View Full Version : How would you have handled the show after Dick York's collapse?
YELLOW11 07-16-2007, 10:55 PM How would you have handled it?
A. Do what they did and replace the actor with no explanation.
B. Have Samantha divorce Darrin and marry another mortal.
C. Have Endora change Darrin's looks.
D. Continued to write episodes where Darrin's "away" until Dick York was strong enough.
catlover79 07-16-2007, 11:00 PM None of the above - I would've just ended the show. The plots were already getting stale and recycled, the show had run five seasons and there were 170 episodes in the can. I would've taken the show out on top. Having said that, I'm glad they recast rather than have Darrin and Sam split up. With the romantic and sexual chemistry that EM & DY brought to the characters, it surely would've been a shame. Too bad EM & DS didn't even have a smidgen of chemistry together, but that's another post for another day,.
Mr. Television 07-16-2007, 11:02 PM I would have ended the show when DY could no longer appear. What made the show great was Elizabeth Montgomery and Dick York....no substitutes.

:clap Sonny, you summed it up perfectly! Agreed! :D

Thanks Monika :D What I never liked about Dick Sergents Darrin is he always seemed so angry. I never really saw awhole lot of love between Samantha and Darrin after Dick York left the show. And during the 1970's when I really watch Bewitched a lot, the first 2 seasons were hardly ever rerunned and they were the best shows. I never understood that just because they were in black and white.
Janice 07-17-2007, 12:17 AM I would have tried to make it work with Dick York. From what I read, his collapse that final day was caused by being overmedicated. I realize they accommodated York for years, but I think he deserved more time. Had he ever missed any time before that?
roseha 07-17-2007, 12:28 AM I haven't seen Bewitched in a very long time, but yes they should have tried to accommodate Dick York. They could have worked something out, Darrin could have gotten a new job that required him to travel and they could have just reduced his scenes. They could have filled some of the time with the other actors.
Larry Tate 07-17-2007, 11:43 AM After his collapse in Late Nov/69 Dick York was beddridden for over a year & only semi-lucid during this time, so how could they have made it work in that context, how could they have accomadated him.
He made the decision to quit right after his collapse, he knew his body had given out & that he would never be able to play the role again.
So the idea that if they just gave him a chance or worked things out with him makes no sense, he was a drug addicted physical wreak at that point of time.
He was not overmedicated, his body just gave out.
As well it would have been a terrible mistake to try to turn Darrin into an
occasionally reoccuring character.
So what was there to work out with him, nothing, as after all he made the decision to quit.

Janice 07-17-2007, 12:49 PM Dick York was taking too many drugs as he states in this interview. It's a vicious cycle that often happens to chronic pain patients. Who knows, maybe he needed to be detoxed and try another course of therapy. They could have given him a chance, that's all I'm saying. He deserved it.

Mirri 07-17-2007, 01:14 PM How can you give someone another chance when THEY quit the show themselves of their own accord right away, what were they supposed to do get a court order to make him return with forced pain medication or something.
He was literally bedridden for over a year after his collapse unable to get out of it.
What chance in that context did he deserve?
Should they have gone into Hiatus for a year to give him a chance to recover?
That would not have been a rational option for obvious reasons, & as well he still would have been unable to film a single frame at that point of time.
They did the right thing, the only thing to do & at the right time for the good of the show.

I think that Dick York was a gentleman, and he graciously stepped aside. Had he been given encouragement by Asher and Montgomery, I think he would have tried. Nobody knew at the time that he would be flat out for over a year. We're all brilliant in hindsight. I am of the opinion that he needed to be detoxed, rested up and alternate methods tried for his back.
They could have at least tried. It cost them in the end anyway because the showed sucked rotten eggs after York left.

Scoobiedoo30 07-17-2007, 03:41 PM if my memory is correct he was on the drugs for back Trouble
Mikado 07-17-2007, 04:06 PM They should have ended the show .....the later years are simply painful to watch with DS
queenFrostine278 07-26-2007, 01:54 AM howabout mother turns dumbo into a thimble or something and loses him forever. i would have just had him disappear. i never liked any of that darrin office life larry tate crap anyway. i really only like to watch sam, endora, tabitha, and serena :-D

Janice, I agree. That's probably how they would have handled it nowadays. Remember, we are talking over 40 years ago. They didn't know as much about backs, drugs, detoxing and alternatives then.
I have had a bad back for over 30 years and had 3 surgeries in the '80's. I can't believe the improvement in treatment since then! Poor Dick didn't have much of a chance at that time.
They should have ended the show while it was still a winner and show Mr. York some respect.
BensonFan 07-29-2007, 12:47 AM Well, I once read a quote of DY where he mentioned that final season of his and he said, "I just needed the summer to rest up." It sounded as if he was implying that he would have been able to continue had the producers had more patience with him.
IF (and only if) this was true, I would have allowed him the summer to see if he could really continue like he said he could have. Based on the condition he was in, I have my doubts he could have gone on, but at least the caliber person he was they could have given him the benefit of the doubt. Of course they would still have to have a backup plan for the 6th season should he fail to be able to continue on a regular, normal basis.
Once it was determined he could no longer continue, I agree with quite a few others here that it was time to pull the plug on the show. I know there were contractual obligations though, so that's a whole 'nother issue.
Larry Tate 07-29-2007, 01:40 AM First off it was DY that quit the show on the day of his collapse so it was not a matter of him not having been given a chance or enough patience being shown him.
It was later in the following Spring after his collapse, around March the following year that he asked to regain his role with the idea that if he could have the summer upcoming to recover he could do the 6th season etc.
First of all he would not have been able to do so, & this is not he most likely would not have been rather he would not have been able to for sure as he was bedridden, on his back & unable to be mobile for a year & a half after his collapse & even then would not have been able to withstand the rigors of a weekly show at that point in his life.
This was obvious to Liz & Bill & time proved them right.
So it would have been a complete failure if they had agreed to wait for him.
It was just a drug induced fantasy on Dick Yorks part the implication that he could have continued with the summers rest, it just was not going to work nor based in reality.
For one thing by then they had contracted Dick Sargent for the role & had filmed several episodes at great expense & had made a commitment to the new cast as such & as well as i mentioned he would not have been able to film a inch of film anyways even with the rest.
By then all of their top choices to replace him would have been taken for other projects & they would have been forced to hire anyone they could get just to fill the part.
The show was not contracted to continue past season 5 so that was not an issue as to do they go on or not.
They simply choose too & agreed to a new 3 year deal, 2 years & an option for a third.
In my view they did the right thing in continuing the show, Dick Sargent did an excellent job, we had 3 more superb seasons of Bewitched & were all the richer for it for having these years as a part of our viewing lives.
Larry Tate :)
BensonFan 07-29-2007, 10:00 AM That's interesting, Larry....not at all what I read. I guess it makes you wonder what's really the truth sometimes.
comedyfreak 07-29-2007, 07:11 PM In my view they did the right thing in continuing the show, Dick Sargent did an excellent job, we had 3 more superb seasons of Bewitched & were all the richer for it for having these years as a part of our viewing lives.
Larry Tate :)
Finally!! Someone else out there liked Dick Sargent besides myself. I loved the Sixth season when Sam was pregnant with Adam, it made some good episodes. My favorite was Samantha's Curious Cravings.
Larry Tate 07-30-2007, 02:44 AM Myself i think Dick Sargent did an excellent job in each of his 3 years as Darrin.
In many ways his more easy going, laid back & relaxed attitude fit the time line at that point of the show in terms of how Darrin would be after 6 years in the witch race.
He was much more easy going & not screaming hysterically at Samantha all the time as Dick York did.
It was funny when Dick York reacted that way but after a while it got a bit old & Dick Sargent's more low key performance was a nice change of pace & a respite from all that Histrionics.
If we had seen Dick Sargent from the get go as Darrin then i think all the negative comments directed towards him would not have taken place.
Most of that is just Dick York fans hating him for not being Dick York & for being in the Role that Dick York was so beloved in by his fans.
Truth is that we were lucky to have Dick Sargent step in as we got two excellent actors playing the one character Darrin for the price of one.
Plus it has been well acknowledged directly by Screen Gems executives since, that when the switch happened nobody noticed, in terms of fan reaction vie phone calls, letters etc, well there just wasn't any.
Larry Tate :)
Mikado 07-30-2007, 02:51 AM I dissagree, had Dick Sargent been Darrin from the beginning, it wouldnt have been a hit, cause the show wouldnt have worked.....it was impossible to believe that DS's Darrin LOVED Sam, which was the focus of the early shows.....there was simply NO chemistry there!
Larry Tate 07-30-2007, 03:13 AM I disagree, i think the show would have been very successful right from the
start as the real reason for that success would still have been there,
Elizabeth Montgomery, she was in effect Bewitched.!!, hence the show would have worked just as it did with DY.
DS had a very effective & warm loving, affectionate chemistry with Liz that
while not as effective as romantic chemistry was with DY was more appropriate, logical & effective in the stage that their marriage was in after 6 years & all, as a lot of the intense passion would have no longer been so obvious at that point as it is in all marriages basically.
To me as i see it you could see that DS as Darrin loved Samantha very much!
As well there is a common misconception in my view that the first season was all romance focused like the pilot was or episode # 5, or 17, most of the shows that season were like most of the shows were every season on Bewitched, comedy focused, with the basis of the comedy coming from the conflict that the use of witchcraft created between the Mortal & Witch Worlds rather then Romantic focused episodes.
So in my view that makes your point about the early episodes moot.
Larry Tate :)
Mikado 07-30-2007, 03:47 AM to me, Ds's Darrin acted more like he hated Sam and was just WAITING for a chance to bolt, but, I guess we see what we want to see.....most people see it my way, but, hey, we cant all agree on everything, right? :)
Personally, I wont watch any ep with the second Darrin, cant stand them...but, to each his own, you can watch the ones you like, and ill watch the ones I like ^_^'
its all good, we can agree to disagree :D
mstewart 07-30-2007, 07:27 AM The show should had ended after DY left. The fifth and sixth season with DS was fine and the dynamics was different but still it was good. The eighth season was painful to watch because of Liz not DS. Liz did not want to be there and it showed in her performances. She played Samantha that season as being more mean spirited and always in a pissed off mood. The episode in that season when Samantha went off on Tabitha's teacher she had a glared in her eye that was real not acting. Plus her and Bill Asher, her husband and producer/director of Bewitched, were having marital problems and she was ready to end the show. I cannot imagine what they would had done if the show went into a 9th season given it was the 70s and sitcoms was changing thanks to Norman Lear to being more edgy and MTM was bringing more relational sitcoms. Bewitched was out of date when the 70s came along. It shows that most shows should end after five years and learn from Bea Arthur, Mary Tyler Moore and Dick Van Dyke to get out while you are on top.
Heidi Dawn 07-30-2007, 11:21 AM I thought Dick Sargent was a good replacement for Dick York. Dick York obviously couldn't continue because of his back problems (and I don't blame him for leaving). I saw Dick Sargent on many shows after Bewitched and he was so funny but he could also play dramatic roles.
I read somewhere that Elizabeth Montgomery and Dick Sargent remained good friends until the day he died. They got along better off-screen than Dick York and Elizabeth Montgomery did.
I guess what I'm saying is that I'm looking forward to seeing the Dick Sargent episodes on DVD.
Larry Tate 07-30-2007, 11:59 AM First of all I do not see what I want to see rather what is actually to be seen & is on the screen itself.
Others see what they choose to through a prism that is distorted by the affection that they feel for DY, hence I believe the place from where all the hatred for DS comes from by the Yorkies who express it.
What I saw was DS as Darrin clearly in love & devoted to Samantha with great affection for her & totally devoted to being with her evermore.
Most Yorkies have the view that you express but most Bewitched fans in total, although may prefer DY, still very much like & enjoy DS as Darrin & his seasons a great deal.
He was very popular with the original generation of Bewitched fans that count the most the & although they are not as vocal as the Yorkies they exist just as much to the same extent.
Although the ratings which are a relative thing to other shows did go down, the actual number of Households & people watching Bewitched were actually higher in the DS years then the early DY years for example.
As well the changeover prior to season 6 was not publicised & was largely unknown to the Bewitched Fan base till it happened. So when the fans tuned in to see the first episode of Season 6 they were expecting to still see DY, the ratings for this episode where they were tuning in to see DY were exactly the same as they were for the rest of the season when when they were tuning in to see DS, as they knew of the switch after seeing the first episode.
As well after the switchover there was no reaction from Bewitched fans, nobody called or wrote & cared or had a problem with it.This according to Screen Gems executives of the time like Bill Asher, Harry Ackermen, Richard Baer & Richard Michaels.
Thank goodness that the show did not end after season 5, that would have been a huge mistake & instead it should have been as it was done with the show continuing onwards for 3 more Wonderful Seasons.
Yes, Liz & DS were very good friends in a personal sense while she & DY were merely fellow workers who otherwise were not aquatinted & were nothing more, which is why they had zero contact after DY left the show.
The Dynamics of the show as to how the characters such as Darrin, Samantha & Endora etc. interrelated & the Premise of the show was unchanged by the changeover from DY to DS, everything was maintained as it had been with consistency.
The 8th season was excellent & very enjoyable, all this Liz was bored, unhappy, hated being there, was a hateful Samantha & changed the character is a lot of Rubbish & is not what one sees on the screen, rather one sees the opposite of all this hateful comments.
Furthermore Elizabeth Montgomery is on record in many interviews that she loved doing all 8 years of the show, was never ever bored for a minute or unhappy doing the show during the 8 seasons & that it was a great experience throughout the entire run of the show & that she would not change anything about her experience in doing the show.
Her words are the truth & after all she should know as they were her feelings.
In fact what one sees is a happy & joyful Samantha, more so even then the previous seasons & that is saying something.
Good examples of this are Bewitched,Bothered & Baldoni, Three Men & a Witche on a Horse, where Adams powers were tested & the final episode, all that i have described is clearly deliniated in those episodes.
Larry Tate :)
catlover79 07-30-2007, 01:58 PM I never said I hated DS. I liked him in other roles (Teen Witch, to name just one) but I just prefered DY in the role of Darrin. Even when DY was still on the show, the plots were getting stale and scripts were being rehashed - I think that was the bigger problem as the show went on.
You are right that EM & DY didn't socialize outside of Bewitched - I read that he didn't do the Hollywood party scene and prefered to spend his off-hours with his wife and kids. All three were truly talented, special performers and all are missed.
Mikado 07-30-2007, 02:13 PM Hey Larry , i didnt say YOU see what you want to see, i said WE as in we all do....and i happen to be a first gen Bewitched watcher....so that arguement doesnt always apply either, anyway, I cant stand DS and nothing chages that....anyway, enjoy the show, thats what really matters.
Adamantium 07-30-2007, 05:16 PM I don't know how long "Bewitched" would have lasted if Dick Sargent had originated the role, instead of Dick York. I'm thinking it still would have been popular. However, for me, I wouldn't be a fan of the show because it was litterally Dick York that made me like the show. His passion for Samantha, his reactions to all the craziness, just Dick York in general.
I have every intention of purchasing seasons six through eight on DVD. And I'll be honest. The only thing I have against Dick Sargent is that he's not Dick York. And that's not to take anything away from him as an actor. It's just when I watch "Bewitched" I want to see Dick York as Darrin.

Here is what I meant by Samantha being nasty was the episode with Tabitha's second grade teacher. She was outright nasty to her in spite of the teacher barging in her house when Sam stated that she was busy. Plus her snooping around the backyard. Samantha should had stopped her at the door and leave it at that.
The episode when her and Darrin got into it when he accused her of using witchcraft in helping him. She nearly took his head off in that one.
The E True Hollywood Story stated that she was getting tired at the end. It did showed in season 8.
Larry Tate 07-30-2007, 09:54 PM I don't think she was being nasty at all, she was firm & she was just being protective of Tabitha & looking out for her & treating a nosy Busy Body as she deserved to be, who was interfering in her child's life in a way that could be very dangerous to her if her secret got out.
How could she stop her at the door & leave it at that if the teacher snuck into the back yard without permission to question Tabitha?, or when the teacher barged in, what was she supposed to do use Judo on her?
She was no different then she was towards Charlie Leach in season 2 in # 66 & 67 for example when he got too close to Tabatha.
The Developer in Samantha Fights city Hall & numerous other instances as well.
She was a lot nastier & tougher on Darrin on Dozens of occasions from
season 1 to 8, so the ex. you gave was nothing unique to season 8, recall the one in season one # 28 when they are locked inside their garage when the garage door was stuck, she made the season 8 example you cited look like a love in in comparison, or when they had the fight over his hounds tooth coat or the fight they had when he ended up changing a tire in the rain & ended up in that small suit that made him look absurd, i could go on & on.
The E True Hollywood Story never said she or anyone there at the time said she was getting tired at the end, that was just the ETHS's Producers comment, Liz is the definitive word on that & she said she was not tired at the end.
Plus they were referring to her getting tired in season 5 not 8.
We can agree to disagree but I think the opposite would be what accurately describes her in Season 8, she was very upbeat, happy & mischievous.
Larry Tate :)

I had seen Samantha go off on Darrin in previous seasons but in that episode in season 8 she look like she wanted to take his head off when he assumed that she used witchcraft. Yes, he was wrong for assuming that and not being thankful for a wife that will support her husband's career. She was just outright nasty about it. "If I'm stuck with the name I might as well enjoy the game." Come on. The old Samantha from the earlier seasons would had gone there like that. With that busy body teacher Samantha should had as she did I am busy and good day. Close the door and if she start snooping around the backyard, like she did, call the police and the school district.
Here's a source of what happened during those final seasons of Bewitched: http://www.harpiesbizarre.com/declineofbewitched.htm
It is good to have this discussion with you.
Larry Tate 08-03-2007, 03:58 PM I thought she was being rather staid & laid back towards Darrin compared
to the way she went after him in some of the previous episodes, earlier in the series.
In # 84 "I would rather Twitch then Fight" & in # 132 To Twitch or not to Twitch she was far tougher on Darrin then in
# 252 "A Good Turn never goes unpunished" where they never actually fight as she nips it in the Bud & Darrin leaves for Work instead, she was anything but Nasty in my View in that scene compared to the other examples i gave.
As for her & Darrin not talking & her going invisible, that was anything but nasty & no different then several other episodes where she & Darrin were estranged for a short while, such as #4 "It Shouldn't happen to a Dog" where she turned Jack Warden into a Dog & kicked Darrin out not once but Twice out of their Bedroom, even after he had apologized, as well as not talking to him for over a day.
She was not nasty towards that Snoopy Teacher, she was just being protective of her child & in no way other then she had been in prior seasons.
As for the link you provide, i have seen it before, it has no value in my mind & is the opinion only of the author of that particular article on that site.
Needless to say i think that person is mistaken in their views that are outlined in that article.
Larry Tate :)
Bonsai 08-04-2007, 10:15 AM In the 3 pages of discussion about this, one thing seems very clear: when you have been very used to someone in a particular role and really like them, it is jarring to see someone else step into it.
Dick Sargent had a very unenviable task replacing a well-established character. He knew it was inevitable that there would be immediate comparisons to Dick York and that he would be at a disadvantage simply because he was someone else. He also had to try to sell his own way of doing the part after DY's vivacious and animated portrayal. He said more than once that he knew it would be disasterous if he tried to mimic DY to any degree and had to play it more laid-back.
It's true that the Darrin-Samantha relationship changed. What so many people in this thread understatedly called "lack of chemistry" that "is a topic for another day" should be more plainly stated---Dick Sargent was gay. Ultimately, that's not an explanation, as many gay men have successfully acted the part of a heterosexual in love, but the combination of being gay, much more sedate, and dealing with the pressure of being the new boy is more than enough to downshift the chemistry by comparison. In addition, he suddenly was in a highly visible prestige series in the 1960's; where the possible disclosure of his sexual orientation would have been a problem before, it would now be total career-ending catastrophe.
It should be added that, in the original planning stages, they wanted DS for the role of Darrin, but he was not available. I believe that if he had been Darrin from the beginning that no one would have had any problems with his portrayal.
I, myself, prefer Dick York. I think he was the better Darrin----I'm just saying that the problems that went along with Darrin #2 were not Dick Sargent's fault and he needs to be cut some slack. I think I would have ended the series after DY left, but since EM clearly didn't want to do this, the understated approach they went with probably was the least disruptive in the long run.
Larry Tate 08-04-2007, 06:51 PM Very well stated, i agree with most of what you said in this Post Bonsai,
basically Ditto other then i would not have ended the series after season 5.
One thing i can add is that so many people seem to feel that they have to
hate the new one to prove their loyalty & affection for the old one when
two actors play a character.
Seems to me to be no point in doing so, as one should merely view the new actor based on the merit of his performance & the facts that they bear out rather then biases & prejudged views.
Screen Gems, Bill & Liz all offered DS the role when they went back to him for a second time after auditioning him the first time, but he had taken a contract with Universal by then & was no longer available.
This was confirmed by Bill Asher on camera in the Bewitched E! True Hollywood Story special as well as by several other Screen Gems Executives such as Harry Ackerman the Executive Producer.
So they opened it all up again & then for the first time thought of DY, brought him in & the rest was history.
Most likely they saw DY in a guest appearance of a show & that made them put him on their short list.
It was never a case of DS or DY beating the other out for the role as they were never considered for the role at the same time.

mstewart 08-04-2007, 07:48 PM Dick Sargent did a good job considering he was following a tough act. But the show was beginning to show its age by the sixth season and TV was changing when 1970 rolled around. The highlight of the sixth through the final season was the rising star of Erin Murphy. She was a natural child actress and entertaining to watch. It was good to see storylines featuring Tabitha. I loved the episode of Tabitha's Very Own Samantha. I loved the Christmas episode in 1970, which was Liz's favorite, Sister's At Heart. That was a true classic episode and cutting edge for Bewitched.
mstewart 08-09-2007, 09:41 PM I thought she was being rather staid & laid back towards Darrin compared
to the way she went after him in some of the previous episodes, earlier in the series.

If you saw the way Samantha glared at the teacher and if her eyes were razor blades that teacher would had been all over the floor. Yes, she was right in protecting her child but at the same time if it was real life she would had called the police and/or reported her to the school district just the idea of barging in uninvited.
In the episode of a Good Deed Never Goes Unpunished I saw a nasty side of her especially when she invisibly slapped his hand in bed and put him on the couch.
The show ran its course and could had gone down as a classic and I could not imagine what a 9th season would had been like.
This has been a good discussion.
