Rules Change For Mailing Packages

WASHINGTON -- People who mail parcels weighing 13 ounces or more with stamps as postage will have to hand over the package at the post office counter beginning Monday.

Previously, the requirement applied only to mail over 16 ounces.

Postal officials said the change is part of the effort to improve security in the mail.


"This is something that was arrived upon by security experts both inside the postal service as well as many other federal agencies," postal service spokesman Dave Lewin said.

Customers who want to drop a heavier parcel into a mailbox, postal lobby slot or have it collected by their carrier can still do so, but they must use postage other than stamps.

Alternative postage is available at automated postal centers in many post office lobbies, online at the post office's Click-N-Ship service or with PC postage from private companies.

Businesses can continue to use postage meters for packages of any weight.

Actual stamps or Click N Ship, What's the difference? A suspicious package is still a suspicious package no matter what type of postage you use. At least that's the way I see it. I ship with Paypal so I'm not affected by this but it's still ridiculous.

Just something to make you have to stand in line longer at the post office.

They just want us to use Click-N-Ship because it doesn't allow you to purchase first class or media mail postage. You have to use priority mail (or above) which is more expensive. :mad:

Which is why I ship through Paypal, You don't have to settle for priority or higher.
