View Full Version : "I Wasn't Alive Then!" (An Adam Semi-Rant)

I don't know if this topic is strong enough for it's own thread, but I'll give it a try.

I'm 25 years old and I love the old TV shows. From the fifties thru the sixties (and of course beyond that). However, I don't know anyone (in person) my age that's into those shows.

Anyways, when I ask someone if they've seen a certain show, let's say "My Three Sons," they'll say no and ask when it was on. I'll say in the sixties, and they reply "I wasn't alive then!" The thing is, neither was I, but I've still seen that show (and others from that decade). Have those people never heard of reruns, lol.

If it's not current, they don't watch it. I remember once, I asked a girl I worked with if she liked oldies music and she seemed apauled. She said she only likes current music. What's the deal with that? I know that's her preference, and I'm okay with it. It's just that her only reason for not liking oldies music is because those songs were made too long ago. Not because they suck or anything.

You know - to me a good song is a good song, no matter what decade it was made in. Same goes for movies and TV shows. That's why I like so many from the past, and almost none from today.

One of the lamest excuses I get from someone who won't watch The Twilight Zone is because it's in black & white. That excuse also applies to any other series not filmed in color. I have a friend who only watches the color episodes of The Andy Griffith Show and as far as I'm concerned, when it went to color, It went downhill.

I'm 16 and I like classic rock and hip-hop (the doors, jimi hendrix, Run D.M.C., Krs-One) and I like shows from all decades 50's, 60's, 70's, and 80's.

Yeah some people just dont realise that B&W is often a BETTER medium for movies, espcially drama, or monster movies. The dark shadows and white contrasting light set a mood in a way colour CAN'T.....the Twilight Zone is a particularly good example ( works with tV also ), the B&W eps of that show were some of the most dramatic, and intelligent programming EVER. The new TZ really didnt do all that much for me, as you just couldnt make the show as spooky and dramatic, with colour!

I hear that from people too. I personally love "The Twilight Zone" and it's best in black and white. I can't imagine what that show would have been like if it stayed on the air a few seasons longer and went to color. Also, I've never seen the newer versions. For me if Rod Serling isn't there then it's not truely "The Twilight Zone." Just impersonators who get to use the same title.

Also, and I'm proud of this, I bought seasons 1 and 2 of "Bewitched" and season 1 of "I Dream of Jeannie" in Black and White! I even had to wait a few weeks longer for season 2 of "Bewitched" but I didn't want to help the sales for the colorized set.

And anyone who only watches the color episodes of "The Andy Griffith Show" is no fan of the show. Even if they think they are. They'd take color episodes over black and white episodes WITH BARNEY FIFE! They miss out on so much by just watching the color years.

I heard Mel Brooks say in an interview once about his movie "YOUNG FRANKENSTIEN" (funny movie:lol: ) that he made it in black-and-white for EXACTLY that reason.
I remember, one thing he said in the interview was "You can't make a Frankenstien movie in color".

My favorite decade for movies was the 1970's. Since I wasn't born until 1976 I was either not born yet or was much too young to see those classic movies. I also really love a lot of 70's music too. As Monika said, a good song is a good song and it really doesn't matter what decade it is from.

I love The Twilight Zone. The fact that it was in black and white gave the show much of it's creepiness.

The original main cast of Bewitched all appeared in TZ, and all are terrific episodes. Elizabeth Montgomery appeared with Charles Bronson in "Two" (Season 3), Dick York was in two episodes ("The Purple Testament" from Season 1 and "A Penny For Your Thoughts" from Season 2), and Agnes Moorehead starred in "The Invaders" from Season 2. Of Bewitched's supporting cast, David White made two guest spots: "A World of Difference" (Season 1) and "I Sing the Body Electric" (Season 3), and Sandra Gould made two appearances as well: "Cavender Is Coming" (Season 3) and "What's in the Box?" (Season 5). Neat, huh? :D

Well, I'm like you. Most of the stuff I dig (outside of a few current shows and music from the 80s and 90s) was made before I was born. In this age of DVDs and reruns, I wasn't alive then isn't a valid excuse. Hell, I wasn't alive for WWII, but I've still heard about it. It's called opening your eyes a little wider. People that are only wrapped up in the NOW annoy me.

i'm 19 and I like whatever music's on the radio, no matter how old it is..and I love televison from all decades, from I Love Lucy and Leave it to Beaver to Threes Company and Facts of Life to Law and Order SVU and other current shows..my taste varies and age isn't a difference at all.

I'm the same way. I'm 20 and I enjoy a lot of things from the
50's...although I'm finding a lot of people my age are into the 50's era. I prefer the classic stuff from TV shows, movies and music...the days when people where required to have some talent to be a star and everything on the TV and radio wasn't the same washed up stuff.

i HATE it when people have lame excuses for not liking things. I was singing the theme from I dream of Jeanie the other day and someone said they'd never heard it, and i said "are you serious? it's a classic theme song, like the brady bunch or gilligans island", and they said "i dont know those either, i WASN'T ALIVE then"....

i shook my head in sadness. same when i listen to music and people ask "what IS this? sounds like something my parents would listen to".... ****ing stupid!

i think its wise to engage in as much culture as possible, and experience everything, new and old, and decide for yourself whether its good or bad based on how good it is, not how old it is.

anyways, i'm on board with you, i hate it.

ITA with this. If it's good, it's good, period. It does seem odd that someone wouldn't have heard of "My Three Sons" or say, Janis Joplin just because they weren't born yet. It isn't like it's privileged information or something.

I think it just depends on who you ask, because I've found plenty of younger people that seem to be aware of pop culture before their time and others who are completely oblivious. And this is the generation that has more access to information than any other previous generation? I guess it's all about what you are interested in and what you are willing to expose yourself to.

When I was in high school, it seemed everyone was more into older, classic rock than the current stuff then (80's). Everyone I knew seemed to have some Dylan, Stones, Doors, etc in their collection. It didn't have to be in the Top 40 for them to know about it. In fact, it seemed kids at my high school shunned current music.

I know how you feel, Adam. See, with me, almost everything I like (music-wise) is considered 'classic'. I'm heavily in to the 60's and 70's (I also love the 80's and 90's too, but I grew up in that era). But, yeah, I love music like Led Zeppelin, The Beatles, The Doors, Pink Floyd, Billy Joel, etc).

I guess it all depends on taste. I really don't LOVE anything recent, but some of it is good. I guess I just don't understand why someone won't like something just because it's old. Then again, I can see how it would go for not liking things that are modern...it's no different, I guess.

Chesty Pickle
07-25-2007, 03:49 PM
i like tons of modern music, and tons of old music... i like music if i think its good, period, from any genre or era. it's dumb to me to take anything into concideration other than "does this sound good to me?"

same goes with movies and tv, and everything really.

I was in a bowling league for five years with a couple of friends (who are married, though when we started bowling, they were just boyfriend/girlfriend). I just quit the league a couple months ago. Anyways, these two friends of mine (who are in their early 20s) don't know anything about classic television. In fact, thinking of them encouraged me to do this thread, lol.

For their wedding present, I bought them the Classic 39 episodes of "The Honeymooners" on DVD. They had never seen the show before, but it's always been one of my favorites and I bought it for them. They have been married three years and to this day they still haven't watched a single episode of "The Honeymooners." It's one thing if they check it out and hate it, but to not even check it out at all annoys me.

^ I know how you feel Adam. :(

When I was in 6th grade I bought my own two-cassette Carpenters' Yesterday Once More compilation. I loved it right away (my mom was/is also a big Carpenters fan), and I showed it to a kid at school. She laughed right in my face!

I'm happy to say that while many of the pop acts from that period (circa 1991-92) have since vanished into obscurity, I still love and play the Carpenters (I own almost all their CDs) today! Same goes for millions of others worldwide! :D

The majority of my students are 18-22 and from what I've noticed, some are very curious, aware, and informed about pop culture that came before them. OTOH, there are others that aren't willing to give anything that isn't current much of a chance.

One time I used a Pink Floyd video to teach certain elements of lighting design and one student asked "what's Pink Floyd?" There were others though, that just groaned and said the requisite "how do you not know who that is?" This student (who was a great kid, I must add) pulled the "It was before my time, I guess" card, but others just weren't having it! I told everyone to settle down and cued up the DVD player. :D

ETA: Oh, the Carpenters! I haven't thought about them in such a long time. Talk about childhood memories. My Mom used to play their albums when I was little. I dug their music.
