because the contract expired and the ratings were dwindling.

I think since the show had been on so long, they needed to make room for new shows. You can vote for different shows that have been taken off the air to be added back to the lineup by clicking here (http://www.tvland.com/switchboard/suggest_show.jhtml).

According to Dick and Carl Reiner, and Sheldon Leonard, they wanted to end the show after five seasons, "while it was still on top"- creatively and in terms of audience appeal. Carl once remarked that he never intended for the show to last more than five seasons. The ratings for the series were still quite good- especially when "GREEN ACRES" was their lead-in at 9pm(et), during that final season. No, it was the consensus of virtually everyone involved, that it was time to move on to other things.....

the question was, WHY DID THE SHOW LEAVE TV LAND? Not why did it leave CBS.

I think Sheldon Leonard wanted the series to continue. He tried to persuade Carl Reiner and Dick Van Dyke to keep the show going, but they both said no.

I wish that TV Land would renew Dick Van Dyke
