I was saddened when it was announced that Merv Griffin passed away from cancer. Reading what was going on with him the end was coming. I tell you during 70s daytime talkshows had it going on with Merv Griffin, Mike Douglas and Dinah Shore. I came home from school to watch those three and they gave us good entertainment, they sung, and they had great guests. These "
so-called" talk shows cannot light a candle under those three. I know that Merv is up there with Mike, Dinah, Johnny and Jack (Parr) reminiscing about their glory days of the talk show circuit we were so fortunate to watch over the years. The 70s was the heyday of them.

I agree 100% with what you just said. I used to watch them too and they didn't need to be sensational like Jerry Springer to get people to watch either. :)

I loved watching Merv Griffin. I don't know what it was abt that man that intrigued me, an 8 year old to watch his show, but it was great! He was funny, he was entertaining and to me, that is what is great abt the memories that Merv left behind. I was saddened when he was no longer on television. I am even more saddened that he is no longer with us. I hope he knows what a legacy he left behind. His style was unique. I remember an interview he did with that hot actor from the "new" show KUNG-FU. I was so looking forward to watching David Carradine be interviewed.

Dinah Shore was always on when I was in school so I never got to see her much but Mike and Merv aired in the afternoons so I was able to watch them. Oddly enough, Merv's passing comes just over a year from that of Mike Douglas who died on 8/11/06 which was also his birthday. :(

Actually it was his rendition of Billy Joel's Piano Man is how I knew about the song. He did an outstanding job on that song with him playing piano and Jack Shelton on the trumpet.

im sitting here right now watching the merv griffin dvd set that came out last year he was im my mind the best talk show host ever and that includes johnny carson jay leno and everybody else he was the greatest because he listened to the guests without talking over them or steeping oon any laughas that they may have gotten i started watching him when i was very young and even attended 2 of his shows . there sure will never be another merv griffin im sure going to miss him.

We take some celebrity deaths harder than others, and I'm realizing that this is a difficult one. As the day went on, I found myself thinking about Merv Griffin more. As crazy as this sounds, I don't consider 82 to be very old. I know it's old, but my husband's mother will be 86 soon, and she is very pretty and clear-minded. It would have been nice if Merv had lived a few more years.

He was such a pleasant, personable and likable man. He had that fantastic, warm and embracing smile. My mother always had his show on. I remember this during the 70s, when I was a teenager, coming home from school. It seems that so many from that bygone era are passing on, more every year. It's another level of sadness because we're reminded of how distant in our lives and our pasts that those days have become. It really is like sands through the hourglass, these days of our lives. Time just marches on, and we have no control over that.

I'm sad that I never got a chance to see these legendary talk show hosts - they were before my time. My mom has fond memories of them, and agrees that the "hosts" of today can't hold a candle to the greats. :rip: Merv.
