MTV and Britney Spears are in talks to give the troubled singer a chance to mount a comeback using the upcoming "Video Music Awards" telecast.

Officially, MTV declined to confirm or deny the buzz.

But production sources say they are in "deep discussions" about how to handle a performance by the fallen pop star.

The offbeat awards show could serve as a perfect platform to re-launch Spears' sputtering career, which has been badly overshadowed by her increasingly raucous personal life.

The VMAs, one of cable TV's most-watched events every year, usually strives for some type of newsworthy stunt. In past years, the show introduced the newly wed Michael Jackson and Lisa Marie Presley to the world and made headlines with the Madonna-Britney kiss.

The awards show is set to air Sept. 9 from Las Vegas.

Spears' career has been in free-fall lately following her divorce from Kevin Federline and a string of much-publicized incidents that have brought into question her ability to parent her young children

If she can keep whatever she has left together that long, she'll probably just screw it up anyways by doing something odd. :rolleyes:

The show isn't looking so great right about now. No big name performers with the exception of Amy, Justin and Kanye.

Hopefully (for MTV) Britney's performance goes through. She's been supposedly working her ass off and practicing with Cris Angel.
