Of course, we're all friends here but, if you had to choose something,
what GI fan opinion or presentation in a fanfiction "annoys" you the most???
To answer my own question, I'd have to say:

1. Romantic pairings of Maryann and the Professor--especially of the love-of
each-others' lives variety (although many such fanfictions have been very
nicely written).
2. Romantic pairings of Gilligan/Maryann that present them acting like
elementary school children in their romance (again, with respect to fan
fictions--still some nice writing even so).

ERRRRRRRRRR!

Can't stand MaryAnn/Professor fanfics!!!!!!!

I also hate when they take characters really far out of characters. like adding vulgar dialouge, and sexual content.

uh, why does that need to be in GI fanfic of all things???

Hmmph.

Oooh well...

I just try my best to ignore those nuisances.

:)
But, i'm not trying to start a war against those shippers, everyone's entitled!

thnx for starting an interesting thread Im!!!!

it has been SOOOOO dead here lately!

I don't know...

... I guess he's just reeeally busy, otherwise, I'm sure he'd post since he luvs GI so much.

It's sad that he hasn't been an active poster lately, because he's the poster that usually gets other members to post on very interesting topics concerning Gilligan's.
And it's been soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo
slow lately.

ug.

oh well, maybe then i'll do something more constructive then spending hours online discussing the greatest show in the world!

What I can't stand anymore is the eternel war:Ginger or Mary Ann?

It always bring horrible debates.Everybody gets mad at each other, insult people just for an opinion...Everyone is free to choose who they prefer.

^ do you mean in fanfiction or just in general?

cuz it gets pretty annoying in fanfic when story after story, Ginger and MaryAnn are like at war against each other.

In the show, i think they get along pretty well, considering how different they are.

I get annoyed by the neverending debate that goes on and on in the forums.I went on other GI's sites and it always ended by horrible insults and the banning of people. In the fanfics,it's how they see,I respect that but,in forums, you express your opinion and you get insulted,it's really annoying

I'm back-lol

I am off work today so I will try to spend the morning on the island.

I just added about 18 pictures of the GI Trading Cards to the photo gallery. Will try to add the others soon.

Another thought on this. With respect to fanfictions, it bothers me when the writers get so scared and apologetic about "staying in character." I agree that a good fanficton must stay in character--that is its essence. Still, there are two types of fanfictions, one that is like an additional episode to the show, that could easily be episode #99 and the type that explore what might be true to character but never be an episode of Gilligan's island due to censorship, for one. For example, (I know some people will get mad at this, sorry) although "Gilligan's Island" would never have any of the characters cursing (what sitcom does, actually?) it is my opinion that most of them would curse or use off-color language in certain situations. They are all respectable, largely decent people, of course, and I don't think any of them are "sewer mouths" but many of them are also very regular people and many of them have either (or both) tempers and worldly experience. I can certainly see the Skipper saying some things and Gilligan, as well (though perhaps not in front of the women but then again, yes, within a Gilligan/Maryann relationship context). If Ginger really got mad at someone, maybe in a heated romantic argument, she might utter a few things, as would Mr. Howell in some contexts. The Professor might utter some mild expletives in the presence of the Skipper and occasionally if Gilligan were present. I can even see Maryann, if by herself, whispering an occasional very mild word if the pots started boiling over all over the place. Perhaps Mrs. Howell is completely programmed not to, I'd grant. Someone got upset once in response to a fanfiction in which the Skipper said "p---/off." I don't know how common that phrase was in the 60's but I could definitely see the Skipper using it--though not on the actual show--but that is what fanfiction provides!

^ i find it annoying when fanfics go overboard with the cussing...
i mean if it's just one or two little things uttered it's okay.
however, i still don't think it's nessasary. but, shrugs.

Yeah, sometimes the characters are reeeeeeeeeeeeeeeaaly out of context, and other times it's just mild.
i don't know. some of the most hilarious fanfics are the ones that are sooooooo out of character, but i dunt know...

I've found that Gilligan himself is a very difficult character to get just right, because, as one reviewer remarked, he is really a very complex character. Joey Green (whose castaway character sketches are constantly quoted on the web, without acknowledging the source) notes that Gilligan often proposes very clever ideas. When fan writers present Gilligan as borderline mentally handicapped, so laid-back he seems to have a huge secret stash of joints somewhere (no Bob-Dawn jokes here, anybody!) or as immature as a five-year-old, that's a thing that really bothers me. I keep thinking, who is this guy?

Ginger is the other character that I find often gets distorted in fan fiction. I think fans sometimes project their frustrations with Tina Louise and her disapproval of the show onto the character of Ginger. I can't get over what a mean, tempermental person she is often portrayed to be, especially towards Gilligan. When was she ever like this on the show? In season 3 especially she is very sweet to him on many occasions. I actually included a chapter in one of my stories listing all the nice things she'd done, just to vindicate her!

Hearty agreement from me on both points. You are absolutely right. As a sort of flip-side, Mary Ann also gets questionable treatment in fan fictions-- she is sometimes (perhaps often) portrayed as too sweet, naive and perfect. A Mary Sue, to use the correct fan fiction term. Mary Ann is certainly sweet, but she has her moments of cattiness and snappishness as well. I also refer to something Sherwood Schwartz said about her character-- she is innocent out of determination, not so much out of pure naivete. She knows what's what. I think this is often misrepresented in fanfic.
