I have grown up listening to the oldies, like Aretha Franklin, Diana Ross, and Marvin Gaye, and it seems like their are very few people still out there today that enjoys listening to this kind of music, soul and especially Motown. So, is there anyone out there at these boards that does listen to the oldies, and what are some of your favorite groups and songs?

My tastes run from the Classics such as Mozart and Beethoven to the fun J-punk-pop Sounds of Japanese girl bands Shonen Knife and Mikabomb....

I hate today's "American music" when it comes to North American music,
I listen to mainly anything older than I am, particularly, the "Big Band" sounds of the 30s and 40s and 50s Rock'n'Roll ( I like the early 60s too, but, when the Beatles broke up, R&R went into the toilet , and Rap and hiphop are well...lets not get into how I feel about them  )

30s and 40s

Favorite bands & singers:
Judy Garland
Bing Crosby
Glenn Miller Band
Andrews sisters
Bob Eberly

Songs:
Over the Rainbow
Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy
In the Mood
Chatanooga Choochoo
Zing went the strings of my heart
I'll never smile again
Bluebirds over, the white cliffs of Dover

1950s

Bands and singers:
Buddy Holly and the Crickets
Gene Vincent and the BlueCaps
Johnny Burnette
Little Richard
Jerry Lee Lewis

Songs:
Thatll be the day < My fave song of all time ( And pretty much anything else by Buddy! )
Smoke gets in your eyes
A thousand stars
Be Boppa Lula
Think it over
my prayer
Little Darling
Too much Monkey business
And too many more to list!

1960s-70s

Bands and Singers:
Beatles
Beach Boys
Guess Who
3 Dog Night
Creedence Clearwater
Doors

Songs:
I wanna hold your hand
Light my fire
Bad moon rising
fun fun fun
Shes my Summer girl ( B-side ofJan and Dean's Surf City)
Sukiyaki
In the Summer time ( when the winter was hot)
Beautiful Sunday
American Woman
LA Woman
and many more..but, i'm tired of typing!

Most of the music I enjoy listening to ranges from the early 60's to the early 90's with a few top hits from 95 - 07.

I'm somewhat different in that I like a lot of variety. There isn't just one singer or group that I can attach myself to. I like a lot of one hit wonders, too.

Some of my favorites going from 60's onward are: The Drifters, Mamas Papas, Fifth Dimension, Elton John, A lot of Disco (Yeah, I admit it), James Taylor, Madonna, Styx, ect..

I like both the Beatles and Rolling Stones....BUT, I have more Rolling Stone favorites than Beatles. Probably because they have been around so much longer.

I can also listen anytime to Nat King Cole or a good Sinatra tune. Like I said, Variety.

I mostly like music from the 50s-80s. I have ALL of the Motown collections on CD. I also have the Beatles, Rascals, Elton John, Crosby Stills & Nash, Chicago, James Taylor, Carly Simon. I could go on and on. I'm not too crazy about today's music, but I do like some of it, including some hip-hop.

Im not a big Dylon ( Real name Robert Allen Zimmerman ) fan but, he did have some pretty good folk songs early in his career such as:
The Times They Are A-Changin'
Mr. Tambourine Man
Don't Think Twice, It's All Right
It Ain't Me, Babe
Lay, Lady, Lay
and his best song (IMHO),
Blowin' in the Wind

Man oh man, OLDIES BUT GOODIES is what I grew up with. Of course, they were still kinda new at that time. I was born in 1965 but I had an older brother and my older sister would play records all the time, so of course, music from the 60's is in my blood.

I have almost a 1000 songs on my iPod and real one player that consist of pure oldies (anything before 1970). My fave girl group is THE CHANTELS. They had several hits that I just love, such as: LOOK IN MY EYES, THE PLEA, MAYBE and I LOVE YOU SO. I especially love the oldies that originated from the Los Angeles area in the 60's, such as Don & Juan.

Beach Boys- Don't worry baby, Good Vibrations, sloop John G., Only God Knows, In my Room, and Kokamo
The 4 Tops- I can't help myself, Baby I need your lovin, and Ain't no women like the one I got
Eagles- Hotel California, Desperado, Take it easy, Tell me why, Already Gone, One of these nights and In a New York minute
CCR- Proud Mary, Who'll stop the rain, Susie Q, Down on the Corner, Born On the Bayou and Bad Moon Rising
Elvis- Hound Dog, Jailhouse Rock, Heartbreak Hotel, Return to Sender, All shook up, Blue christmas and A little less Conversation
Donna Summer- Last Dance, She works hard for the money and Hot stuff
Commadors- Night Shift, Brick House and Easy
Doobie Brothers- Listen to the music, Long Train Running, Taking it to the street, What a fool believes and Black Water
Abba- Dancing Queen, Thank you for the Music, Take a chance on me and What's the name of the game
Eddie Rabbit- U and I, I love a rainy night, I'm driving my life away and Two dollars in the jukebox
Alabama- Dixieland Delight, Play me that Moutian music, Cheap Seats, angles among us, The closer you get, Roll On eighteen wheeler, and lady down on love
The Judds- Grandpa, Mama he's crazy, Love can build a bridge and why not me?

I LOVE music from the 1950's(1954 -1960),BOTH early and late 1960's music, and early 1970's music .None of that disco stuff appeals to me,(Yes,I know some people like it)although I DO LIKE The Spinners'"I Love Music",and KC and the Sunshine Band's "That's the Way uh-huh,uh-huh,I like it." I also like instrumentals, but I despise most remakes. And I DO NOT like 1980's ,1990's,and 200's music.

I don't consider 80's music oldies, that the decade must of my favorite music comes from and I don't want to consider my favorite songs as oldies just yet

It's great to see a lot of people still listen to the oldies. My entire IPod is filled with oldies from the sixties and seventies. Just the other day I was listneing to Aretha Franklin while cleaning the house, and when my children walked in the door, they immediately told me to turn it off, and they put on some punk rock music. This really made me mad, because all it was was a bunch of noise. I just wish bands today were somewhat like what they were in the fifties and sixties.

That'll never happen because, like the movie industry wh*res, the recording industry wh*res prefer to push the very worst elements in society ( Gangs, war, murder ) and sell them as entertainment, especially to the kids!

Not to mention that you had to have MUSICAL TALENT (for the most part) to get a recording contract.

 I remember hearing that Whitney Houston was a model when she was approached to sign a recording contract, despite the fact that shed never BEEN a singer. The man who signed her was thrilled that , as a bonus, she actually COULD sing, but, he would have signed her either way! ( Says a lot about priorities in the music bizz, doesnt it? )

You might enjoy my favorite "New" band, Shonen Knife, they do R&R the OLD way , for the most part.....They are Japanese, but, have recorded several albums in English . ( they have Japanese accents of course, which makes everything they sing sound SO cute! ;) )

( Think Ramones meet the BeachBoys meet the Ronettes, and youll have some idea what they sound like  )

these days its not about quality but quantity, as money seems to be the main factor in all of them. it doesn't matter how crap they appear to be, for the producers, as long as it brings in the mega bucks for them, they couldn't care less really
