~ Over Our Heads ~
Nat & Tootie: (walk in shop)
Mrs. Garrett: Hey girls! How was school?
Tootie: Great!
Nat: Pretty good.
Blair & JO: (walk in)
Blair: Yes he asked me out.
JO: Already?
Blair: YES ALREADY! (shouts)
Tootie: Who asked you out Blair?
JO: Some new boy. I only know two things about him. He is not human and he has bad taste. (laughs)
Nat: What is his name?
Blair: Jo, how would you know about being human, you’re hardly one yourself.
Mrs. G: Girls!
Blair: Sorry Mrs. Garrett. Well, he is human. His name is Robert Miller. He has VERY good taste, I mean why else would he ask me out? (smiles)
JO: I heard that he was a juvenile delinquent for quite some time and then in prison. I think it was for stealing and stuff like that.
Mrs. Garrett: (shocked with curiosity and concern) O really?
Blair: Yeah, I heard those too, but I wouldn’t believe them for a sec. Rob seems like such a sweet guy.
JO: OK, but don’t be too sure. I mean you only met the guy eight hours ago!
JO, Tootie, and Nat: (leave store)
Blair: So I’ll be missing dinner tonight Mrs. Garrett.
Mrs. G: OK, just don’t be too late and watch … (softer) well never mind.
~ Next afternoon – Over Our Heads ~
Blair: (walks in store)
Tootie: Hi Blair. How was your date last night?
Nat: Yeah, was Rob everything you thought he was?
Blair: um … It was fine. (mumbled and quickly) Well, I have a lot of homework and a date tonight. Um, bye.
JO: (walks in) Hi Blair!
Blair: (ignores JO and walks out thinking to herself)
JO: What’s wrong with her?
Tootie: I don’t know she hardly said anything to us.
Nat: I think it had something to do with Rob.
JO: Did you ask her about last night?
Nat: Yeah, all she said was that it was “fine”.
JO: What did you do that for?
Tootie: Easy, we were curious!
JO: Well it was a stupid idea!
Nat & Tootie: (bit of anger) WHY?
JO: It was just a stupid idea, OK?
Nat: OK. (sorry-like)
JO: (walks out)
Mrs. G: (walks in)
Tootie: (counting money) Hey Nat, could you change the sign on the door?
Nat: Sure. So how did we do today?
Tootie: I don’t know. I think we’re missing some money from yesterday.
Mrs. G: O, it’s OK. You probably just counted wrong. I’ll count it again for you. (counts money)
Tootie: OK thanks. Come on Nat! We’re gonna be late if we don’t leave!
Mrs. G: Where are you going?
JO: (walks in)
Nat: To the movies. Hey Jo, do you want to come with us?
JO: um, Sure. I’ll be right down. (Leaves and walks upstairs)
Mrs. G: (finishes counting money) Tootie, your definitely right. There is quite a bit of money missing. I wonder what happened to it. (pauses and thinks to self) O well. OK Girls, be home by 11:00.
Nat & Tootie: OK.
~ Girl’s Room ~
Blair: Hey JO, Could I talk to you for a sec?
JO: You actually think that I’M gonna talk to YOU! Hahahahaha! (laughs wickedly)
Blair: I’m serious Jo. It’s about Rob.
JO: OK. But hurry up, I have to go soon.
Tootie: (walks in) Come on JO, were gonna be late.
JO: OK Tootie, all be right down.
Tootie: (leaves)
JO: (sits down on bed) Go ahead Blair.
~ Down stairs – A few minutes later ~
Nat: Bye Mrs. Garrett. See you later.
Mrs.g: Have fun girls. Bye.
Nat, Tootie, & JO: (leave)
Blair: (walks in)
Mrs.G: HI Blair! How was your day? (very happy and cheerful)
Blair: Fine. (quick, unsure, & grouchy)
Mrs.G: Blair, is everything alright?
Blair: Everything is … great. (again quick & unsure)
Mrs. G: What about Rob? (worried)
Blair: Mrs. Garrett, Rob is wonderful. (anger) Look, I have a date tonight so I have to go. I’ll see you later. Bye.
Mrs. G: OK, bye. (upset & worried)
Blair: (leaves)
Mrs. G: (thinks to herself)
~ Store – Much later that night(11:00) ~
Blair: (in dark with flashlight taking money out of the cash register)
Mrs. Garrett: (walks in and sees light)
JO, Tootie, & Nat: (walk in and turn on lights)
Mrs. G. & Nat: (say at same time) Mrs. G: I knew I heard … Nat: That was …
Everyone: (freezes and realize what Blair is doing)
Mrs. G: (very troubled and trembling) Blair … what … I don’t understand. What are you doing?
Blair: I, I don’t know?
Nat: Blair, where’s the trust?
Blair: It’s not what it looks like!
Tootie: Good, because it looks like you are stealing money from a business that is part yours, that is not doing too good, and from sweet ol … (thinks about what she is saying) young Mrs. Garrett!
Nat: Um, yeah, what she said.
Mrs. G: Thank you, Tootie. (more relaxed and ahold of herself) Blair, what ARE you doing?
Blair: OK, so it is what it looks like. But I was gonna put it back. Honest!
Nat: And why should we believe you?
Mrs. G: Tootie, Natilie, that will be enough help. Blair, could I speak with you in the other room please?
Blair: Sure(complaining)
Nat & Tootie: (stubborn) GOOD BYE! (walk past Blair, give her a “look”, then walk upstairs)
Mrs. G: Blair, I’ll be in the other room, waiting. (walks out into living room)
Blair: Go ahead JO. Let me have it.
JO: I’m not gonna say anything mean. I just don’t know why you would do this, and for a boyfriend. Blair, a person who uses you for money is not what most people consider to be a friend.
Blair: Rob wasn’t using me for money. He’s a really nice person. He just needed a little extra money.
JO: (shouts very loud, like she really means what she is saying) Blair, think about it. Do you really believe that he would stay around after he got all of his money off of you? I know his kind of people. You think that he was actually going to use that money to “start over”, “get his feet off the ground”. I highly doubt that that money would help him at all! That money would most likely put him in more trouble than he all ready is in! (not shouting, in a calmer voice) Blair, just think about what you did. I’ll see you later.
JO & Blair: (walk in other room)
JO: Good night (walks upstairs)
Blair: (walks over and sits down on couch)
Mrs. G: (sitting on couch) OK now Blair, may I please have an explaination?
Blair: Well, you see Mrs. Garrett, that money wasn’t for me. It was for Robert. He said that he needed it to “start over”. But I really don’t think that the money was going to help him. I thought that I would be doing the right thing by helping him.
Mrs. G: Blair, helping a friend in need is always the right thing to do. But when you have to steal something to do the right thing, then it becomes wrong. I don’t care about the money, I’m just upset with the way that you handled it. I am not angry with you, Blair, just very dissappointed.
Blair: So am I, Mrs. Garrett. And I know what I have to do.
~ Next evening – “Living” room (9:00) ~
Blair: (walks in from date)
Mrs. G: O hi Blair. How was your date?
Blair: Well Mrs. Garrett, when I told Rob about the money he got very mad and left me for good. I feel very bad for him.
Mrs. G: Because of the situation that he is in?
Blair: Well that and becauce he left ME!(smiles) But I feel very good inside because I know what I did was right.
Mrs. G: Good for you, Blair. I’m proud of you.
Tootie: We’re proud of you too.
Nat: Yeah!
Blair: Thanks everyone. (smiles and while on steps says) Too bad my perfect night has to end.
Mrs. G: Why?
Blair: Because now I have to go face JO! (says in very happy and joking manor) Good night. (walks upstairs)
~ Girl’s Room ~
Blair: (walks in)
JO: (sitting on bed)
Blair: Thanks JO. (smiles)
JO: (smiles back) Sure, anytime. O, by the way, I don’t hold you responsible for not listening to my smart advice the first time. I know you can’t help it that your blonde! (laughs) Well, anyways, I guess that is what friends are for, huh?
Blair: Yeah, I guess so.
(smile at each other)
