wonder of physics you ask? The University of British Columbia

The first Emperor of China, Qin Shi Huang: Founder of Qin Dynasty (260 B.C. to 210 B.C.), was desperate to find the key to immortality, that is, he literally wanted to find a way to live forever! To that end, his advisors had him take repeated doses of the element mercury (It was believed at the time that mercury increased longevity.). While he thought he was extending his life, we now know that he was actually poisoning himself and likely cut his life short by several years!

Mikado

To follow up on the last post, after his death, The first Emperor of China, Qin Shi Huang was burried in a giant tomb under an artificial mountain ( The tomb was protected by an entire army of Terracotta warriors ). In the very depths of the tomb, the Emperors body is said to lie in a replica of his kingdom (China) made of precious materials and jewels, with the rivers made of flowing mercury in throughs ( Perhaps thinking that they might finally give him the immortality benefit that he thought mercury would give him in life!* )

*He died of swallowing mercury pills, made by his court scientists and doctors, which contained the liquid metal. The "theory," devised by alchemists, was that if mercury could even absorb gold, then if eaten, it would give that person its own powers, making him immortal.

Would you believe........ Muslims arent the only ones who prayed while facing east..........

In the early 1870s, not long after after the 1867 Confederation, the new provincial gvmt of Ontario decreed new standards for church lots:

Churches in late 19th Century had to face in an east-west direction, the doors facing west, and the congregation facing the east.
The same went for the attached cemetaries, the regulations for which were:
Tombstones should be on the west side of the plot, bodies burried so that they would face east, and "could rise facing the dawn on the day of Judgement"!!!

Heres a really creepy one.........a strange ceremony from rural Britain and Scotland, the SIN EATER, a man who litterally ate his lunch off a dead man's chest!!!

Here is the "job description" from the TV show History's Worst Jobs:
http://www.channel4.com/history/microsites/W/worstjobs/stuart2.html

As a sin eater, you will be responsible for consuming the evil and sins contained within the corpses of normal decent folk. When one of the godly community pops their clogs without getting the chance to own up to their wrongdoings, the sin gets trapped inside. As long as those bad things remain in there, St Peter's going to turn that individual away.

This position involves going to the house of such a dead person and sitting down to a bread and beer supper served up on the bare chest of the dearly departed. The idea is that the sins of the dead are absorbed by the bread. So as you tuck in, you get to fill up on evil and so cleanse the stiff. You'll get a sixpence for your trouble, but don't expect to make many friends. And you'd better make yourself scarce when any witch-finding commissions come to town as you'll be one of the first on their list.

Death Superstitions
• A bird in the house is a sign of a death.
• If the person was evil, weeds will grow.
• Pregnant women should not attend funerals.
• If you hear foot steps behind you on Halloween night, don't look back. It may be the dead following you. Turning back could mean that you will very soon join the dead behind you.

Speaking of chocolate, it started out quite differently than the chocolate we know today:

Before chocolate was a sweet candy, it was a spicy drink. Some of the earliest known chocolate drinkers were the ancient Maya and Aztecs of Mesoamerica.
They ground cacao seeds into a paste that, when mixed with water, corn and peppers then fermented, made a frothy, rather bitter beverage called Xocolatl.
Drinking chocolate was an important part of life for the Classic Period Maya and the Aztecs.

Optical theory:
It was once believed that your eyes sent out rays of light that litterally "lit up" any scene you were looking at ( In actuality, its the other way around, in that the things you look at send rays of light to your eyes )

Dr Edmund Halley ( of the comet fame ) once claimed that the Earth was hollow:
Dr. Edmund Halley, Astronomer Royal for England in the 18th century, thought that beneath its 500-mi.-thick crust, the earth was hollow. In the hollow, he said, were 3 planets.
And he wasnt the only one:
Leonard Euler, an 18th-century mathematical genius, also thought that the earth was hollow. He maintained that it was inhabited and had a central sun.

In my favorite novel, Christy (by Catherine Marshall), a trephine operation is performed. But it has nothing to do with evil spirits - the man had been knocked out when a tree fell on him. Someone else mentioned The Sin Eater...that story was made into a novel called The Last Sin Eater, written by Francine Rivers. It was also made into a movie last year starring Henry Thomas and Louise Fletcher. One more connection - the TV series Christy and The Last Sin Eater movie both featured actor Stewart Finley-McLennan. On Christy, he was the doctor who performed the trephine!!

There was also another abt a geoduck in Oregon. that one cracked me up because of the fact that "oyster" like thing, resembles a...well, let's just say, it resembles a man's private part, very much so!!! and Mike Rowe was having a field day with that fact.

anyway....back to the original subject-

people used to believe that evil spirits would land on the roofs of houses; and enter the house through it. That's why they started putting peaked roofs on houses-so they'd slide off.

Really? I never heard that before. Very interesting. ;) I thought it was so the rain would slide down the roofs rather than make a pool on top of the house and cause the roof to collapse.

Supposedly, if a woman "douched" with Sprite, it would prevent pregnancy. One of the stupidest ideas in the world!!!!

IT WAS ONCE BELIEVED THAT:

- you should cover a mirror in a thunderstorm because they were thought to attract lightning!

- an onion cut in half and placed under the bed of a sick person would draw off fever and poisons.

- a red ribbon should be placed on a child who has been sick to keep the illness from returning.

-a spider was a repellent against plague when worn around the neck in a walnut shell.

Weirdness Bonus
In France, socialites known as the quatorziens (fourteeners) once made themselves available as 14th guests to keep a dinner party from an unlucky fate.
