I noticed a weird goof in this episode. When Gilligan and Ginger are talking about her joining his circus act, and the scene begins to dissolve into the next scene, they aren't standing in the same place as they were during the last line of the scene! Gilligan speaks and then it cuts to him looking at her and smiling and she has changed positions! I also noticed that this episode runs a bit shorter than the others in the set. Could this have been cut or is it simply a mistake?

It is a weird goof, but it isn't edited. Having seen it originally, and having watched the reruns every afternoon for the whole of the 1970's, I think I would have noticed if any dialogue was missing.

What I think happened is that they needed a moment's extra footage to do the transition to the scene with the Howell's and just spliced it in thinking no one would notice. Thanks to frame-by-frame advance on the DVD you can actually study it----once they've "changed positions" they don't even appear to be in character. Bob Denver is looking offstage and Tina Louise has her eyes closed. That seems to suggest it's just footage from when they were standing and waiting on their marks.

At normal speed it's hard to catch...I sure never noticed it before.:)

I had picked that up and it definitely added to my paranoia over edited episodes. There are too many moments in other episodes where dialogue would normally have a scene associated with it. And I seem to recall moments not on the DVD's. I swear black and blue in "Gilligans Living Doll" I recall Mary Ann teaching the robot to sing "This is the way we wash our clothes". I back it up with the scene at the end of the episode when the robot starts reciting the information on its audio tape, it mentions it.
Does anyone else have these recollections? Or is it as I fear...just me.

On the season two DVD's, most of the episodes run about 25:20. But some episodes are a little shorter, like 24:45 or so. I don't know if some episodes ended up just being a little bit shorter, or if they made small cuts in the episodes on the DVD. It wouldn't surprise me if the shorter episodes have cuts/edits to them.

In FEED THE KITTY, during the opening scene the skipper tells Gilligan- "So there's writing on the boards". Right after he says that, the scene cuts quick like they cut off the rest of what he had to say. I don't know if this indicates an edit in the episode, but it looks a little fishy.

The final scene of this episode (the part where they gather around and listen to the news on the radio) seems to have a quick start, like the first few seconds were cut off. The rest of the episode looks OK, hard to tell if anything else was cut. Judging by the running time of the episode on the DVD, about 15 seconds might have been cut from it. My guess is that subtle cuts were made to some of the episodes on the DVD. The running times of the episodes on the DVD are not consistent, that is for sure. The edits are hard to notice unless you're watching very close or are an expert on the episodes. Someone who knows all the episodes backwards and forwards could likely tell where the edits are.

Another observation on Gilligans Living Doll: It's the skipper who shows the robot how they wash their clothes, not Mary Ann. So the skipper would have been the one to tell the robot- this is the way we wash our clothes. Mary Ann taught the robot how to sweep with the broom. Ginger taught the robot how to wash the dishes.

Watch the skipper during the final scene where they are listening to the news on the radio. He does react when they hear the robot say- this is the way we wash our clothes. But the scene where he's teaching the robot how to wash the clothes looks unedited to me. If anything was cut in this episode, I would say it's in the beginning of that final scene.

In support of Warner Brothers, I have other TV shows from them on DVD and they seem to be pretty good in putting uncut episodes on the discs. Perhaps the Gilligan episodes are uncut also, but the inconsistent running times of the episodes and other observations leave me a little skeptical.

What I think happened is that you are remembering other events that have similar elements. First---Mary Ann, of course, teaches the robot to sweep (this-is-the-way-we-sweep-the-floor). Second, in "Castaways Pictures Presents," Mary Anne sings "Here we go gathering nuts in May" to the exact same tune as "This is the way we..." Lastly, in "And Then There Were None" and "The Second Ginger Grant," much is made of Mary Ann being responsible for washing and hanging out the clothes to dry.

In the robot episode, though, it really is the Skipper who shows him how to wash clothes.

Thanks for trying to allay my fears Bonsai, but I can definitely see Mary Ann wanting to make the whole washing clothes experience better for the robot by teaching him the little ditty. It might be because I was a little older during season 3 but there are many episodes than the other seasons that seem, shall I say, suspicious.
