DETROIT: Detroit Tigers' infielder Neifi Perez was suspended for 80 games Friday after testing positive for a third time for a banned stimulant, a penalty that finishes his season.

Perez was suspended for 25 games on July 6 when he tested positive for a second time. Under Major League Baseball's collective bargaining agreement with its players union, a player who tests positive for the first time is sent for counseling.

Perez has been the only player suspended by MLB for stimulants since they were banned before the 2006 season.

His first suspension had been set to end after Friday night's game against the Chicago White Sox, but Tigers president Dave Dombrowski wouldn't say whether Perez would have been restored to the active roster absent the new positive test.

Under MLB's labor contract, a player cannot be disciplined multiple times for a positive test stemming from the same use of a banned substance, meaning Perez had to take a prohibited stimulant more than once

Another positive test would lead to a suspension to be determined at the discretion of commissioner Bud Selig, with Perez having the right to have an arbitrator review the penalty

As long as Barry stated that he was "not aware" he was taking anything that "may have" muscle producing effects ala steroids, there will always be a cloud over his head.

I seen the news of him hitting that homer and it did nothing for me. Frankly, I still get this great feeling when I see a clip of Kirk Gibson hitting a grand slam for the LA Dodgers in the 1988 World Series while he was injured and he didn't play much for the season. Now THAT is an awesome clip I can watch over and over again. You feel for the man, you know he had a heartbreaking year, you knew he was in pain and yet, he hits a grand slam that goes down in history.

I just seen cockiness after Barry hit that ball. Just my opinion.

If he stays healthy, he's got a great chance of beating the record.

Alex Rodriguez definitely has age in his favor since he is the youngest player to reach 500 HR's.
