View Full Version : the most over hyped movies, ever waichingliu81 08-18-2007, 08:12 AM what are the most overhyped and over rated movies, according to you and why? TJL 08-18-2007, 08:50 AM Off the top of my head, The Matrix movies. The first one was very good, but the 2nd and 3rd were a big letdown. Never do a trilogy when you don't know what's going to happen in parts 2 and 3. ;) Brian Damage 08-18-2007, 09:09 AM Good Topic I'd say the HarrY Potter movies. I just never got the fascination with the books or the movies. ABlairican Pie 08-18-2007, 10:56 PM Bratz 4, 5, and 6. Oh yeah, they haven't made 2 and 3 yet. catlover79 08-19-2007, 12:43 AM American Beauty - to this day, that is the only movie I've ever seen at the theater where I walked out before it was over. I still think it's one of the most overrated movies of the last 25-30 years. Nighthawk76 08-19-2007, 12:45 AM American Beauty - to this day, that is the only movie I've ever seen at the theater where I walked out before it was over. I still think it's one of the most overrated movies of the last 25-30 years. You didn't like American Beauty, Monika? I thought that movie was amazing. catlover79 08-19-2007, 12:51 AM You didn't like American Beauty, Monika? I thought that movie was amazing. I just never got into it - almost everyone else I knew who saw it loved it. I kept saying, "Did we see the same movie??" On the flip side - I just loved The Majestic, and it got horrible reviews and flopped at the box office. The one positive review on the movie I read was from Roger Ebert. So to this day, I think Roger and I were the only people who enjoyed The Majestic. Ireneparalegal 08-19-2007, 12:54 AM Good Topic I'd say the HarrY Potter movies. I just never got the fascination with the books or the movies. Indeed, a good thread idea. And I so agree with you Brian. I FRIGGIN' HATE THE WHOLE HARRY POTTER CRAZE! WTF???? Let me add any Steven Seagall movies. catlover79 08-19-2007, 12:58 AM Indeed, a good thread idea. And I so agree with you Brian. I FRIGGIN' HATE THE WHOLE HARRY POTTER CRAZE! WTF???? Let me add any Steven Seagall movies. Not to mention anything starring Jean Claude Van Damme and/or Dennis Rodman. puke: Ireneparalegal 08-19-2007, 12:59 AM Not to mention anything starring Jean Claude Van Damme and/or Dennis Rodman. puke: Or George Clooney and whatshisname, not Ben Affleck, the other dude he hangs out with...? Let me add DREAMGIRLS LORD OF THE RINGS OCEAN'S ELEVEN, TWELVE, THIRTEEN, FOURTEEN, FIFTEEN, ONE HUNDRED... catlover79 08-19-2007, 01:01 AM Or George Clooney and whatshisname, not Ben Affleck, the other dude he hangs out with...? Let me add DREAMGIRLS LORD OF THE RINGS OCEAN'S ELEVEN, TWELVE, THIRTEEN, FOURTEEN, FIFTEEN, ONE HUNDRED... Matt Damon. How could we forget to add your favorite, Jennifer Lopez? With the exception of Selena, almost everything else she has starred in is trash. Ireneparalegal 08-19-2007, 01:03 AM Matt Damon. How could we forget to add your favorite, Jennifer Lopez? With the exception of Selena, almost everything else she has starred in is trash. Thank you, Matt Damon. HALLELUJAH!!!!!! AMEN TO THAT MY SISTER! I agree, Selena was awesome. The rest, I wouldn't use for cat litter, what an insult to the cat. catlover79 08-19-2007, 01:07 AM Thank you, Matt Damon. HALLELUJAH!!!!!! AMEN TO THAT MY SISTER! I agree, Selena was awesome. The rest, I wouldn't use for cat litter, what an insult to the cat. A few years ago, my sister and I went on a girls movie night and couldn't decide if we wanted to see Maid in Manhattan or Two Weeks' Notice. I recall we flipped a coin and MIM won the toss. That movie was so cheesy and derivative - plus Jennifer Lopez and Ralph Fiennes had absolutely no chemistry together. They are one of the most unconvincing screen couples in recent memory. Months later I rented Two Weeks' Notice when it came to DVD. That one was no great shakes either, but at least it was an improvement over MIM. You reminded me of that Xanadu and Two of a Kind thread...which is worst? catlover79 08-19-2007, 01:20 AM You reminded me of that Xanadu and Two of a Kind thread...which is worst? Now that I've seen both - Two of a Kind was much, MUCH worse than Xanadu. That flick was HORRIBLE!! puke: Ireneparalegal 08-19-2007, 01:23 AM And I remember when Xanadu was being filmed, the hype over this new Olivia Newton-John movie was everywhere. Nighthawk76 08-19-2007, 06:10 PM I just never got into it - almost everyone else I knew who saw it loved it. I think that we all have movies that we love that critics hated and that no one went to see. For me it would be 1998's Snake Eyes directed by Brian De Palma and starring Nicholas Cage and Gary Sinese. Most critics gave it really bad reviews (Michael Willimington of the Chicago Tribune liked it though) and it only made about 50 million at the box office. I love it, however. Zebra 3 08-19-2007, 06:27 PM Some I find overhyped and/or overrated: - Citizen Kane ('41) - The Lord of the Rings trilogy - Pulp Fiction ('94) - Saving Private Ryan ('98) - Titanic ('97) comedyfreak 08-19-2007, 07:36 PM Brokeback Mountain-That's all anyone use to talk about, I got tired of hearing about it, and it wasn't an Oscar material movie. Ireneparalegal 08-20-2007, 01:49 AM The Star Wars movies Classicshowsgurl15 08-20-2007, 04:10 AM Good Topic I'd say the HarrY Potter movies. I just never got the fascination with the books or the movies. I agree with you. The Harry Potter movies are so popular, but i'm not that interested in them. I read one book, but didn't like it very much. I saw the first movie and didn't like that very much either. waichingliu81 08-20-2007, 01:36 PM Off the top of my head, The Matrix movies. The first one was very good, but the 2nd and 3rd were a big letdown. Never do a trilogy when you don't know what's going to happen in parts 2 and 3. ;) hated the matrix trilogy. as far as i saw it, the movies were the same as the last and they were not that much different from one another, in fact, i don't like any film that keanu reeves starred in waichingliu81 08-20-2007, 01:42 PM Good Topic I'd say the HarrY Potter movies. I just never got the fascination with the books or the movies. i never understood the hype surrounding harry potter either. we all know that woman author JK rowling has made millions of dollars/pounds but still, despite all the acclaim and adulation it has received, some people seem to forget that not everyone likes harry potter. or LoTR for that matter waichingliu81 08-20-2007, 01:44 PM Not to mention anything starring Jean Claude Van Damme and/or Dennis Rodman. puke: didn't those two star in some cheesy action movie together? and mickey rouke was in it, wasn't he? waichingliu81 08-20-2007, 01:47 PM Matt Damon. How could we forget to add your favorite, Jennifer Lopez? With the exception of Selena, almost everything else she has starred in is trash. speaking of matt damon that whole bourne identity series where he plays jason bourne. a version of james bond. yawn. waichingliu81 08-20-2007, 01:52 PM charlie's angels and charlie's angels: full throttle- what a load of crap. yes they were remakes but i remembered when they first came out, so much attention and hype was given to these two films- and yet when i saw both of them i thought to myself 'god, they screwed the francise up'. they were two of the worst films i have ever had the misfortune to sit through. thank god, they were on tv and that i didn't purchase them on dvd Number 9 Dream 08-20-2007, 02:39 PM The Matrix, totally...I really couldn't stand those movies (but was dragged in to it by friends who were obsessed!) I thought they were so boring! And while I enjoy Harry Potter to an extent, I've always liked the books more than the movies. I'm not overly fanatical about them like some people are. Ireneparalegal 08-20-2007, 04:32 PM charlie's angels and charlie's angels: full throttle- what a load of crap. yes they were remakes but i remembered when they first came out, so much attention and hype was given to these two films- and yet when i saw both of them i thought to myself 'god, they screwed the francise up'. they were two of the worst films i have ever had the misfortune to sit through. thank god, they were on tv and that i didn't purchase them on dvd Any remake: :puke: With the exception of the Brady Bunch movies. I think movie makers saw the popularity of the Brady Bunch movies and thought, "Hey, let's remake all the classics." Bad idea. Also any movie with Ben Stiller seems to get a lot of hype. waichingliu81 08-21-2007, 08:38 AM Some I find overhyped and/or overrated: - Citizen Kane ('41) - The Lord of the Rings trilogy - Pulp Fiction ('94) - Saving Private Ryan ('98) - Titanic ('97) lord of the rings i couldn't stand whatsoever. pulp fiction was okay but the fact that this film was shown on tv every god damn year in the UK, meant i have to avoid watching it because i've seen it twice, which for me is enough. saving private ryan, i don't like war films at all. cannot stand them. and titanic, it was so cheesy and so sickly. at least the films that kate winslet and leo di caprio made afterwards were better than this mindless romantic dirge waichingliu81 08-21-2007, 08:44 AM Brokeback Mountain-That's all anyone use to talk about, I got tired of hearing about it, and it wasn't an Oscar material movie. yeah i agree with you on this. the story wasn't all that ground breaking and the acting left a lot to be desired and i too was bored by the whole hype brokeback mountain received. i was glad that crash- even though that film received mixed reviews from both the viewers and film critics- won the best film category i think over brokeback mountain that year in the oscars. i'm guessing it was 2004, but i might be wrong on this waichingliu81 08-21-2007, 08:48 AM Any remake: :puke: With the exception of the Brady Bunch movies. I think movie makers saw the popularity of the Brady Bunch movies and thought, "Hey, let's remake all the classics." Bad idea. Also any movie with Ben Stiller seems to get a lot of hype. i liked dodgeball though- very funny and mystery men- very underrated. along came polly was the pits, even though it also starred jennifer aniston eltonfan80 08-21-2007, 10:38 AM You didn't like American Beauty, Monika? I thought that movie was amazing. i loved that movie it was so good Rhiannon 08-21-2007, 07:53 PM Blades of Glory waichingliu81 08-22-2007, 04:48 AM those so-called teen flicks- i.e the american pie films. how on earth they could rake in so much money is beyond me. i think they reek Penny Lane 08-22-2007, 09:32 AM Titanic:rolleyes: |
