It's amazing how many families on TV did not have a dog. It's just another thing that sets TV situations apart from real life.

Let's make a list of dogs that did have a place on TV: :dog:

Eddie-Frasier
Jack/Bandit-Little House on the Prairie
Astro-The Jetsons
Tiger-The Brady Bunch
Murray-Mad About You
Buck-Married With Children
Reckless-The Waltons
Lad-Please Don't Eat the Daisies
Comet-Full House
Dreyfuss-Empty Nest (Golden Girls)
Fred-I Love Lucy (& one time Butch)

And of course, Lassie

I'll say that dogs are much better represented than cats. Very few shows have a cat as part of the family. :(

Can you call the dog on Married... With Children a dog? It seems to be more intelligent than Kelly.

Cats are harder to train than dogs. Very few shows have dogs that are harder to train like Dachshunds. Goldens are common on tv because they are obedient, dachshunds are stubborn. When these dogs are on TV, they never do anything except sit or be held by someone.

What shows had cats?

What shows had a pet that disappeared without explanation?

Growing Pains- Ben get a puppy for Christmas that was never seen again (probably ended up in the shelter like many puppies given for Christmas, was that common in the 80s?)

Whenever they have cats or certain breeds of dogs, they don't do any tricks

Quincy on Coach, a stereotypical lazy basset hound that Luther towed in a wagon, only time he did anything was when hit bit the band conductor

Speaking of lazy basset hound, there is also Flash, Roscoe P Coultrain's basset hound on The Dukes Of Hazzard.

Simone - The Partridge Family (remember when she chased a skunk onto the bus?!?!)

On the first episode of the Brady Bunch the girls had a pet cat named Fluffy. (Tiger chased her and caused Mike and Carol's wedding to turn into a disaster area ) Come to think of it, Fluffy would fit into that category of pets who disappeared without explanation!

On The King of Queens, there was an episode where Doug and Carrie ended up taking in their neighbor's dog because their neighbors weren't taking very good care of it. Very cute dog but I think it was only in 2 episodes and then you never saw him again. As much as I loved the show, there were a couple things I didn't get, besides never seeing the dog again. First, in one episode, Carrie got a job as a dog walker, which she hated, she even told Holly that she hated dogs. Then in another episode, where they accidently got somebody else's photos at the drugstore and were looking through them. In the photos, there were pictures of a dog and Carrie says "Oh, they have a dog, let's get a dog". Everytime I hear that line, I think "You had a dog!!!" and it disappeared with no explanation!!!;)

On Wings, Roy had a bulldog, and which apparently he didn't treat very well, but when Faye dog sat him one weekend, she spoiled him so bad, she turned him into a sissy dog(as Roy puts it)

Also, Alex had a dog named Chopper, but it was only in one episode.

Two people have already mentioned Lucky on "Alf". But there's also Salem on "Sabrina the teenage witch", even though he's technically a wizard turned into a cat for a hundred years as a punishment for trying to take over the world.

What about ALF himself? Could he not have been considered a dog? He sure looked the part. I always figured that instead of keeping him hidden all the time so that nobody would know he was an alien, the Tanners would just say he was their dog. Who would know the difference?

If you were an ALF fan, you might also remember watching "Punky Brewster". She had a dog named Brandon who was named after NBC president Brandon Tartikoff, which I thought was a cute inside joke.

Alf had a fur, but other than that, he didn't look that much like a dog. Besides, he walked on two legs, not four.

I'm surprised nobody ever mentioned this puppy so I'm taking the liberty of posting this one. I'm talking about the Granddaddy of them all (A Male starred in the show, but his character was female.) He(She) went through seven owners for the duration of this series (Two Farm Boys, Three Forest Rangers and finally a Pair of Ranchers) and lived to the ripe old age of 133 "Doggy Years"

I'm talking about the greatest Dog TV show in the history of this planet -

I'll be darned, she was. I'm just putting my two cents worth.

How about the second most famous Dawg, a German Shepard. He did his thing at a 19th Century Army Fort located somewhere in the Western US. :D Nabisco's Shredded Wheat was the Sponsor. (Campbells Soup was the most famous Dawg's sponsor.)  :rotflmao: :brent
